The Propeller Fell off My Airplane
Last summer I fulfilled my dream of buying this homebuilt airplane and flying it halfway across the country. Unfortunately on my first major flight away from home I experienced an in flight crankshaft failure resulting in the propeller completely departing the plane in flight. I'm heartbroken to say this will be the end of my journey with this little plane. Above all I'm grateful that the situation resulted in a safe outcome.
The cause of the crankshaft failure is currently unknown. Since there were no injuries or property damage, the NTSB chose not to investigate. Some theories include improper assembly of the crank hub, fatigue cracks, or a blockage of oil to the front bearing.
Thank you all for the support and kind words on my previous video, it means more than you know.

Flying the most affordable airplane across America
มุมมอง 1.5Mปีที่แล้ว
The Sonex experimental airplane was designed with 2 things in mind: simplicity and affordability. With an operating cost of around $25 an hour, this plane perfectly fit my mission. After years of saving and months of planning I'm finally able to call one of these little planes my own! Come along for the journey as we fly this Sonex experimental aircraft halfway across the country. Thanks for wa...
Flying backwards in a Cessna 152!
มุมมอง 16K2 ปีที่แล้ว
40 knot head winds and a 35 knot stall speed allowed us to start flying backwards over the ground! We took a Cessna 152 from the Purdue University airport (KLAF) up to 9,500' to see if we could complete the negative ground speed challenge. Thanks for watching! The Controversial Plane Crash of David Lesh
มุมมอง 19K2 ปีที่แล้ว
A Beechcraft Bonanza A36 flown by the controversial figure David Lesh suffered a power loss resulting in a forced water landing off the coast of Half Moon Bay in California. Another pilot flying a Cessna 182 filmed the event from above. The shocking footage of the event brought about national attention as the event blew up online. This sparked debate into the true nature of the plane crash and ...

audio is TOO processed. You're great but tune it! Keep it up :)
as a FPV/Cine Drone 'Pilot', your video has inspired me to do what you did here. Thank you
imagine your atc someone just says over the Radio "Yo my prop fell off ima land on the highway wish me luck 👍" LMFAO
I'm not fully aware of how this automotive engine is set up for a plane but do you use a torsional vibration damper? As others have posted the strains of a prop are different to a clutch on a car. Swap out for a suitable aero engine and keep flying👍
Plot twist: propeller will fall off, news at 11.
5:38 West Virginian here. Just wanted to comment and say Appalachian is pronounced with ah-Chin not aye-shin. I colleague of mine made a video in college at WVU with historians and linguistics professors to settle the debate
VW Golf owner plus pilot here. I don't trust my car on the ground. It would be crazy trying to drive it in the air.
This video made my heart happy. What watch were you wearing??
I love this video because I just bought a Sonex!
Amazing job landing. But those home made aircraft should not be allowed to fly PERIOD
Ok rich boy
cry louder man, can't hear you
The Police: Nobody wants to be a police officer anymore! Also the Police: 8 cars show up for a resolved emergency.
Grand Lake out of nowhere!
Ah, so now we see why not everyone just flies around all the time instead of driving.
Jabaru engine?
Great video, great story well told! I have admired Sonex aircraft for a decade or more. A lot of bang for the buck. I have ppl but have only flown rental 172. I have a fear of ultralights and homebuilts due to the light controls and susceptibility to turbulence. The CEO of Sonex died a couple years ago crashing in a Sonex.
Thank the Lord he never got his mane too wet. Thank the Lord again, for having a nice new phone for him to record everything. And finally, thank the Lord again for YooToob.
Oh man. Sorry about your loss. I love how it had room for a passenger. Very romantic!
Such a deep voice for a 12 year old
Yer were using all them crap clamp fittings boy. You sure you didn't lose oil pressure and the sump went dry. I wouldn't trust them things to suck cows milk off the teat
سترك ربي قل الحمد لله
Are you miming your voice in the video?
Whens the bext video and when is the next plane?
I so enjoyed your adventure, thank you for allowing so many to smile.
God gave you a second chance, and thankfully you were wise enough to do the right thing which is to always prioritize your safety first! stay safe
I thought there was going to be a GoFundMe at the end.
The front fell off
My first thought also was "You can't park there!"
great job. Aviate, navigate, communciate.. Sounds like you did it all perfect. Key takeaways here you survived!
nit pick, but potentially life saving advice for anyone loading a trailor; always load the highest weight closer to the vehicle. otherwise glad you survived.
😂 Lmao landed by the “Auto Credit” sign 😂
You ight want to consider eventually electrifying your powerplant, to electric. The Cessna 172 for a long while already has an electric version of its plane. The technology is and has been here for a while and is of course certifiable. Might look up Cessna, or other small craft companies for electric models. No crankshafts to break, fuel problems and the other myriad of fossil fuel issues one may have. electric is quiet, climate friendly and might be actually cheaper. Might consider it.
Nope get a cert engine install change cowling an go
Wait u were the person that was training?
What is that red button next to the throttle? Great video
wow i did not know the boxer engines where also used in small air planes also used in the old BMW motorbikes
Curious why the plane was loaded backward on the trailer. It seems like for aerodynamics and weight distribution forward would have been better. Was there a reason to load it backward?
Shoutout Portage county, go flashes!
4:01 "You can't park there!"
Great video…you earned my subscription. Where next?
His next video is “the propeller fell off my plane” and then he stopped uploading
How sad that you’ve chosen to get rid of her. She’s a beautiful little bird & particularly with all the work you’ve put in to date. Why didn’t you opt for a replacement engine & traditional wooden prop. As far as I recall, the 1835 VW has a forged (not cast) crankshaft with a beefier front bearing. Ive never heard of a forged crank failure.
did you ever find out where the prop went?
i think you need that..
Have you ever found the propeller?
You had the potential power move on the commercial flight home to look over at your seating partner during takeoff and absently mention how the last flight you were on had the prop fall off midflight.
god it's such a dick thing to do to someone during a miserable experience but I can't pretend the 'you can't park there' heckle to a plane accident did make me chuckle.
I have no real interest in flying but your journey and stories was really interesting. Thanks for sharing
Damn , a shear failure of the propeller shaft? Did you find the problem? I feel like it is related to the propeller shaft material.
You can't park there😊
Boeing I guess?
