I am going to try this for the CPA exam.
I top my board exam using combination of active recall, like answering multiple choice questions and this is also time efficient unlike passively reading again2x.
How can you active recall something you havent studied beforehand, by reading it marking it, highlighting it.. etc..
He is implying don't just passively read the material again and again. But actively recalling if you really know what you are studying.
You have raised a valid point. I think active recall is most effective if you understand the concepts. No one talks about how to achieve understanding in a short amount of time.
Reading, marking and highlighting alone isnt enough to learn a concept. You have to actually understand it. You Can do this by reflecting on a concept by asking yourself questions about a concept or key notion without looking at notes. Ill provide an example. Notion: Schematic thinking. Schematic thinking is a form of thinking that involves fast, automatic thought processes. Schematic thinking can also be labelled as ‘intuition’. Although intuition is a highly regarded aspect of cognition in most societies, evidence suggests that schematic thinking can sometimes be incorrect. Incorrect thoughts or judgements due to schematic (automatic) thinking is known as false intuition. Schematic thinking can be incorrect due to factors such as bias, emotions and also a lack of reasoning or evidence. An example of schematic thinking is Stereotyping. Not all stereotypes are correct, therefore constant use of stereotyping would inevitably lead to false intuition ( incorrect judgement ). Therefore to minimise false intuition it is important for individuals to use reasoning and evidence when possible in order to have a logical perspective. Logic ( reasoning based on evidence) Reflection: Can you reflect on a time you used schematic thinking and made the error of false intuition? Can you define stereotyping and explain what it lacks compared to logic? Other forms of active learning is paraphrasing- rewording in simpler form I hope this helps lol.
