There are only two places you can mold "gun retention" into a leather holster. The ejection port and the trigger guard. These 3 examples have just the trigger guards molded because of the design limitations of these holsters. A properly molded and broken in iwb holster should be able to be turned upside down and the gun will not fall out. If you shake it then it should start to move. This is pe...

Hey Eric, Great video....I have a question when making a pattern for a revolver do you need to make a larger pocket toward the top where the cylinder is or do you make it flat like a simi auto?
@@TPMAKHOME great question. I always make the top a little wider in the stitch line as the cylinder takes up more space. If you give the stitchline more room, it will even out when you insert the mold/gun. Does that answer your question? On j/k frames I’ll go 1/8”-3/16” wider at the top. On l/n frames. A touch more. Maybe out to 1/4”
@@TPMAKHOME I always make the difference in measurement at the top of the holster and make it using one continuous straight line from the bottom. Starting as normal at the bottom. Again hope that helps.
@@ericlarsenhbeleatherworks4992 Thanks Eric the info was great. Yes, that answered my question, I have only made a couple of wheel gun holsters the other one I made was a J frame and I had a pattern for it already. This (K frame)was my first attempt to make a pattern for one of those from scratch. The holster turned out well on the first try due to your advice. This customer wanted Shark and Alligator on it so it was an expensive rig, I really did not want to do a bunch of trial and error on it. If I had not had your help my options would have been to use more leather and make and test if I had it right to do a lessons learned version. Thanks, I really appreciate the help. You da man!
Thank you for the help!!
Wondering is there is a certain distance there should be between the gun and stitch line?
I keep the stitch line within an inch max and try and keep it within 5/8” on the trigger side. If it’s a strong wide carry? Ie 3:00 and they never move it. You can give the sight side more room for the holster to wrap around the body a little more. Especially if they are very thin. But generally try and go 1” on that side as well. If they are too wide the holster will walk away from the body. Or can… Hope that helps. Be well and thanks for the question.
@@ericlarsenhbeleatherworks4992 thanks!
What do you think of hardening the leather after completion ?
I’ve never had to add any hardness to leather honestly. I know there are different ways to harden leather….waxes, heat, chemical etc Ive always used back strap and molded it in a way that I’ve never needed any additional stiffness. Sorry I can’t help with your question.
Do you have similar video for IWB? Sorry if I'm just overlooking it.
I would love to do one actually The problem is having 1 of each style of holster around to do the video. Lots n lots of holsters. But I’ll see what I can do fairly soon. Thanks for the comment.
How about building a gunbelt? Weight leather, double layer, what's your idea of a good belt?
I could do that. Great idea. I’ll see what I can do. Thank you.
Eric, can I do this to a holster I purchased from Falco for my Astra .357 Magnum revolver that fits slightly loose. I'd really like to tighten the fit. Any thoughts
Maybe….If it’s been dyed and clear coated then it will be harder but you can try. Get a fan you can hang it in front of. Get the holster wet with hot hot water…from a sink. Mold it where you think it needs it and let it dry in front of the fan. As it dries keep molding it a little bit. Mold it around your new gun for the first little bit. After that? It will shrink up more without the gun in it. So let it dry without the gun in it the last bit. Hope that helps.
@@ericlarsenhbeleatherworks4992 yes it's dyed and finished. I will try it and see how it turns out. If anything shrinking it just a little bit will be an improvement. Thank you for your swift response.
@@egger46 anytime. The hotter the water and the longer it dries. The more of a chance it will shrink a tad. Be safe.
really good video.answered alot of questions
Thank you Eric for sharing your experience. It's much appreciated!
For a cross draw, I prefer to take up less space on the belt. I accomplished this with a modified pancake. You still have the traditional belt loop on the right (sight side) of the weapon, but the side of the leather against the body has an extra piece of leather sewn on. The belt is fed between the 2 layers, so the 2nd belt loop is hidden from the front view. This means there’s only enough leather exposed on the trigger guard side for your stitch line. This makes the weapon easier to grab. The extra piece of leather can be positioned to accommodate a steeper cant if desired.
How bout IWB ?
What do you use for clear coat? TIA
Thanks for the info! Just what I needed! I watched the other videos of the molding, those were great too! Very clean work sir!
Thank you. Glad You guys are still watching these. I need to make some more videos.
Where do you get the bull hide?
Do you have a picture of this cross draw on your website? There is a pic for a 1911 for sale. Is that the one patterned on this Video? Would a similar pattern work well for a MP Shield? Does it hold close to the body? Thanks!
You've got some great suggestions here already! As a new guy, it's almost limitless, lol. You're videos are great and far easier to learn from than most I've seen. If you don't hear it a lot, THANK YOU, it is GREATLY appreciated. I'd love to see a detailed video on pattern design and one on making an anti carjacking rig similar to the "carjacker".
Eric, Thank you for sharing the information. I'm just starting to play with leather (for personal use and a few gifts) for belts, sheaths and holsters. As a middle age, retried due to line of duty disability (Deputy Sheriff), getting god info and techniques is a blessing. It's always a balancing act between the budget and not losing one's mind to boredom. Most Depts. don't have great disability pensions, contrary to popular opinion. Keep posting, please! There are a lot of videos out there but most are not detailed enough for most to learn and feel comfortable jumping into a project. I'd love to see you do a anti carjack cross draw! In the mean time, shoot me your logo and I'll gladly make you a vinyl decal. It's another little hobby! hardwatercustoms62@gmail.com - Ray
I bought three Blade Tech IWB Loops and they are not snapping in at all. Maybe I am not understanding it or they are just terrible build and overpriced.
They have pull the dot fasteners or one way snaps. Look at the snap, you have to hook the bottom first and then roll them over to snap them. They unhook the opposite way. Hope you didn’t ruin the snaps? I’ve had clients hammer them and ruin them before. Look up pull the dot fasteners.....they can be really tight when new.
@@ericlarsen Thank you for your fast reply. It is working now. My spring did not look the same as yours. I guess the machine did not punch it completely on one side. They others two are fine, after I understood the process. Again, thank you!!!
Fun fact: I was already holding the hammer in my hand when I received your message.
Wonderful words from a level headed man Help yourself help your neighbors and family and downsize your life for a while remember what’s important
I don't use paper stitch patterns on my Askins wraparounds either. I let the leather with the piece in it, show me the stitch line. Just as you demonstrated. I also saw a saddle maker pull the leather tight on a Cheyenne roll to determine the stitch line with a pair of modified duct workers vise grips. I use the same technique and the line draws itself.
Looking good, what leather thickness you were using ?
Either 7/8 wickett n Craig.
are we still buddies, just lost 180
Just found your channel from a video from Adams Leatherworks. Good stuff.
Atta boy. Stay cool and make something.
Great to you have a picture of the finish product
Ross Name it’s on IG and Facebook I think.
Do you have a video of an Avenger pattern making and holster and build?
Tommy Cavazos no I don’t but can make one. That would be a long video......I’ll see what I can do for you.
As someone just starting out, I really appreciate all the valuable information you share. It’s really set me off on the right foot
You mention two places where retention is enhanced in the manufacture/ molding process - the trigger guard and the ejection port. Are there two places for revolvers or only the trigger guard?
Revolvers are obviously different. I usually take the back panel/or back side up over the cylinder and as a little retention there as well.
Good video, thanks for sharing!
Cab you provide some info as to why you would use horse over cow for a holster?
Matt Williams horse or bull are used when you need that extra density....like banding a mouth or reinforcing a part of your holster. Since it’s denser it’s also more moisture resistant. So I use it a lot for very humid areas For back panels. It Keeps sweat off of the gun a little longer. It’s also denser so you can go thinner. If you want a thin thin holster that still has a lot of strength horse or bull will allow you to do this. Cowhide can be used for everything else. Dryer environments, basic holsters that don’t need anything strengthened etc. Does that help?
"If ya aint cheat'n, ya aint try'n!" haha Good lil pointer Mr Larsen. Thank you again.
Good for you Mr Larsen, and that was a Class Act from Mr Fuller! You've been helpful to him, and he returns the gesture: How high calibre people behave. Good for both of ya!
Excellent advice. I do make holsters, good ones I should say but never thought about it. God bless.
Antonio Barreto thank you. I appreciate it.
Did you do anything for a sight channel?
Yes. I use 1/4 dowels. I make sure there’s plenty of room.
If like to see a video on the avenger holster style pattern making.
How to fix mistakes would be great, such as excess glue on the front of the leather holster that you don’t realize until it is oiled, a skipped stitch on a sewing machine, an accidental cut in the finished leather. All of your videos have been amazingly helpful, thank you!
Great Permanent Waves shirt. Was a great tour
Did I miss the test?! I'm sorry I was running late professor!
My PCR holster now. I recognized the little round spot on the Elephant next to the clip! I did freshen it up though as it was kind of rough when I got it from you.Dyed and sealed the leather again to make it presentable.
FERGIE
Crosspoint Holsters yes. Fergie. 😍
I want to make my own holster kinda like this is there a pattern i can get somewhere do i know how to cut my leather? Thanx👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I cant tell but is he putting a lot of pressure on it??🤔🤔🤔
Where do you find Pull the Dot Fastners? Any what type of snap setter is used. Thanks
Don Kenner I get them directly from scoville. www.dotfasteners.com/ I use 3 pcs and screw then down with 6-32 t nuts and 6-32x3/8” screws. I use the standard length caps with regular snap loops. I use the longer ones with exotic loops....to compensate for the extra thickness. Hope that helps. Thanks for the comment.
Don Kenner sorry. I use a standard hand setter on them, but sink the little pc into the leather with a vise....carefully not to over compress them. After I press it into the leather with a vise then I use a standard setter with a mallet.
I learned a lot already from watching your videos. Im trying to work with exotic leathers. I made a knife sheath with stingray. Turned out ok for a beginner. I'd like watch a video of showing us how to properly work with exotic leathers.
chris vaello ohhhhh good one. That would be a series of videos. One for exotics that behave and problem exotics like stingray/ostrich/etc. thank you.
I would love to see a video on magazine pouch design and build . I’m new to leather so anything helps . I really enjoy your videos and have learned quite a bit from them already. Thanks
Jason Good Thank you...it’s a good suggestion. :)
With just wrapping the leather around the gun like that, how do you get good retention once you stitch things together and put the gun back in?
Tom Anderson this video is just to get your stitchline. Of course you need to mold it after that for proper retention. Hope that answers your question? This video is just for taco style Holsters as they are harder to get an accurate stitchline than a 2 pc holster. All leather holster rely on molding for proper retention.
But I thought in order to get proper retention you really need the holster just a tad bit undersized so that when it's wet you pretty much have to cram the gun in there and then follow up with molding, particularly around the trigger guard. No?
Tom Anderson absolutely not true. My mentor had me make a glue only pancake. No stitching. I wore it around my shop for a year before I changed anything. Stitchlines are a big illusion we have as makers. It’s the molding that has retention. That’s it. Stitchlines keep the molding where it’s supposed to be for 10-20 years but they are soooo over blown. Hope that makes sense. Look at my site, IG or facebook and mine are consistent but not right on the Gun all of time.
Gotcha. Thanks.
Tom Anderson anytime.....
Where did you find those buffing wheels?
Don Kenner ....amazon or most shoe shop supply houses have them.
Thank you.
Good job man
Awesome. Now for a full video including stitching in the belt clip.... And where's the cigarette?
Devin Darwin The reason I didn’t get into that is you can have a belt slot, tunnel loop, spring clip or snap loops. Way to much to cover.....yet the stitchline is always the same. So that’s what I covered. The smoke is burning in the ashtray.
Thank you Eric!
