Whistle Pig // Snowshoe, WV
Riding Upper and Lower Whistle Pig at Snowshoe Bike Park closing weekend 2024. A slower trail, but still a blast - would kill to have access to a flowy trail like this at my local.

      @@TheKeeperofdeath so you can access this via Frick, but it isn’t technically at frick park. If you want to ride there from Frick, you need to head towards crater/humpular and then ride down a couple of streets, but you’re better off just parking at Les Getz park. All of this stuff is back in the woods there. If you go into the park and head towards the back of the grounds you’ll find where the trail systems start.

      It’s not ideal, but you could certainly try haha. I haven’t been there for a while, but there are far bumpier trails out there from what I remember. It looks like you’ve got disc brakes, so that’s good. I guess I’d be mostly worried about the beating your fork will take. A bike like that is definitely not intended for any intense MTB.

      @@dinglemccringleton honestly I’d check out the used market. I’ve seen a lot of good deals on high-end bikes lately, not that you need something crazy to ride the stuff around here. Safety is one aspect, but components built to take the beating of actual mountain biking is another. I’d try to get something with a rockshox or fox brand fork on it if you can. The big bikes cost some money, but so does replacing broken parts, haha. I think a lot of bikes you see in big box stores are more built for rail trail and casual riding than actual mountain biking.

      @griffithmike 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Right on! When I first got into MTB I was terrified to go over the bars, I think it was my first time out that I had a pretty bad one. It’s good to know screwing up and hitting the ground isn’t so bad and you’ve just gotta get back up and brush it off. At the end of the day it’s all about getting out and having fun, gotta start somewhere!

      @@griffithmike Is the trail itself closed? Or just the lift? Because I'd honestly be willing to do some kind of two-car thing to be able to hit this trail

    • @griffithmike
      @griffithmike ปีที่แล้ว

      Nah the trials themselves have been regularly maintained and improved by the main guy and others the whole time to my knowledge, but I’ll drive down to Snowshoe before I pedal to the top of that mountain haha. I know guys had talked about shuttling before, I haven’t done it myself. I don’t know the area super well, but it seems like that might actually take a decent amount of time to do so depending on the route you need to take to the top. On the upside, last I checked, the might have the lift up and running by some time in Nov, but the weather is definitely going downhill quickly.

    I've been wanting a good downhill mtb trail with some kind of lift that takes you up hill. This isn't a bad drive for me, I'll definitely be going there. But I looked it up and it's saying it's temporarily closed. It's hard to find solid information on this, do you know anything about that?

    • @griffithmike
      @griffithmike ปีที่แล้ว

      So they shut the incline down in ‘21 to do maintenance, which was supposed to take two years. Last I checked, a machined part was a bit delayed, so it probably won’t be open until late this year (they’ve gotta pass a bunch of safety tests and stuff after the install). Sucks, but I’d definitely recommend the trip next year. Not sure where you’re at, but snowshoe in WV is definitely worth the trip for good downhill with lift access, it’s about 3.5-4 hours for me. You can get a day pass for $50ish and you’re able to get a place with a full kitchen at the bottom of the mountain (the Inn) for $90/day, hotel style rooms are even cheaper. There are also rumors that 7 springs is opening their bike park back up for next season, so fingers crossed there.

      @griffithmike ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah no problem! It’s a blast. Btw I think you might’ve deleted the other comment as I was replying, but just to give you the info.. I’ve always booked the “economy one bedroom” suites at “the inn at snowshoe”.. they actually have two bedrooms, a living room, and a kitchen.. and they’re only $90. But I’m not seeing them on the site, I’m wondering if they’re renovating and got rid of them? Might be worth giving them a call if you’re into doing it on a budget. Just FYI that place is a few miles away at the base of the mountain. All other lodging is at the top around the resort. I just have never been able to justify 3x+ the price when I can get a full condo setup for that cheap. I haven’t made the trip yet this year, I’m definitely gonna have to look around for cheap lodging elsewhere if those rooms are gone.

      Christopher Yutzey got it on Marcus’ GoPro. You’ll have to come out sometime, they have the dam releases every other weekend. Had no idea what we were doing in the beginning, but figured it out pretty quickly. The raft makes big stuff seem small, but if you get sideways in the wrong place or fall off into a hole you could easily be having a bad time pretty quickly haha

    does this resort have a terrain park? I love the wide open nature of the runs. It looks like a giant bowl similar to Vail's numerous bowls. How is the snow there, wet or dry?

    • @griffithmike
      @griffithmike 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tommy T when I was there, they had a medium sized terrain park set up towards the bottom of the tram. The couple of times that it dumped during my visit the snow was a little on the wetter side (not too bad though), but I can't really speak for what they typically get. Had a blast there. Would 100% recommend.
