The problem with the Apps folder is solved
I’ve offered to build systems for Haiku
Ok
Norton turned into (or was bought by?) Symantec and yes, it is still around although they're not as big as they used to be in the desktop space. They're focusing on their enterprise products and services now.
do you have a tutorial on how to build haiku and maybe hits about the source code. i feel it's an interesting project
Nitpicking: Data != Datei; I guess some feature requests are due 😊
no Terminal Open here (?)
I think you are interpreting the test results incorrectly, as to me those aren't scores and instead they show the test progress.
Dateimeister means data commander. It is on the titlebar
MS Windows comes with a native clipboard manager since Oct 2018. 😊
Good video
Netsurf is good
From which region of the 🌎 are you? I am intrigued by your accent ;)
Born in the Netherlands, but I've lived in South Africa for 55 years.
@@InsideHaikuApps-mf4gc Very interesting vita :) Thx for sharing...
how's thar bar to the left called?
Launchbox. See Episode 50
@@InsideHaikuApps-mf4gc Will check out the tool and the episode. Merci
Спасибо за Ваши видео!
How does ot handle printing and dpes haiku os require certain printers and or can it run older printers like a dot matrix printer
What program is this dock you have on the left hand side?
Launchbox. You'll find it in the Desktop applets section of the Deskbar menu. Adjust the settings till it looks the way you want it. Then put a symlink in /boot/home/config/settings/boot/launch to have it start up with every boot.
i like your videos! Very curious about Haiku. I'm thinking of buying a second hand Intel PC notebook (I only have Macs at home) to run it natively. I have been running it in VirtualBox on Linux (running on an old Intel Mac) and it's just so nice to use. For some reason my Intel MacBook Pro doesn't wanna boot into Haiku natively.
Intel Macs are notoriously problematic at booting Haiku, There are a lot of discussions about that on the forums.
@ I learned it the hard way, I guess.
I am watching this video on a Haiku laptop in a web browser :) Haiku has come a long ways :) I am a relatively new user, and I realize I have entered the Haiku world at a good time - enjoying the fruit of the great amount of work the developers have done. Thanks to all!
Thanks for sharing!
I plan on switching from q4os Linux to haiku OS
That's fantastic! Do you have any questions for us Haiku users?
@InsideHaikuApps-mf4gc can I pay someone a few bucks, to put haiku OS onto a thumb drive and ship it to me?
Will it run a dot matrix printer on haiku OS?
Doubt it. Haven't seen one of those in twenty years.
@InsideHaikuApps-mf4gc every printer Ive used, on cups on Linux failed me and I end up arguing with the printer so my first goes through it. I never had issues with a dot matrix printer, just newer printers lol.
Love the content. Seems to be the only one that focuses on how to use Haiku as a daily driver. I've got one issue though and I'm not able to find a solution as yet. I need to access some smb shares on a server. My Windows and FreeBSD system can do it, but not Haiku - even after installing FuseSMB. It's not able to see the shares or the network.
Above my pay grade, but perhaps this forum thread will help: discuss.haiku-os.org/t/mounting-a-windows-smb-share-to-haiku/15617
Thank you!! Very helpful to me on my programming and Haiku journey!
Glad it helped!
Any idea where to get a copy of Gobe Productive ? Would you share yours ?
[cough] Beshare [cough]
This is SO cool! I had no idea there were all these Tracker add-ons! Neat! I'll have to install a bunch of these and try them out! Excellent Haiku video! I think most (if not all) users will find these really helpful! And unique!!
I'm glad you liked it!
Hmm can we contact somebody about this or was the project abandoned?
There is no indication that the project has been abandoned. Yesterday we were still debating on the forums. Somebody has to pay once a year to renew the domain name, probably the Haiku, Inc non-profit that was set up for this sort of thing. We've all been there. You forget that your credit card has expired and suddenly your Netflix account is not working. In this case, however, A domain name squatter grabbed our name the second it became available.
@@InsideHaikuApps-mf4gc You must have a redemption periode before anyone else can take the domain. Proberly it is your hosting company that wants to make some extra cents.
Assuming it's available for Haiku, you could use a terminal multiplexer like tmux or zellij and then panes, tabs, and more, all within the default Haiku terminal emulator.
tmux is in the depot. I think it is a bit too techy for the channel at this stage, but it is the sort of thing I may look at later after I've picked all the low-hanging fruit. I have tried to compile mtm, a much, much simpler multiplexer on github, but there's a weird dependency I haven't been able to figure out yet.
BePDF seems to be integrated into base Haiku now, I got it packaged with my 32bit install.
I've recently seen that too. It comes as default in 32-bit installs, but not in 64-bit. There's a self-imposed limit on making the installer fit on a DVD, I think, so they ran out of space. Even if, in reality, everybody installs from a USB stick.
Progress! And we're heading in the right direction! Thanks for the video :)
I'm glad you think so!
Really cool app! I'll have to install in on my Haiku machine and play around with it. Great video!
Let me know what you discover!
When I saw Gobe running, I'm like, "that's a beautiful application!" What a shame it doesn't run on x86_64
When I saw Gobe running I thought "this is a VM"... and I was right. 🙂 By the way the music (Hall of the Mountain King) while Gobe is running was perfectly fitting.
Hehe, sorry about the clickbait, but it's a little more interesting than "Let's talk about QEMU" ...
Tried it and learned there is no wifi usb support. Maybe next year.
The color sensing and live UI management is amazing.
Some great points. Better audio would really help your videos.
Working on it!
I can’t speak for the project but the plan from Michael Phipps was to release R1 with 32-bit support and _then_ freeze.
A really thorough and well-thought through video. I don't think any of your points were unreasonable. I think you hit the nail on the head with all these points! My subscription to your channel continues! I wonder how many resources are currently being spent on the development of the 32-bit architecture for Haiku, and what it would look like to have all the current resources were being poured solely into a 64-bit Haiku - would we notice or see a difference? All the source is available online, so I think that the few who want or need it, could make that happen on their own. That makes a 32-bit version difficult, but not impossible. I think what sets Haiku apart is its ability to run on very old hardware, but with the pace that technology develops at, are there really that many people interested in doing just that? I have what some may refer to as an "older" machine. It's a ThinkPad T480. It's a 64-bit machine. It runs Haiku well. But I'm imagining a world where, if development only resumed for 64-bit machines, perhaps we'd be seeing things like, "Better Network Card support", or "3D acceleration", or "Better Sound Card support"... That being said, I think if the few who remain who want 32-bit Haiku, that could lead to a fork, an I know the developers very strongly detest the idea of a Haiku fork. But I can see that happening. Along the same lines as "technology accelerates quickly" I think it's time Haiku starts looking forward more than it looks backward. To adopt more users, we need to stay current with the times and beyond. I already see a huge influx of interested users now that Firefox is becoming more and more stable for Haiku - that speaks volumes for what the masses want. As a daily user of Haiku, I can tell you I find Haiku to be more desirable the more it can do for me today, than for what it can do with vintage hardware and software. I want to be using Haiku 10 year from now, heck 30 years from now and I think that's going to take up almost all the resources Haiku has to accomplish this task. If you've read down this far, my last thought thus far is this: Haiku needs to focus WAY more on ARM architecture - I think the tech world is turning down this road at increasingly quicker speeds. My MacOS M2 machine is a marvel of power efficiency and speed. I think Haiku would benefit greatly to ramp up ARM support. (I was typing this last part as I was watching. I smiled when you started mentioning "ARM" and "Raspberry Pi") how neat would it be to manage GPIO of a Raspberry Pi from Haiku!?
The issue with the 32-bit version is the ancient compiler version used.
As I understand it. ARM is less unified than X86, so a Haiku compiled for Raspberry Pi needs to be recompiled once again to run on Apple Silicon. But Apple is going to maintain M1 compatibility for a long time yet, and most people don't change their OS until they absolutely have to ... unless it is a Raspberry Pi, where it is just a matter of changing the SD card and rebooting. That's why I think RPI is our best shot.
Whenever I go to Haiku Depot it only has like 4 or 5 things available even when I refresh the repos. At this point it's entirely unclear how to even download packages at all on this OS
That's weird, there should be hundreds. First, open a Terminal and try to refresh the repos from there: pkgman refresh. Keep an eye on any error messages. Now, use the command pkgman search -ua to list all uninstalled packages. That should be a long, long list. If that works out OK, start HaikuDepot and go to the menus. Under the Repositories menu, select All repositories. Under Show, make sure that Available packages is ticked. Finally, under the menus you will see two tabs. Select the All packages tab.
Thanks for the video. I installed a package using HaikuDepot, however it’s not listed under “Applications” in Deskbar… where do installed applications go that don’t get put in Applications in Deskbar?
First of all, have you also checked in Demos and Desktop Applets? There are a few apps that put a link in there. But there are a few apps where the developer did forget to place a menu link (looking at you, ReText!). You can find your program either in /boot/system/apps or /boot/system/bin. Then, create the directory /boot/home/config/non-packaged/data/deskbar/menu/Applications (that capital "A" is important!) and create a symlink to your program in it. It will then automagically appear in the desk bar menu.
Haiku has finally achieved feature parity with Windows 3.x in this regard, lovely
To see the effects of a ControlLook change you need to open a new app. There's one test app in the source with lots of controls, but the Playground demo is probably enough to have a glimpse.
a modern browser please..
Upgraded last night! Woohoo! Congrats Haiku!!
Hi, we fixed that crash (after I noticed it in your clip) in the main branch some days ago. 🙂
Thanks for the heads-up. I'll give it a mention in my next video (which will be early October according to the pipeline, sorry)
If you wish, add opening youtube and playing a video as part of the testing protocol for the browsers, that will give people an idea of the multimedia support
Have a look at episodes 80-90. I covered the TH-cam situation extensively there.
Do you plan to do another video going deeper? While pointing to the user guide is OK, I would have expected to at least show that queries are live here. Just creating a file on the desktop and pointing out how it magically appears in the results, or something in that line, to show this is something unique to Haiku and not just a GUI for a standard search.
Unique? Thirty years ago, perhaps. Today, I can replicate that "magic" on my MacOS desktop, even if it uses a completely different mechanism under the hood. We are still fixated on replicating BeOS, but other systems have caught up.
> I don't really need this audio visualizer You can select the widgets you want and clean up the view somewhat in the Widgets menu. And unlock the widgets so you can change the distribution. For VLC, what you tried the first time seems to be the right way. That is, just open network stream, paste the URL and play. Issue is the sample one does not exist anymore and VLC should at least show an error. And then if you try with one that exists you do get an error about not being able to unscramble or something. I guess it needs updating.
have you come across any word processors that allow you to create collapsable toggle items?
Not word processors, no. But there are a lot of folding text editors available. Just search for "folding" in HaikuDepot
