This is my music channel that has a heavy emphasis on baritone guitars but will feature my bass playing as well as other instruments that I happen to play. You'll also find music here from my original instrumental music project, Clean Lines. (Clean Lines also happens to be previous name of this channel.)
Gretsch Baritone played like a BASS ("I Don't Even Know Your Name" Cover by Dan Lepien)
Following up on my last video that showcased my Bass VI-tuned Gretsch Baritone with me playing it more in a baritone guitar style through a guitar amp. This video is will counter that by playing it like a bass, finger-style, and through a bass amp. I even do a bass solo at 3:29.
The music is by Dan Lepien Band and is a cover of Alan Jackson's "I Don't Even Know Your Name"

Using the Gretsch G5260 as a BASS VI ("Badger Road" by Dan Lepien)

I play bass for a the great Wisconsin country singer, Dan Lepien. I use the Gretsch Baritone G5260 as my weapon of choice. I keep it tuned as a Bass VI and play it like a bass most of the time, but on some songs (like this one) I play it like baritone guitar and do some soloing (I pre-record the bass part and put them in the backing track for these situations). The song in this video is an orig...

I turned my baritone guitar into a bass VI.
How's the neck dive?
@@fsolisiii Lol! It's really bad! I constantly have to hold the neck up. Worth dealing with though.
that's gotta be hard to fingerstyle with the spacing...I have that Gretsch and a Bass VI and dig their bass tone with guitar playability-but with a pick, like when I play a bass.
I'll admit that it was difficult at first but I persisted because I knew if I could nail this technique on a VI, the instrument would be of greater value to me. The trick was to not try to have your finger directly in front of the string. It's better to have it rest on top and strike at an angle. It makes the narrow spacing less of an issue and still produces the same results sonically.
@@MattTheBassPlayer how long did it take you to get used to that play style?
@@ashgonza92 I think it probably took me about 2-3 months to really nail it and get comfortable with it. It was well worth the effort.
Fluid playintg. You have quite a range as well. Fantastic demo video.
If you don't mind saying, what strings are you using and did you have to file the nut?
@@MikalkHill The Ernie Ball set 20-90. I surprisingly didn't have to file the nut. The strings fit perfectly.
@MattTheBassPlayer thanks!
@MattTheBassPlayer I bought mine for this purpose also but have hesitated to restring it yet.
@@MikalkHillI bought mine with the intention of tuning it like a Bass VI as well.
Put the labella flats for the bass vi. I did it to my gretsch g5566 double neck and never looked back. Some dearmond dynasonic copies in the bass fit and they sound the part.
Could you give specifics as to how you achieve the Bass VI sound ? What effects did you use ? Sounds perfect.
I'm running it through the Line 6 Helix Native plugin. The chain of effects are: 10-band eq, LA Studio Comp, Tube Screamer, Elephant Man (Memory Man) Delay, Jazz Rivet 120 (Roland JC 120) Amp, Analog Flanger, Chorus, Plate Reverb, and Analog Delay w/Mod. Of course not all of those are on all the time throughout the video but it is some combination of those and they are laid out in that order. Another important element to achieving the Cure Bass VI sound is to only use the neck pickup.
@MattTheBassPlayer thanks so much ! Yeah, I already got the neck pickup tip. I suppose that Gretsch bariitone has a sweeter sound than my Squier Vintage Modified VI
@@pocojoyo I have a Squier Classic Vibe VI but I had it tuned to low B at the time I recorded of this video, so I opted to use the Gretsch. I was pleasantly surprised at how well it matched the original sound though.
Can you do an Acoustic Version w/ your Acoustic Bass VI? I love the sound of an Acoustic Bass.
I love that you could throw in modern country and 80s New Wave. Kudos!
@@lambrusco1970 Thanks! I've always had an eclectic taste in music.
Matt The Bass Player I made myself an Acoustic Bass VI for under $15 by restringing a Fender ESC-105 Classical Guitar w/ Magma GCT-E Octave Down Tuning Strings. The resulting instrument was a really good sounding Acoustic Bass VI that had a warm Acoustic Bass tone because those strings are Nylon wrapped in Metal.
Fender 24-100 Gauge strings are a good match
It's an Octave below a Normal 7 String Guitar. It's punchy.
I love its twang & Fender 24-100 gauge strings sound great on it.
I don't believe I've ever put Fender strings on my Dano. I have put them on my Squier and Acoustic though. I'm 99% sure that the strings in this video are from Stringjoy.
@@MattTheBassPlayer Try the Fender 24-100 Gauge strings next, they would provide a nice balanced sound
@@RockStarOscarStern634 I actually tune my Dano up to A now so the Fender strings would be too tight for that.
@@MattTheBassPlayer But if you want to tune the Dano back to E, use Fender 24-100 Gauge Strings for that next.
It's an Acoustic Bass VI. Hey can you do an Acoustic version of "Does it Bass VI?"
That's an interesting idea that I hadn't considered. If I can think of enough songs with acoustic guitar parts that could translate well to the VI (i.e. parts that aren't just strumming full open chords), I'll make a video of it.
@@MattTheBassPlayer That would ROCK
@@MattTheBassPlayer You can do an Acoustic Version of "Does it Bass VI" just by playing the same songs from the "Does it Bass VI" video but on the Acoustic Bass VI for a new twist.
@@RockStarOscarStern634 I could. The intros from the 2 videos I did make actually would've been perfect for the Acoustic VI. I'd prefer to do something new though, but I may include those two songs if I feel like I need more songs.
@@MattTheBassPlayer Why not do Acoustic Versions of it called "Does it Bass VI (Goes Acoustic)". Karl Golden did 100 Rock Riffs Goes Acoustic so lets try "Does it Bass VI goes Acoustic".
Great job! I just bought the Gretsch G5260T and I'll be learning the part from this video :) Our singer likes it in A, so I guess I get to play it without the capo!
@@MinsanSauers I have that same Gretsch! Awesome guitar! I used to keep it in A but now I keep it in Bass VI tuning. It works great in both tunings. I'm glad my video is helping you learn the song. I should note that I did take some liberties with it because the baritone does get buried in parts of the song but it all works.
@MattTheBassPlayer I'm loving it so far! What you played sounds great so I have no qualms copying it :)
Is your Bass IV tuned standard (EADGBE) or baritone?
@@cinderbinx Bass VI tuning. That's how the lead guitar player on this song was tuned. I put in 'Baritone Guitar Covers' because it's effectively playing the role of a baritone guitar despite being tuned in the bass range.
what are the pedals? out of curiosity
@@sic.thing.y I set up some of the footswitches on my Helix to play bass tones to accompany my lead part.
The first song will still get you kicked out of Guitar Center! 😂 Great bass VI conceptual demo, I’ve been on the fence about buying one and this demo helps with my decision.
Pretty neat. Low E sounds a little woofy? Otherwise seems great. Bass VI sound is right up my alley, and it’s more interesting to me to modify an existing instrument. More importantly, you hooked me in with that nice little opening (and closing) riff - yours, or?
Thanks! I do agree with you on the low E. I've been using a thicker gauge ever since this video (90 or higher) and it sounds much better. And thanks for the compliment on my riff. It is an original and my most recent video expands upon it: th-cam.com/video/D6vqrJc_ZR0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=djPfPxwE3sbzQJ3w
@@MattTheBassPlayer Just checked - really dig it! Almost like deconstructed Midwest emo (in a good way), gorgeous tone too.
@@janacopolis Thanks! Back in my high school and college days, midwest emo was practically all I listened to (long before I knew it was called that). It still resonates with me and it will often show in the music I write.
Fantastic album by the cure
Hell yea sounds good bud
Awesome! Instant sub.
Thanks!
That sounds amazing. The captain really outdid himself on this. Congrats!
The thump of the lower strings is fantastic! I'd love to hear just the acoustic side of this instrument. I got a feeling that the electronics are messing it up a lot.
Thanks! It does sound better than I expected acoustically. It doesn't have a large enough body to provide adequate low-end but I knew that would be the case going in. There is a demo video of it where the builder shows how it sounds acoustically: th-cam.com/video/k_LceELtrEc/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Fs6jZf63pwPkXbhO I may make one of my own, but I don't yet have a high enough quality mic to do it justice.
@@MattTheBassPlayer I wouldn't say his demo is also doing any justice ;) I'll hang out around here in case You'll come with Your own. Keep thumping :)
Heaven paradise utopia! Let me guess: +/- $7,000?
Thankfully it was NOT that expensive!
@@MattTheBassPlayer OK good that was a hyperbole, but you know this is a dream item, right? If there is any other full-fledged Bass VI in classic Western steel-string configuration, I am unaware of it. And your playing style is almost *exactly* what I want to learn how to do, but I am too much of a klutz to pull it off. (it never occurred to me to use a thumb pick). Anyway I think the Allmightly Algorithm finally worked and showed me a bass demo I actually want to see!
@@ShiceSquad Thanks! I had to figure out this technique on my own but it didn't take that long to get the hang of it. I'm surprised I don't see more VI players playing it this way.
Love it
Holy shit!!! Come back to the Bass VI subreddit and post this please
Will do!
This is so insanely cool! The response of every string seems so tight and focused. Awesome composition too man!
Thank you! Glad you liked my composition and the sound!
Great video! Bass VI sounds much better to me.
Not only was the demonstration guide. It was also good that you took a moment to note how you thought of using this model to fill the shoes of a different bass that you play but that you were inclining toward playing it more like a guitar. Most people just play it like a guitar instead of even thinking of playing it like a bass.
Thanks for noticing that. In the 3 years that have passed since I made this video, my journey with the Bass VI has evolved immensely. I found myself itching to use it at gigs, but because I'm always hired as a bass player, I've been having to use it as a bass. But I still wanted to show off its baritone guitar qualities so I found work arounds like incorporating foot pedals to play bass notes while I play guitar leads, pre-recording my bass line into the live tracks (if the band uses tracks), and utilizing a hybrid technique and setup so I can play bass and guitar at the same time. I've been using the Bass VI far more than I ever imagined I would when I first bought it. I feel like it lets me do things that I wish my 4-string would let me do.

I was about to attempt that. I`m curious what gage are you using on the guitar set?
Bad ass
Fire your singer right now
Haha! I don't think I'll be doing that, but thanks for watching and commenting.
this is dope! great technique. very innovative
Thanks! I'm really proud that it's producing the results that I was going for.
Cool cover and sound.
Can you tune a baritone to E standard without changing to VI strings?
Technically yes, but it will be very floppy and probably won't sound very good. If you use heavy gauge baritone strings, it might be passable, but Bass VI strings are so affordable and easy to order that I would just recommend using those.
@@MattTheBassPlayer Cool, thank you!
I play it on a baritone tuned to A
I saw a somewhat recent video of Clint Black in a studio session with his original band and they played this song. The guitarist played a Danelectro baritone tuned to A. He had to modify the lick slightly since he no longer had access to that low G. I prefer the original version better but it was still cool.
Oh snap so the OG is done on a BassVI?@@MattTheBassPlayer
@@AnthonyBurrito1313 Technically it was played on a Danelectro Longhorn 6-string bass, but that is essentially the equivalent to a Bass VI. You can see him playing it on the original music video for the song.
@@MattTheBassPlayer Thanks!!!🙏
Learned the tune for a gig next week and I see what you are saying about the low G!! I am having a ball learning these cool country licks@@MattTheBassPlayer

It is.
Excellent, great breakdown with your most excellent add ins. Thank you.
Thank you for the kind words. This is definitely a favorite of mine to play.
Fantastic music, so glad you found a good use for the drums!🙂
What tuning are you using like to know
B standard.
Thanks for the in fo
Finally. Someone playing it right!!!
Thanks! Yeah, I've seen other videos of playing people playing it completely wrong too.
A lot of work, well done!
This is awesome!
Some of these sounded really good, but there was definitely a bit of muddiness in some where the two basses were duking it out in the same low range. I guess traditionally the bass vi was used to double the (acoustic) bass part, and in that case it would sound clean. Two different low bass parts usually sound not great, in my opinion, unless planned out pretty carefully.
Yeah, there were definitely parts where Bass VI was clashing with the regular bass part. I still left it in because I wanted the viewer to weigh in on what worked and what didn't.
I wish I could say I love the bass 6, cause it definitely has a very unique and interesting sound, but my goodness do those things fight you every step of the way. Never felt comfortable to me to use in a bass guitar setting, so I restrung it as a baritone guitar and have been having a much better time with it
Me too! I tune mine C Standard instead of B. I play with a full orchestra....woodwinds and horns. Our most common key signatures are F, B flat, E flat, and C, so it makes playing rhythm decidedly simpler. Also, on a 30" scale, that low E sounds a bit "flubby". Just like a Baritone Guitar tuned up a half step. Hell, my standard guitars pretty much collect dust now! Happy playing, friend.
B0 means you turned the Bass VI tuning to a 6 string bass tuning? If so, what string brand/model did you use?
I believe I was using a custom set from LaBella in this video. I don't think they let you buy individual strings anymore but I used a 120 for the low B. Now I use a .124 from Kalium. They're the only company I'm aware of now that sells guitar strings thicker than 100.
@@MattTheBassPlayer 120 low B for a short scale bass?
@@vassili87 Yes. On a VI, you generally go with lower tension than you would on a standard bass. It's not required but I like it because I will play it like a baritone as well and the low tension helps with the tone.
@@MattTheBassPlayer I mean, I didn't even know those existed.
@@vassili87 Oh! Yeah, they are rare.
What's the scale length and tuning of the baritone here?
30". EADGBE down an octave.
I love the utlra vibey western feel of the baritone with some light tremolo. Well done!
Thanks! I was definitely going for a western vibe.
Excellent
Outstanding motivation and great nuanced playing.
