How old is that unit when you took it apart? Rusty / tarnished spring. Loads of gunk in filter?! Listening to you, you share my awe in these things. In the pictures of cut aways w all the gears, etc! Amazing complexity all powered by water! And all that complexity for under $10!? Seems a bargain?? I’m holding a 15 year? old rain bird 5000 that looks new. Just doesn’t rotate. How did gunk get in yours? Water line or around seal from ground? Gonna try the wack it trick before taking it apart. Thanks for video!!

Interesting that they chose the ribbon cable like that, though. I was expecting the (potential) gaggle of wires from a generic dewalt connector as seen in the old USB adapters as they just had a bunch of solder loops on them. Neat disassembly!

The inductors got slazzed with goo. They're basically big coils around a ferrite core. The slazz does help a bit physically but I'd imagine it's to keep them from screaming if they are forced to work at a frequency that resonates into the audible spectrum (aka coil whine, or "eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee") TDK has an article titled "Measures Against Acoustic Noise in Power Inductors"; it doesn't talk about gooping but it does talk about how inductors form audible vibrations

Thanks, it was really helpful! Mine was dropped on the floor and the motor/wheel assembly was loose. Wheel assembly would pop out of place every time the robot would hit something. Turns out there was kind of a rubber pin with a big screw just under the pump keeping the assembly in place and it wasn’t in place anymore !

Storage trick... . get a good outlet timer. one that's digital so you have day settings. set it to go on for let's say 1-3 hrs on sunday . plug it in and your pack will be maintained but you won't cook your battery

that battery looks bent. It looks like it was a flat battery that was bent to fit the round body. That bothers me. I have the transparent one and so that's how I saw that it was bent.

I love this unit, but with 3 of my family having long hair those wheels are always getting clogged! I try to remove most with tweezers and a lighter. But even when the hair is removed, robot forgets how to go forward. So you have to push him for a bit, then he remembers.

Can anyone give me any insight as to why mine won't turn off? It seems to have a mind of its own. The air compressor also randomly came on but that was a singular occurrence thank goodness, because it really creeped me out. However no matter what I try to do to turn off the unit, the display will stay on, and if it turns off by itself it'll come back on after 5 minutes and flicker every 10 seconds until it turns off again. Idk what to do with it. It was a Christmas gift.

I have rainbird 5000s and tore one apart inspired by your video to see what the guts look like. Many of my 5000s had stopped rotating. I pulled them, cleaned filters, rigged them up to my garden hose with an adapter, turned the water on full and verified that they were still not rotating. Then in a flash of the tried and true, old school, mechanical fix of “just give it a good ol whack” inspired by your video with the water still full on, I whacked the head decently hard flat against a block wall hitting it both above and below the rotating head about ten times, and now they all rotate like new. Did this to nine non-rotating units, same procedure and same results. Was going to junk them all. One didnt work out but i pretty much new i had already stripped the gears by messing with it, oh well. Your block wall may be a large screw driver or whatever, but try giving them a whack with the water on and maybe be amazed.

Hey , this video helped me understand the function of the degree of rotation mechanism! I was able to slip the clutch back in place and adjust as before! I was told the head was broke… now it’s not! Thanks bro!

NiMH LSD can survive up to 2000 charge cycles, discharge 2.5% per year on average, can last 15 years on average, and have a maximum operating temperature of over 100°C (212°F). Li+ can only survive up to 1000 charge cycles, discharge 20% per year, only last about four years, and they tend to explode at 80-90°C (170-190°F). PbA can only really last 350 charge cycles, discharges completely in the matter of months, lasts two to three years IF CODDLED LIKE A DELICATE BABBY (less than 6 months otherwise), and quickly burns out above 45°C (113°F)
