    Hi Peter. Quck question. I noticed when you switched on the auto choke and started the engine it was about 1000rpm. When I do the same on my 3.4 the revs are lower on auto choke. How can this be adjusted to raise it to the 1000 rpm. My engine sits fine after auto choke off at around 750rpm.. regards JMD

    • @peternedsmith
      @peternedsmith หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello, Something I havn't thought about, but when the choke is adjusted properly it lets enough air petrol mix in to get to 800/1000 revs, does yours start easily, and then bog down, as if it's getting too much petrol, that would slow it down, have you tried adjusting the mixture needle on the choke? the choke mixture should be adjusted with the engine hot, richen it (anti clockwise) till the engine starts to falter, and that's it, and see what it's like when cold, in any event I put a few revs on with the throttle and get the choke off as soon as possible, to prevent bore wash, and just warm up on the throttle, cheers PS

      @@peternedsmith Hi Peter, Yes It starts but then seems hesitate. I have seen the needle you mention with the lock nut etc... The car is wrapped up for winter but I have taken a note of what you mention. when hot turn needle clockwise until engine falters. Like you I normally only leave it on for a minute or two at most. I noticed when you were pulling the plugs to check mixture. Is that the way you would adjust each carb. weaken or enrichen based on a run with clean plugs etc... I bought one of those colortune and its a hit and a miss to be honest.. thanks James

    Hi Been enjoying your MK2 videos for quite awhile now. I have a question. Is iit posible to remove the gearbox on its own or does the engine / gearbox have to come out together.. thanks GN

    • @peternedsmith
      @peternedsmith หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello, yes it is possible, but whether it's worth it I don't know, to do it you would have to drop the back of the front axle down to let the engine drop enough for you to get the bell housing bolts out and get the bell housing to clear the body, Iv'e done it before many years ago, but I think taking the engine and box out in one lump, either from the top or the bottom would be easier. cheers PS

    When I started work it was at Mullards a TV company an my job was as an apprentice engineer, we had to file a block of steel within 2 thousands of an inch square (boring) and having just left school the last thing I wanted was more classroom lessons which we had, I got so bored I left and became an electrician, wish I had stuck it out but at 16 I was young and more classes didn't appeal at 5 pounds a week, as an apprentice electrician I got 11 pounds a week. There is something very satisfying watching work being created on a lathe, wish I had one. Time to get out a blow torch and melt the swarf back in to useful metal :)

    Did you use WD40 or similar to allow the screen to slid in easily ?, Have you used any sealant on the window seals ? On the seat base did you replace the broken springs ?, I had to replace a lot and purchased a used seat base to rob it of good spring s so if you need any let me know I have the base left and lots of springs.

    • @peternedsmith
      @peternedsmith 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Gary, used soapy water on the screens, no sealant on as yet, the rubbers were a good fit, so need to test with water first, fortunately on the seat base there were no broken springs, but it was a bit of a twat getting the vinyl clips back onto there original possition

    Thanks for the insight peter, ive got to take my front end apart this year, the subframe is off the car already. When ever i have had to deal with coil springs in the past, I've always use a ratchet strap as a safety tether. As in a worse case it would stop the spring flying out completley. I will be using the threaded bar method.... Fingers crossed!😊

    • @peternedsmith
      @peternedsmith ปีที่แล้ว

      Good luck with it, I had to take the offside one out again and shim it 3mm, stands OK now, not the sort of job you want to be doing more than once.

      I just dropped my front subframe and rebuilt the suspension. I used tge ratchet stap method when removing the spring, but on reinstalling it, I put the subframe back in first and used 4 threaded bars. I then jacked up the spring, tightening the nuts as I went until I could get the 2 bolts in where there was no threaded bar and replaced each stud with the bolt while still supporting the spring with the jack. Took about 1 1/2 hours a side.

  • @jagvette1
    @jagvette1 ปีที่แล้ว

    OK, TOO late now would it have been a good idea to drill a hole in the intake manifold put in a adapter and connect the pipe to it, which of course would have the advantage of not messing up the carbs with oily air, just a thought. Sure can tell you are an engineer Heath Robinson would be proud of you 🤣🤣🤣😁😁😁😘

    • @peternedsmith
      @peternedsmith ปีที่แล้ว

      Gary, I had thought of that, by fitting a PCV valve going direct to the manifold, but I didn't want anything that was going interfere with the carburation, or possibly cause a weak mixture if it failed, there is not much stuff comes out of that vent, but it does smell a lot Why make things easy, when you can do it the hard way. Cheers Heath.

  • @jagvette1
    @jagvette1 ปีที่แล้ว

    When I did my front springs, I used approximately 18 inches of stud in each of the boat holes with a spacer some washes and two nuts. Just removing one bolt at a time and replacing it with a stud, spacer and nuts probably could’ve got away with one nut, but I liked the extra safety that should the thread strip. There was a second nut there to hopefully prevent me getting a mouthful of spring Then reinstalling was a simple case of reversing the procedure . By the way, thoroughly enjoyed watching your videos and the detail you go into on your vehicle I try and do the same on mine

    • @peternedsmith
      @peternedsmith ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Gary, Yes a mouthful of spring is not recommended, fortunately I was far enough away to avoid any contact with it, but just laziness not fitting the guide pins to remove the spring, the other side worked a treat.

    • @peternedsmith
      @peternedsmith ปีที่แล้ว

      A lot of the time , the set up takes longer than the job, in the case of the above, the vice must be set square to the machine axis, the block in the vice was machined square on 4 sides, then drilled and tapped for the cover mounting studs, the dimension for the semicircle that had to be removed was taken from the old 3.4 rear cam bearing housing plus 0.010", and centered between the stud holes, then just a case of increasing the boring head to the desired diameter, the reliefs for the O rings were located from each stud hole individually and were not critical, I never show much of the setup because a lot of it is much of a similar thing every time, but the next vid of interest that I do, I will include it

      Hello Simon Where are you at now?? Yes it goes well with a bit of 30s music, had a lot of problems with the engine, unfortunately I got stuck in a 3 mile traffic jam one day, and it overheated, tried new head gaskets, but still the same, I ended up dropping a derated 350 chevy into it (just because it was available locally) but managed to get an adapter plate from the states, £110 which made it a bit easier, original clutch plate and release bearing, and a Bedford truck clutch cover, it all went together quite well, I altered nothing on the car, so it can go back to original if needed. With the V12 in I experimented a bit with the timing, and they run a lot better and cooler on todays fuel if the ignition is advanced 3 degrees from standard on the timing jig, it is easy enough to do if you have the timing jig, (it also does the V8s), I tried at 4 degrees but it sounded rougher.
