It will probably be fine to leave it unpainted, but you could paint the bottom 2 feet of siding and trim to better to protect them from the splashing water and mud. If the paint doesn't stick well, you would only have to wire brush the lower portion before you paint it all in the spring.

What a great experience for a father and son to be able to have with each other. I hope I can do the same with both of my sons one day.

I think you’re good. On the channel Lumnah Acres, the family lived in the house for at least a year without being able to paint the wood. The house & family seem fine

You can usually use wood stain at lower temperatures than paint. Another olden days trick would be to use wax or lanolin (from sheep’s wool) to weatherproof wood until the sun comes back.

Maybe Tyvek the outside before you leave for the winter? It will be a bit of expense but better than rot or weather damage when you get back in the spring/summer.

Use water sealer with a tint in it

You could do an oil base stain that’s very close to the same color. Seal and conceal. Does have dry time just soaks in.

It's not crazy. You two have done an awesome job on the Sabin. It will be great and in good shape when you guys return. As you said, if anything it will just be a quick fix when you all return. You two can be very proud of what you have accomplished. Love it.

Thanks for the shout out, after mine is weathered to the grayish color ill put a clear coat] on it, why not just tarp it around or tar/felt paper till spring

What about the gap between the bottom and top of front and back. .?

Hi Derek from lower MI👏 Here's a suggestion for keeping those protective boards from falling down: pile leaves in front of them. That way when the snow comes those leaves will be heavy enough to keep those boards in place. Or you could stack a layer of wood around the bottom to keep it secure. Also, have you considered 'capping' the stove pipe top to keep snow out during winter months? This will protect the stove from water freezing inside. Have a safe trip home and thanks for choosing MI for your getaway cabin❣️🥰

Crystal will get over being mad! If that does happen, you can always give it the burnt look! It will be fine as long as the roof is taken care of. Make sure it has insurance just in case a high wind or heavy snow happens.

A lot of our old shacks in Tasmania have always been painted with sump oil. Gives great protection.

Be grateful to have rain. In the Northeast we're having wildfires lasting for days.

I think i would leave it as is until spring then use a good log oil to protect the siding.

Derick i think is going to be fine without paint,just leave in the bottom all around wood that work like a "splash wall". The cabin looks really nice and you both did an amazing job. Crystal and Emily are waiting for you both. Have a safe trip back home. Blessings from Michigan ❤
