Forging a Drawknife The Complete Process
Over the last two weeks, I forged and finished this drawknife. I've wanted a drawknife for a long time, but didn't think I'd use it enough to justify buying one. But then I remembered that I'm a blacksmith, and I can just make one!

What kind of wood is that is it really hard? It looks just like the mystery wood I've been getting off pallets it kind of looks like Pine but it's way heavier
@@Oldmaninabasement It's yellow pine. It's still a softwood, but it's denser and heavier than white pine, which is what most 2x4s are made of. If you buy a 2x8 or 2x10, it's likely you're buying yellow pine.
@IronAgeKnifeCo. I'm getting it off of pallets it has no scent like Pine I've made a box out of it I know my saws hate it I made some cabinet drawer faces the surround with it just as hard as the oak oak ones I made I thought it was oak oak until I cleaned it up coming off of pallets I was invested at that point and had to use it on my shop cabinets
Nice work, tote looks good. Hope you saved the old one, you can scab in wood to repar the horn in the future....subbed!👍
Absolutely! Gotta save every piece of a tool this old
Nice, I just pu a "20 #29 Stanley transition plane for $10...mine is rusty, no japaning left...no cracks in the tote or body though. 👍🤠
I'd love to take it off your hands. Where can I buy?
Beautiful 😍 knife 😍 my friend
Hmm never seen a knife made that way before, pretty interesting honestly
Very nice....
Sick blade dude. Keep it up!
Great work dude 👏👏
A chisel looks very nice. Good job the only suggestion I would make would be to put a copper button in laid on the end of the wood handle. This way when striking it if need be it won’t damage or possibly chip or split the wood. Plus, I think it would look outstanding as well. Keep up the good work.
Già che ci sei prendi il martello dal ferro e batti con il manico.
The new one is nice. I love the length and simplicity of the handle more. Thanks for the video
I do some micro knives and I know how hard to bevel they are... double bevel...... you are the man bro lol
@@AP.Custom.Forgeworks Tiny bevels are a great way to get really frustrated really fast lol
Nice work and beautiful knife!
Thanks for this. I am going to make some paring knives from coils and was curious if it was thick enough for intregal bolsters. Nice start man can't wait to see it finished.
Very good information
Does the handle look too small?
Cool looking knife and a good video
Want me some of that Florida Orange Juice😄
lovelyyy
I think you're choking up a little too much on that handle of that hammer Give yourself a little bit more length and you won't have to work as hard You just have to get better at your aim.!!! 👍👍You definitely have more control when you choke up on the handle like that But you're working too hard let the hammer do the work for you Don't choke up so far on that handle.😇😇
Got me wanting to quit my job to do this
I'm not completely 100% sure, but having just restored a transitional plane it seems someone during the 138 years of your plane went ham with the black spraypaint. Dont think the chipbreaker and blade should be black. They should be bare metal. Also the leading edge of the levercap (the non figured part) should be bare metal. the mating surface on the frog should also be bare metal. What I have gathered that when setting the frog it should be set so the blade beds perfectly on the frog AND on the wood bed below. So using a thin ruler to set the frog in line with the wood bed. There is no 'closing the mouth' option by moving the frog forwards on these transitionals. That and some other minor things makes these 'inferiour' to the metal planes Stanley made. But they are really smooth and nice to use either way.
Loved how you dropped a history lesson on me😂 Can’t say I’m surprised though
Interessante!
Mr Angelo can you tell who I am I was your favorite student
This is that one I saw on iFunny, I've been enjoying going through your videos nice work
Beautiful!
👏👏👏
Yo, what up Mr. Angelo it’s your favorite student
Is this the new shop?
Nope, still the old shop. The new shop is still an acre of woods lol. I'll be posting something of me working out there soon tho
Very nice. What steel were used here?
80CRV2
its pretty averagely sized 😥
I always try to use the right wood
While there are no doubt tougher pieces of pine that would last a lot longer, you're right. Hickory, ash, or other traditional handle woods are traditional for good reason. Light + durable is what you need. I doubt even the toughest pine would come close to hickory for a heavy hammer!
New belt grinder looks good.
Obviously the shaky anvil doesn't seem to mess you up that much. I am sure it would be nice if it wasn't all over, but I bet you are so used to it it would mess with your method 😂
Poplar doesn't make good handles😂
