You should select in x-ray mode or wire-frame

I'm working on 3ds Max for almost 20 years and NEVER used this type of extruding, shown in the video. The topology is just broken and useless after them.
The tool is there, is up to the artist how he uses it, I personally used it a lot and was one of the thing I missed when I moved to blender

For the first operation you should've used bridge edge loops on blender makes life way easy !
BTW, When I set Rotation/Pan/Scale view in Blender to maya mode, it started to runs like butter.

Try using only Blender for two months, not max at all, and if you have a problem, you can turn to Chatgpt, so that you can improve faster

well, maybe 3ds max has this feature now, but its noting special, it's like push pull in sketchup. Also, blender developers can do this literally in 1 day if they want to. Its not in their radar right now but if community wants this it will be implemented easily.

for hard surface modelling I think max is the best

@@Техничка-з9у Макс 30 лет не может пофиксить нихера. А то что новое делает все сделано на отьебись. Вон ноды прикрутили - через жопу.. и нахрен они никому не нужну.. для сравнение можешь глянуть что делают люди с нодами в блендере
