Sorry my guy, there's just cheaper and more powerful cards. To echo some other comments: tooth and nail, thassa's oracle, craterhoof behemoth, isochron scepter/dramatic reversal would all be on the chopping block way before omniscience. Actually, I'd love to lose to omniscience...erm, assuming they close out the game quickly after playing it. But, welcome to MTG! To paraphrase Mark Rosewater: good games aren't just about happy feelings. The anger you felt losing to that is a part of the game and the art, and it made a memory that changed you as a player and a person.
I do find starting with commander really odd as its complex, but it seems common nowadays. Starting with a precon is definitely the way to go. After that, boosters are a really bad value way to build a deck but I can see your point as a new players that it's introducing you to new cards. I'd think there'd be enough inspiration online with youtube videos, Arena, decklists etc. but I haven't been a new player for a long time. Boosters are for limited, or for a dopamine rush. Personally I'd recommend just not buying expensive cards. The joy of commander is the card pool is massive and the format is casual, so just play a similar, cheaper card. But hey, your money, your choice.
Yeah, great points from you as well. I would imagine the good majority of new players do get introduced to Magic through Commander with it literally being the most popular format, but even I can't deny that there are better options format-wise. Commander is rarely played 1v1 after all, and there's something to be said about the mental bandwidth it demands. And as for the card pool, an unfortunate side effect of its sheer size is that some cards simply don't see nearly as much play as others, even if they're functionally similar. The way I see it, lack of options isn't the problem, it's favoritism of specific cards.
So one thing i'd note is that, as a new player, you dont have the card pool as those who've been present in MTG for longer, so the value of the cards in a booster pack tend to be a little higher, as you dont have as many cards similar, or the same as the ones you may pull. Because of this i'd say that Boosters are great early on, but only to a certain point, as chaff will hurt the longevity of that enjoyment. The amount of commons in a booster will make newer players more turned off the game. This is partially why i believe we have so many sets so frequently, they have to have new cards to retain the playerbase, otherwise the sales slow down. Singles are great after boosters, simply because it allows one to gauge the prices better. If you buy 80 dollars worth of boosters to try and get a card you want that only costs 20 dollars, you'll probably buy less sealed product in future if you dont get it, and stick with singles. I'd always recommend them, but its hard to tell someone they should spend 20 dollars on a card for a game they may not be as invested in as myself. The best example i can give is that, 15 dollars for a booster where i might not get what i want made me stop playing the game. But i've never once regretted spending 8 dollars on a single godzilla card.

Omniscience is powerful, but any card that costs 10 mana should be, and it definitely shouldn't be banned. It is a 10 mana card that isn't easy to cheat in, and while providing you a massive advantage, it requires a very good hand to win you the game on the spot. Besides counterspells, this can also be taken down with removal in response to them casting their first free spell. Omniscience is in most decks, a win more card. Where because you have significant card advantage (you've been drawing extra cards frequently) you will quite likely win. Though it is more attributable to the amount of cards you have access to rather than omniscience, the player drawing the most cards is always the most likely to win. tldr: It's not consistent enough to be built around as a win condition due to its prohibitive mana cost, difficulty to cheat in, and dependency on the other cards you already have in hand to win the game.
Meh, this is fine. Thassa's Oracle seems more like a problem.
Omniscience is about to be legal in standard for the next 5 years. If the printing of Foundations continues during that period, there's gonna be a lot more people with access to it.

When I cast Omniscience and do not immediately win my buddy gives me mad grief for playing such a powerful card and not ending the game. Dude, its an ENABLER, not a finisher. He got his grief back in spades the time HE cast Omniscience and did not immediately win. 😀
I'll try to explain why Tolarian Academy will never be unbanned in Commander (and by extension: Legacy, and never Unrestricted in Vintage). In Magic, there are three resources: Life, Cards, and Mana. Life is the most common way you win the game, you reduce all opponents life to 0, you win the game. There are also things in the game that ask you to pay life but can usually "warp" the game, like Ancient Tomb providing two colorless, Mana Confluence and City of Brass tapping for any color you need for 1 life, among other things. I will lump Cards and Mana for the purpose of this comment. You are only generally allowed to draw one card at the start of your turn (if you're not the starting player in a 1v1 format, and of course draw spells aside) and you're only generally allowed to play 1 land a turn (of course, ramp and cards that allow you to play multiple lands a turn aside as well). This is why cards like Ancestral Recall is good, because for 1 blue mana, you get to draw 3 cards, which is very similar to taking 3 extra turns, sure you don't get to develop your board state in terms of playing lands and spells, but you still got to draw cards. In Magic, statistically speaking, the person who draws more, wins more because you draw more spells that help win you the game. Also, this is why Tolarian Academy is good. There are way more artifacts cards that cost 0 or 1, which can easily make Tolarian Academy tap for more than 1 mana, and this can lead to very explosive turns especially in decks such as Urza Lord High Artificer, a deck that runs ~30 artifacts. Note here that these 0-1 cost artifacts are artifacts that can actively produce mana or advance the plan of the deck, not just for Urza LHA , but also for high powered/CEDH decks. Creating such a stark imbalance when it comes to mana resources can be very oppressive and unfair. It also is generally harder to deal with artifacts especially on a higher level, this makes Tolarian Academy much more resilient than Gaea's Cradle. Unbanning Ancestral Recall and Tolarian Academy will just make blue a whole lot more powerful and Blue +x decks. The average 2-4 color deck with blue in it runs 15 artifacts. You don't need Tolarian Academy to make you 15 mana, you only need to have more than 2 artifacts in play in order to have an advantage. Cuz you're tapping a land for 2 blue with no downside.

Yawgmoth's bargain was made to be a fixed necropotence that was actually far worse in terms of brokenness
dude tinker is crazy, there is a lot of unexpensive artifacts out there, especially in dedicated decks, that can be easily sacrificed to cheat out game winning cards very early into the game since it's so cheap. there is no way it's fine to be free
"nothing's stopping you from cheating an expensive artifact into play, but in order to cast it you need to sacrifice an artifact" I'm sure that is what the designers at the time though, but it turns out that that's a very small cost, especially as we have gotten many more expensive artifacts. There is a reason it's banned in every format other than Vintage, where it's restricted.
I run it in my deck but it rarley lasts 1 pass around table and i only play it for a one turn explosion for the win but usually if i cant win i can win next turn but even so it never lasts more then 2 rotations

@@magickfinngers Looking back it was a knee-jerk reaction to "tinker is a fair and balanced card." It appears like you did read the card. I still disagree that tinker and fabricate are the same card. I know they both get expensive artifacts out of your library, but you are saying it is fine that you get to skip paying 8-12 mana because you had to sacrifice something.

In order to understand exactly how powerful Ancestral Recall is, it might help to look at what other blue cantrips see play, both in Commander and in other formats. Brainstorm and Ponder, are both so much worse that you can't compare them at all, yet both see extensive play in Legacy and are even powerful enough to be restricted in Vintage (Ponder was only recently unrestricted). Treasure Cruise is an incredibly powerful card that is banned in Modern and Legacy while also being restricted in Vintage and that's the same thing with a massive 7 card delve cost added as well as being a sorcery. Lorien Revealed costs 5 to draw 3 cards and yet sees plenty of play in each format it's legal in. Yes it has island cycling, but if you draw 3 cards, you are pretty likely to hit a land anyways as well as 2 other cards. Thoughtcast has seen plenty of play in the past because with enough work put in it can be a 1 mana draw 2. I can confidently say most players would agree it is the second strongest card ever printed (excluding ante) and is only a little bit behind Black Lotus. I think one big difference Rofellos has over other ramp cards is it's consistency when in the command zone. It almost guarantees 6 total mana on turn 3 with no other work, but it also scales up later on and can produce upwards of 10 mana on it's own later on. There's very few cards that can match the amount it produces for a cost of only 2 and most of the ones that can make that much can't be recast once they die and/or require a lot more work in order to function. Many mana rocks are colorless (really almost all the ones that aren't signets or talismans). Academy can also be played in more than just a mono colored decks. I would also point out that you don't need to tap it for 20 in order for it to be busted. Tap it for 2 and it's already stronger than Ancient Tomb. Tap it for 3 and it's stronger than Mishra's workshop. Any self respecting artifact deck will be tapping it for much more. While there is only one creature land (Dryad Arbor) to work with Gaea's Cradle, there are 19 Commander legal artifact lands. Library does require you to have it turn 1 for it to be good, but when you do it can draw you like half a dozen cards before you stop being able to use it. It is very strong, but could still maybe be okay if it wasn't over $1000... Still, always interesting to see the takes off someone just getting into the game.
"Why not this, while this other thing is legal?" is not a argument, because commander bans are signposts. Having a tutor AND mana cheating in to the same card, is not the same as having one or the other. And even if it was, it's just a shows what broken cards are not align with the format, not to unban that one.

@@magickfinngersThe big way to remember it is that activated abilities are "cost: effect", triggers use "when", "whenever", or "at" and anything else is generally static.
My opinions on this, purely from a power level perspective and ignoring availability of cards: Ancesteral Recall is in my opinion in the top 3 best cards in the game, if not the best card outright. To the point that in Legacy, the most powerful format where nearly everything is legal, it is often tutored for since getting 3 more cards can win games. It is a different format though, since card advantage is very important, and every card is individually stronger than in commander. I do still think that Ancestral is stronger than most fast mana regardless, especially since there are a lot of cards that can approach the efficiency of moxxen, since rituals and mana rocks can fufill both of their uses respectively. Yet Ancestral has no competitors that get close in general efficiency. Rofellos sounds fine to unban, makes sense. Tinker is very, very strong, especially since mana rocks are very common, and there are 6-12 cost artifacts that near instantly win the game. It is not unreasonable to be able to tinker turn 2-3 for something that can easily snowball into a win. While powerful, assuming we are unbanning for power, and not the likes of sway the stars, something needs to be unbanned. Tolarian Acedemy though. When it comes to artifacts, they are basically free if you build your deck around them. A lot of your lands can be artifacts, and if you include a lot of 0 and 1 mana artifacts, Tolarian Academy can quite easily mana silly amounts of mana. It is probably on the strong side. Library of Alexandria is strong, I might have never seen it in action, however it sure is powerful. Imagine playing it turn 1, then, every turn, draw for your turn, draw for alexandria, and play a land and a card. You essentially get to draw a card every turn at the cost of a land drop. While that is silly good, I do think that the cost of it being hard to use later, when you draw it with a 4- card hand, and the fact that your are sacrificing a mana and color producer to do so makes it less powerful. I would think that Recall and Tinker go in every deck, yet library has some limits that might make it hard to use, and is probably fine to unban.
*Vintage is the one where recall is legal, not Legacy. That being said, it's also worth noting that the similar cards that are legal in Legacy (Brainstorm, Ponder, Lórien Revealed) see tons of play despite being orders of magnitude weaker.
Played normally I'm not even sure if it's a good card, it's ten mana and not a threat in and of itself. You might be able to cheat it into play, show and tell esq, but unless it's with your commander it's likely not consistent enough to ban.
Eh... If you're casting Omni for 10 mana you kinda deserve to win the game if it resplves. Expensive cards should win the game, because the game does need to end eventually.

Omniscience is definitely powerful, even for 10 mana. It's one of those cards that the "run more removal" advice people are probably thinking of all the time. But then, is it any more powerful than Craterhoof Behemoth? A green creature that usually ends the game the turn it's played, while costing 2 mana less than Omniscience? There are plenty of powerful cards that can guarantee victory most of them time they are played, and Omniscience probably isn't the worst, even if it feels like it. It probably won't be banned, but now that WOTC is working on a tier system for commander, it will probably be put in tier 4, and you will be able to aviod it by playing in lower tiers

I'm going to offer that if you misread Yawgmoth's Bargain THAT dramatically then it's possible you don't fully comprehend any of these cards. Tinker and Academy are SO much worth than bargain. With Tinker you can turn ONE blightsteel. Or turn one One Ring. Or any of the INSANE artifacts in MTG. turn one God Pharaoah's Statue or other tax effects kills the game. Darksteel Forge. Cityscape Leveller. Akroma's Memorial. Portal To Phyrexia. Whatever you need... turn one. Academy is just an even more broken Gaea's Cradle. Every artifact land, treasure (or everything you have if you tutored mycosynth lattice) giving you a blue? I'd unban the others though. Recall is nuts, but it's also SO expensive I don't think you'd see it often.

@@seandun7083 Of course it isn't. It's not difference than me saying there's only one copy of a card out there, so it isn't an issue. Bans have always been justified by how common cards are in decks. We're currently seeing that the one ring is in 50% of all modern decks where it's a 4 of. That's more likely to see a ban than a card that's in one deck. Recall is strong, VERY strong, but it's three cards... in a format where it's just one of 99 cards, and there are many ways to draw multiple cards. This video literally talks about necropotence. Recall breaks a 60 card format where you're running 4 of them and have tons of ways to get to it. You want to run it in a commander game with me? Go for it. Can't wait to see it.
@@LeviClay in vintage you can only run one of them. It's still broken in half. In cube it's generally agreed to be a higher pick than Black Lotus. In other unofficial formats that are Singleton where it is legal, like Canadian Highlander, it's still broken and it's seen as stronger than cards like Time Walk, Time Vault, Black Lotus, or Flash. The card is not okay. There is a big difference between not seeing play because of it's price versus not seeing play because it's not strong. That's especially true because price doesn't always matter. While a Unlimited Ancestral Recall is a few thousand dollars, you can get a Vintage Masters one on Magic Online for about $4 and you can proxy one for free.
Putting it into play stops it being in the same category as those other tutors. Look through expensive artifacts and see is they seem reasonable at 3 mana. That is the argument you have to make. Bolas's Citadel seems the go to in vintage currently.
Tinker is a better natural order for artifacts in blue. If we think the RC wanted to slow down the rhythm of the games, I really doubt this would happen. The same argument for Tolarian Academy. Actually, I don't believe blue need more resources in artifacts decks or draw. Rofellos would be nice and Library too. I think Coalition Victory should be in your list.
Coalition Victory would admittedly have been a better choice than at least two cards I mentioned.
Many of the banned cards might not seem so bad at first glance (cards like Fastbond) but they are extremely powerful in the right decks. It's interesting and fun seeing someone's opinion on them that has just started into the game. And I don't mean that in a condescending way either, it's just nice to see people come across them for the first time :)

No. Tinker can get ultra broken artifacts IN TO PLAY at the cost of an artifact land or cheap/free artifact. Library of Alexandria is too expensive as is ancestral recall. Rofellos was already tried and the fact it essentially doubles your mana from the command zone makes it hard to interact with. Tolarian academy interacts with artifacts too well.
I have the feeling this is the major downside with people starting with commander as their first contact with magic. It wraps their perspective on the game. There is so much going on in the game, especially commander that it is hard for new players to grasp the basics of card advantage, tempo and threat assesment. Adding onto the general consensus of commander that people should not "play to win" makes it even harder to have a real idea of the fundementals of the game. I genuine feel it is better to start with a 1 v 1 60 card format than with commander. Nothing against you personally as a content creator but I have to ask if it wise for you to broadcast your takes after just a few month of gameplay. Since new players and less enfranchised players will identify themselves with you and might form their oppinion through you. I am not telling you to stop creating content and wish you luck but you might want to think about the topics you talk about and try doing some research before posting it.
Wow, I guess someone is just too young or hasn´t been playing long enough to have been in Combosummer (Urza block constructed) or I guess hasn´t ever seen a game of Vintage. Ancestral ? Library of Alexandria ? Tolarian Academy? You can have your opinion but seriously, Ancestral Recall is so much card advantage for 1 blue pip it´s not even funny. People actively search for Ancestral Recall in Vintage with tutors because it is so efficient. Library of Alexandria is like the dream card for any control deck. I am really not sure if you are genuine with your takes or just want generate clicks.
I am sorry if I sounded a little codsecending. I don´t want to sound like I am gatekeeping or anything. I am sure that with more time in the game, you will find out that card advantage is the key to success in this game. Every card you draw / see more than your opponents means one option more for you to have to either react or deploy a threat onto the board.
So t1, Island, sol Ring. T2 Tinker (sac the sol Ring) into blightsteel colossus. Seems balanced. And thats just one possibility. Portal to phyrexia is a thing, and there are so many powerfull artifacts, and the fact that they come direct into play is what makes the difference to any other Tutor. And since you can sac a food/clue/treasure or any other artifact, the sac isn't a drawback at all.

Sure, just drawing 3 cards may not seem impactful but it's something every deck wants to do nevertheless and drawing 3 cards at instant speed for 1 mana is way above other draw spells. Ancestral Recall would be played in all blue decks for how extremely efficient it is, if it wasn't 500-1000 dollars, which is honestly even worse than if everyone could just run it for a few cents.

I mean man… if you’ve only been playing a few months I might take a step back from criticizing rules and ban lists that are probably there for reasons you don’t quite have the knowledge of yet. Instead focus on your strong suites make videos from the perspective of a new player, showing off cool things you’re finding or asking and answering questions you have since as a new player you know what questions you and probably some other new players mist want answers to…

Library of Alexandria being in your opening hand means you get a free extra card on turn one, right? You would have eight in hand, but it would be a non-issue if you have a t1 play or are playing a deck that wants to put things in the bin. Seems strong.
You realize that bargain isn’t an upkeep trigger, right? It’s an activated ability. In other words, it’s not phyrexian arena, it’s necropotence, but at instant speed….. which, even at 6, is pretty much “I win.” That being said, sure unban it.
