    Sad you should say this doesn't have Stanley K stamp on this movie or some would say a signature movie is solely productioñ. So what you're really saying all the other folks specially Kirk Douglas have their hands on the handle stirring the soup on the stove.. Well that's okay the movie was still a pretty masterful production. All the actors they're put out their best in this movie.. remember this is like a political message during the Red scare and the continuous censorship during the late forties and 50s and into the 60s seeking to root out communist subliminal messages. Will this movie would be a good case and point talking about subliminal messages.. A stand up and put on notice the Roman empire. You might kill us now but you won't stop the dream to be free. Because nobody will stop fighting for this cause. While Kirk died on the cross along with crew along the Appalachian way clear Bloom hold up their child towards Kirk and says he will be free something to that effect. Sadly 2000 years later people are still enslaved in the name of religion ideologies communism fascism capitalism and whatnot.

      You just gave me a whole new perspective on this movie. I think I’ve been too focused on comparing it to Kubrick’s other work-because, well, it’s Kubrick-but you’re absolutely right about the bigger picture. We recorded this a couple of years ago and I can't remember if we discuessed the Red Scare comparison or not. I think it's time for a rewatch. Thanks for sharing your insights!

    My grandmother took me to see this when I was 7 years old , 1960 ! I rooted for the Romans ever since I saw them line up for the final battle . There were the Romans , lined in Maniples , dressed the same ( Cool ) . The Prinipals , The Haste , then the Triari . Perfect order for the perfect killing machine ! Sparticus ? I thought it was Wood Stock in 9 years ? One big mass ? A large Mob , no wonder they crucified them ! I am 70 years old and have a Roman Centurions uniform , my sons name is Julius Caesar and my grandson ? Roman ! She also told me to go to the library to find out the real story , not the Hollywood version . I used this " Fact Finding " to study the Battles of the Greasy Grass , The Alamo , The Boarer War ( 1891 ) and countless others . I also have a 4,000 unit Roman Legion of 1/72 hand painted Roman plastic figures , with an 900 Egyptian and 700 Gaul / Celts allies . " MAKE ROME GREAT AGAIN "

    I agree with Keanu doesn't fit with that role or setting at all. He is so tied in with the matrix for me, and that was where he shined, so maybe I can't see him in a 19th century role. He seemed awkward and dumb, just not believable here, since he is so futuristic. I think Winona R. was the perfect choice as well as whoever that actor was that was dracula. I loved their chemistry.

    I’m sorry to say this but this movie was overrated af. Same with No Country For Old Men. The characters were all aholes and there was no arc. Stuff happened and ya could give a crap less why and to whom. I’m happy that the actors got some recognition for their performances but yeah, won’t be a rewatch that’s for sure.

    REBECCA 1940 starts off as a romantic comedy where our unnamed protagonist meets an aristocrat named Maxim de Winter. They keep their relationship as a secret from her employer, Edythe Van Hopper. It's quite engaging. I can't wait to see--Oh, wait. That movie is over, because he proposes and there's a time jump. Now, it's a drama about the pressure of being a widower's second wife as well as a thriller about arriving at a new place and being the only one kept in the dark due to so much secrecy. Why did we need that beginning at all? If the movie had started at Maxim's mansion, would the plot have been any different? This wouldn't bother me so much if this second part hadn't been so badly-paced and repetitive. Luckily, Joan Fontaine's performance is good. None of the actors in REBECCA 2020 do a bad job, but no one truly stands out either. The beginning lacks its predecessor's witty banter that made me laugh out loud, but this version of Mrs. Van Hopper was written better. Therefore, despite not being that relevant to the movie when looking at the big picture, she still leaves an impression. The imagery during the nightmare sequences is creative and it's a relief that this adaptation of Daphne du Maurier's novel includes the elements that were removed from the first adaptation (mainly due to the Hays Code). Unfortunately, it's the same plot (flaws and all), so it's still a chore to sit through. *Spoilers ahead!* Both installments conclude with Mrs. Danvers (the evil housekeeper) setting the mansion on fire. The original concentrated on showing that more than wrapping the story up. This remake is less abrupt, because the focus is on the characters (which is less intense yet more meaningful) and because there's an epilogue where the de Winters get ready to leave the past behind and start a new life. However, a "clean slate" ending only works when the characters reflect on what they've been through up until that point. Here, it comes off as if they're ignoring their experiences. It eliminates the weight of all the drama. 4/10 for both.

    Now that I’m thinking about it, I have even more to say about Michael Mann. Going back and watching Miami Vice, the ending is very similar. A song begins and the hero walks away, leaving his past behind. Chris Nolan said Dark Knight was inspired by Mann, and that film ends with the hero driving away into the night, leaving his former identity behind him. That’s crazy. -Mitch

    Obi-Wan’s connection to Luke and Leia saves him, Luke’s connection to Vader saves Vader and the galaxy. Yet in the Book of Boba Fett, Luke makes Grogu choose family or the “Jedi” order. Makes no sense bc the whole point was that the old Jedi were wrong but then Disney tries to make Luke use the old Jedi ways in the sequels.

    • @brandenrayselman
      @brandenrayselman 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I didn't even think about that. It is interesting. Maybe the point of the scene with Grogu is LucasFilm trying to bridge the gap between Luke from Return of the Jedi and Luke in The Last Jedi? I know tons of people aren't fans of The Last Jedi but since it's canon maybe they're trying to make it make sense lol
