Holiday Shopping: Take These Steps To Earn MAX Rewards This Season!
Everyone spends more during the Holidays. Presents, trips, family gatherings, and dining out have us shelling out more than normal. While Nicole and I budget for the Holidays, we also work hard to maximize the rewards we earn on all that spending - to "pointify" that spend.
Here are some of the cards we're using to do so:

    Hi Ryan, I am just discovering the world of hotel CC's. As an AMEX platinum card holder, I have gold status with Hilton and Marriott. My question is; do you think it would be worthwhile to obtain a Hilton, or Marriott CC, or would it simply be redundant?

    • @travelpointsfamily
      @travelpointsfamily หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well you certainly jumped in with both feet! Without knowing your other cards, it's hard to say. But the Platinum card doesn't earn points very well; it's not an earner - it's a benefits card. I think Hilton Gold is better than Marriott Gold, so I would lean more towards a Hilton card. The Hilton Surpass earns a ton of Hilton points and has a reasonable annual fee of $150 with easy to use credits. I'd look at that next. Unless you're a total baller and want to throw down for the Aspire at $550. Thanks for watching!

    • @travelpointsfamily

      All 135K points need to be earned during the same calendar year. If you've already earned the 80K, you should see if you can get the remaining 45K you need before December 31st (holding the card will give you a 10K boost towards the Companion Pass). Your flight analysis at the end, yeah you might be getting more cpp but you need a ton more points. Again if you’re preaching about family travel, you’re going to have to spend a ton to get everyone those same business class flights. The math doesn’t work out for me. I also look at it through the lens of how many trips can I make my points work for me on. I might be able to get 2 or 2.5 “low end” vacations out of those same points by flying “economy” and not staying at resorts. I would rather have the multiple trips in one year versus one all out trip. As they say, YMMV. Flights don’t make up that much time in your vacation as a percentage of time spent, but they are definitely an expensive portion of the total cost. Our family is all about trying to figure out how to stretch the budget for 1-2 trips and turn it into 3-4 trips/year. We’ve previously been to Oahu and the Big Island all on cash purchases for flights. This year I was able to qualify for SW Companion Pass, catch the day of tickets opening for March 2025 and was able to use points for 3 tickets plus a free companion. Also I just checked prices on the exact same flights three weeks later and the cash price has doubled!!! Feeling good about my purchase and I was able to do it with a lot less points, so I can still travel more with my remaining points balance. Good stuff, appreciate the content you are putting out.

      @@travelpointsfamilyone of the things I like about your approach is the family side of it. Not that the info that these young singles putting out isn’t great, but the game is a little different when trying to travel as a family. I like how you touched on the SW Companion Pass in your Utah trip video. I have that too. Booked our first no cash out of pocket (except fees) on SW for our family or 4 to Seattle the end of September and we scored a sweet deal for spring break to Maui on SW all on SW points. One thing I do to rack up a few extra SW points is rent hotels through SW. I compare the prices to other websites and try to only get the ones with big bonuses that they have not substantially increased the cost for. 5,000 points here, 10,000 there you can get some serious bonus points. Plus you can use whatever favorite travel card you want and get 2x, 3x, whatever on the actual “cost” of the hotel too. Do you do anything similar to this, I haven’t really heard anyone else talk about these extra niche ways of earning points. I’m sure there are others that are probably company and/or card specific.

    By spending $15,000 on the Surpass card, you'll receive a free night certificate worth $500 and accumulate between 60,000 to 90,000 Hilton Honors points, valued at $300 to $540. This translates to a return ranging from $800 to $1040, or about 5.33% to 6.93%, which is a reasonable return for frequent Hilton guests. This does not include the $200 resort credits - the $150 annual fee. Nor does it factor the 12x on Hilton spend and gold status.

    You have to remember that there’s two arms, the personal and the business at a bank. I can get approved for most business cards through Amex, but I struggle to to get personal approval The Amex popup doesn’t mean you can’t get approved for the card. Many people have seen the popup and still gotten approved. It just means you’re not eligible for the welcome bonus at that moment. Try changing web browsers, using incognito mode, and different links to improve your chances of getting approved. People might suggest spending more or other tactics, but the truth is only Amex knows why the popup appears. It might be related to regional promos, income levels, credit scores, or account behavior like frequent openings and closings or late payments. Keep trying. I’ve had three instances where I initially got the popup but was approved later by using incognito mode and different links. Just persist!

    My only issue with the Bonvoy Brilliant is that it earns Marriott points. If it earned Cashback or Amex Membership Reward points, I would have 2. I’ve never gotten more than 0.3cpp of actual value from a Marriott point redemption. (The list price of the room they upgrade me to might be $1100 at time of upgrade, but I would never book a room and pay more than $300, so the value of the upgrade room is still capped at $300).

      I'm not going to spread hate on Marriott points (there are some people who love them dearly), but I hear your point. There are definitely stronger ecosystems out there that I target my spending at. Marriott is not my first choice for hotels, but I still find positive value out of this card each year. Thanks for watching and stay tuned for my next video - I'll be talking about my first choice of hotel stays.

    I'm looking into applying for the Brilliant. Was the 2nd free night award a part of the Amex offers?

      The 2nd free night was an offer you had to enroll in through Marriott. The Brilliant provides 1 FNA on each card anniversary - which has the potential for HUGE value! Thanks for watching!

    I have the WF journey. I know is the one with the least transfer parents but I like its flexibility without the need of using travel portals. Plus I am sure they will be adding more transfer partners in the future. The feel of the card is also great.

      @paulnoguera2110 I think you're right about them adding more transfer partners and that will add a lot of value to the card. Thanks for watching!
