Excellent book. I found it in the library and bought it immediately.
24:54 "Common Emitter Follower" no such thing. That is a Common Emitter.
I enjoyed this video on calculators! Definite thumbs up! I also tend to be a calculator nerd. :) Your two high-end calculators often can't be used on standard tests, including the F.E. (that was called E.I.T when i was in college) because they can solve some equations/formulas/functions that would make passing the tests too easy without really knowing how to solve the problems yourself. However, the Casio fx-CG50 can be set into a "test mode" which is accepted in F.E. tests. I assume that you must set it in the test mode before entering the test location and show it to the Proctors -- it will have a color bar flashing on the screen that proves that it is in test mode. Other TH-cam channels have Playlists of tutorials on both of your higher-end calculators. A (too) quick showed Playlists of ~8-9 tutorial videos on the TI Nspire and >40 tutorial videos on the Casio fx-CG50. Surely there is a longer Playlist for the TI too. (I found a tutorial for my TI-89 Titanium that was nearly 100 videos!) TI's CAS (Computer Algebra System) is (or was originally(?)) intended to show that you don't have to learn RPN as used in the HP calculators back when they were the two top calculator manufacturers. I _think_.... I saw a video or web page a few years ago that explained why the TI calculators tend to cost more than many other calculators. TI has embedded into "education" at virtually all levels for many years and are often required in those classes/schools --> cost more because of relative lack of competition. (This paragraph is from a foggy memory, so I may have it at least partially wrong.) In the past, I only used TI calculators because they cost less than the HP calculators and were easier to understand without having to learn & get comfortable with HP's RPN. My first 3 TI calculators all cost the same: ~$120! In mid-'70s dollars, '80s dollars, & about 10 years ago when I bought a TI-89 Titanium. I also have one or two Casio calculators, like the fx-991 (whatever version) and an old Radio Shack Programmer's calculator that runs on one or two AA cells and the batteries last 10+ years, even with it's clock function running 100% of the time. Of course, it's not a scientific calculator, so I don't really count it. I'd like to get an HP or an HP-clone calculator just to play with and learn the use of an RPN calculator.
I'll try this again & hope that I don't hit another bad key combination that resets the video and loses everything I had typed.... If your college is similar to the one I went to, there are two separate, antagonistic to each other, groups of Professors: Practical & Theoretical. I honestly believe that most of my "theoretical" Professors never worked at a practical job (i.e., in industry) and after their PhDs, they immediately went into academia. They only teach what they know -- theory. My college had a few fairly practical courses in the Junior & Senior years, like Senior Project and some design classes that used real examples of problems that you might see in industry. If your new degree requires a Senior Project, or equal, contact the Professor(s) that teach(es) the course and ask for details so that you can start at least thinking about *your* Project. My project was based on converting a manually-run 5-ton punch press into an automatic punch press. In the last year of High School & both years at Junior College, I was a "Jack of all Trades" and set-up & ran the punch presses along with everything else that I did. I knew the 5-ton punch press very well. I designed the "upgrade" as inexpensively & simply as I could because the business was a family-owned business and didn't have "big bucks" to spend on things like that. I think that by doing that, where it could actually be put into use, disappointed several of my Professors because I didn't design something with all kinds of bells & whistles. But I did get a good grade from the Professor that ran that course. ;P One course (a Controls course) arranged for Teams of 4-5 students to visit local industry to study a problem that they had with the intent of using the Controls information to attempt to provide the businesses with a recommendation on how to solve their problem. My Team went to Ampex where they were manufacturing magnetic tape (I'm definitely dating myself here!) where they were having problems controlling the variable tensioning of their huge rolls of newly manufactured tape while the tape was slit into whatever finished width of tape was needed for their cassettes, video tapes, tapes used to record music in studios, etc. I don't recall what we recommended, but I definitely remember the visit to their manufacturing plant. Some Engineering colleges have (I think) non-credit programs where interested students worked on projects where they got good experience with design, planning, finances, manufacturing, teamwork, etc., to end up with things like a Baja race car designed & built by the students themselves with the requirement that they couldn't spend more than a set amount. Then the participating colleges all over the country (I think only in the U.S., but it could be internationally) competed by racing their cars against the other Teams. Think a small, "home" made amphibious cross-country type vehicle. I wasn't able to participate in my college's Baja project, but it certainly would have been fun! As far as getting a Certification or Professional Engineering (P.E.) License, you've first got to pass the E.I.T. test, work at least 5 years under a P.E. (or equivalent), and then pass the P.E. test for whichever State you are planning to work in as a P.E. Often other States won't recognize P.E. Licenses from "your" State (wherever you are) (at least they didn't always do so when I graduated), so you may not be able to work in other States as a P.E, without retaking the P.E. test there too. My college required that all students take & pass the E.I.T. before graduation, or you couldn't graduate.
I got this book less than a year ago. I love it :)

I got a ton of tools for my home lab. And subscribed to teachers' Patreons, found TH-cam channels to teach and challenge me, hired private tutors to go over challenging concepts and get way ahead of the game. I get emails about breakthroughs in the industry. I muse about projects and inventions with my friends. I play around with the social element of being involved in such an incredible study (and as a woman). Very little of my confidence or satisfaction came from school my first semester. But once those fundamentals are laid, and provided you do a lot of self study on your own, and you get deeper into the academics, I think you'll be challenged and satisfied and by that time have a network of great people & you will have figured out the applications of the knowledge and skills well enough to bring yourself fulfillment. It sounds a bit like you're facing the issue of the bored overachiever while the school has to tend to the people who are new to all of it. We have to feed that hunger on our own most of the time. I apprenticed under someone who was much older and more skilled than me and I also had my own cell phone repair service for a short time. I had to take a break from school & work to have an amputation & now I have an incredible piece of technology that allows me to walk and many friends who also use prosthetics who have been inspired to find their way into that industry. I'm not sure what you're experiencing but I know it's for yours and others' betterment. You're stretching yourself & addressing possible inadequacies in your system of learning & producing which you had to experience to notice & then fix. And you will, I think. Hope this comment was of any value to you.
@@krlabs5472Awesome I thought electrical but maybe in civil you do some electrical, or maybe you're pursuing electrical on the side. I wrote a really long comment which has now disappeared for me, maybe it posted or maybe it failed to post, but it probably didn't have much to do with your situation anyway. Lol
@@krlabs5472 But shorter version of that comment - do you think it being generalized instead of specialized is contributing to this feeling? What are you most passionate about so far? Do you plan to pursue that in more depth or wait and see where all of this is going?

Great video mate, not sure if it was mentioned and I missed it but is the symbology in this book to an IEC standard? I don’t want to drum symbols into my head and then run into other things which confuse me Thanks!
Hey KR Labs. Just a reminder that L'Hospital's rule is only applicable in the case where you get one of the two indeterminate forms 0/0 or (infinity)/(infinity) by naively plugging in the number you are approaching in the domain. Luckily the limit you are evaluating here has that property but I didn't hear you say anything about the fact that the numerator approaches zero along with the denominator. As a math teacher this is a place where many students make mistakes. Hope this doesn't come off as preachy or anything. I love your electronics textbook reviews by the way. I decided to pick up a couple on your recommendation. Best! 🙂
@learningasahobby790 that's right! I didn't mention that. Not preachy at all. I love that a fellow math teacher is keeping up with the channel and is even interested in electronics!? Thats awesome news. Obtaining a lot of great connections through this channel.

I've got an older edition of this book out in my shop. I need to dig it out and start it over. While listening to you talk about this book, for some reason a ~30-year-old memory popped up. I'm a Mechanical Engineer and had a project to combine three test stands into one in order to save limited floor space. As a hobby, I'd been studying "older" digital electronics books to help troubleshooting & repair of my minicomputers. I made a schematic of the three hydraulic systems and used Boolean algebra and a Karnaugh map to minimize the hydraulic valves required to give the modified test stand the combined functionality of all three stands. When I had started studying those books, I never dreamed of being able to successfully use that knowledge in an unconventional way. The Facility's best hydraulics guru told me that he had never seen a hydraulic system like I came up with by using only the parts from the old test stands. Studying books like Gibilisco's books always can give useful information/knowledge that can be used, in this case, many ways in electrical & electronics projects, along with using the info in sometimes unconventional ways. R.I.P Stan Gibilisco.

Finally, I was wondering which was that one book I used to refer while I was at school years ago. I had my doubts as to whether it was this book, but after seeing it in this video I'm sure it's the same book (8th edition too).
Thank you, Kelly, for sharing your message and being patient to communicate it. I'm glad I found your channel. You are a great example and inspiration for me and I'm sure a lot of people to pursue their intellectual interests. A salty person who had the time to insult you on the Internet surely needs help, in my opinion. When people are in pain and in solitude long enough, they tend to hurt others, and anonymity on the Internet only reinforces this behavior. I wish them courage to seek help and love. Please don't be discouraged because of their tantrum.
Good reference but too much physics to be called practical

Would you recommend this book as a starting point for someone completely new to the world of electronics? Or would you say it's more for people who already have a basic understanding?
It's best for people with prior knowledge. I just reviewed a book yesterday that would be perfect for you. Heres a link. th-cam.com/video/xLpvOEwwrEo/w-d-xo.html
I remember these books for their odd combination of foods with electronic components. I think they got rid of those covers for their 2022 edition because they can easily be confused with cookbooks from a distance. Nothing will catch my eyes scanning books on a shelf. I got the 6th Edition just to "read along."

I've read 'electrical principles' by Jennsion and Harper. Its good for electricians and workers. Still a lot of engineering information inside
A musician and a physics teacher? That’s awesome man!!! I also do music as a hobby and am going to start a degree in electrical engineering in Australia after studying Law which just wasn’t for me. Would you say this book is of any use if you don’t have a background in engineering? I’ve done advanced maths and physics in high school but that’s about it. Though I’m very keen to start studying early. Also, just a general question, how do you find music compared to physics/maths? I’ve never come across a person who is both a musician and a physics teacher/electronic engineer!
Hi Andrew thanks for the comment. This book would be of great use to you because it covers the most common circuit topology. If you have had advanced math and physics you'll do well. What I emphasize most on this channel is learning how to build, and that is why this book is so great. It will show you a circuit for each common function in electronics. If you are getting an EE degree, however, I would obtain a book that covers more theory and circuit analysis. Here is one of the books I've used in school. I will link it below. I view music as a science in the same sense as I do math and physics, in fact, music is math and physics. As a player, there are an infinite series of numerical patterns and combinations to master. The anatomy of musical instruments is also centered around physics... If they are Acoustic they they are centered around acoustical science, if they are electric they are centered around electronics. I love music paired with electronics because, unlike other areas in electronics, the truth and value of the circuit you've designed is not proven by accomplishing a function but by appealing to the senses. Audio circuits have to sound good or they are junk no matter if they were designed to the theoretical maximum. Most other areas in electronics do not have to meet that criteria. Music is what got me into electronics, and electronics is just applied physics.

Is this book good for a completely new hobbyist with a programming background? My physics concepts regarding current electricity is non-existent after years of departure from the subject but I'm keen on learning circuitry solely as a hobby and possibly to put my programming skills to more physical use. Is this book the right choice for me to get started from absolute scratch? I still remember some basic calculus and stuff.
This book is best used for someone who is interested in learning basic topology of the most common circuits. If you are looking to get into microcontrolers or firmware I wold find a book on embedded systems. It really depends on what you feel you need more help with. Designing circuits or getting sofware to talk to harware.
I learned all of this in elevator school
That series was the best. Had them all.
I've always been interested in this stuff, but just decided to delve so I can start making some little projects for fun and potentially a bit of profit. I have a feeling that book and I will be friends. I want to get that Grob book also, because I feel like I can finally grasp math, and you mentioned it goes more into calculus/algebra. (I'm middle aged, and um, 'life happened' as they say)
Your off to a great start
I just picked up a copy of this recently. At the moment I'm working through Charles Platt's Make: Electronics but I was planning on doing some of the projects in Mims' book after.
I still have the original version of this book, it has a green cover which looks more like a notebook, and yes there's still some useful circuits in there. It's a good book to start with if you're interested in electronics.
The stuff around 29:20 contradicts your 'evergreen' statement. You even say so yourself pointing out this is outdated.... 🤔
