1:32 So, for those wondering A) wtf is Mark doing with a Geiger counter and B) is .78 microsieverts dangerous, let's start with B because that is easy: .78 mSv per hour is COMPLETELY safe and is equivalent to the normal exposure every being gets from being on Earth in general (0-50 mSv is considered normal background radiation exposure, and it's completely safe to be around, just wear sunscreen if it's the kind of radiation that impacts skin, such as UVA and UVB. The universe is radioactive by default, it just matters how much you're getting in addition to that.) That being said, Mark has a Geiger counter (question A) because he, or rather Amy, has an EXTREMELY RADIOACTIVE piece of glassware. Back before WW2 (where most of the beginning research on the damage from radiation was done, mainly due to the Los Alamos project) it was actually pretty normal to use Uranium as a mineral to strengthen glass. These glasses, known as "Canary glass," or "Vaseline glass" (why they named it Vaseline glass is beyond us) were also sold as plates and other glassware under a brand known as Fiestaware. Fiestaware, depending on the batch they were made in, are INCREDIBLY radioactive. The piece of Fiestaware Amy has, which she inherited from her grandmother, read at over 3500 mSv per hour using this same meter. 3,500 mSv is what the level was when Chernobyl and the nearby city of Pripyat were evacuated by the Soviet Union, for context. Now, the good news is that Fiestaware has the unique caveat of the fact that it IS glass; the uranium inside most Fiestaware is behind coatings that just happen to be very good at deflecting radiation, which means that most of what the meter is picking up is completely harmless even at that high level. However, as Fiestaware collectors will frequently warn, if these pieces are broken on accident, the break in the coating can cause radiation that's actually harmful to start to leak, and at the levels a lot of these pieces have, it's possible for a collector to immediately get radiation sickness if not dealt with quickly (between 2,000 and 3,000 mSv per hour, you can expect to begin vomiting or become unusually exhausted within 24-48 hours of exposure.) Apparently Mark wanted to prove that the Fiestaware mug they had was dangerous (😅 typical Mark-type shit, where he has to prove a point) and bought the counter to test it, and you can see his reaction during the video "I haven't eaten this in 20 years..." It was a hilarious video overall, but that part was also hilarious, including Mark answering "I think she might be irradiated 😅" when Amy asked what he thought of her grandmother. For anyone now worried if their Pyrex has uranium in it, it is now illegal to produce uranium glass, so you can rest easy. The Fiestaware that exists now is all that will ever exist, hence why some people collect them. -🪼
