HARPSLINGER PODCAST EP#14 - CORKY SIEGEL
S.S. one of the most interesting and disciplined individuals you will ever meet.
Butterfield was an ear opener for me, but my first harp record - gifted by a friend - was John Mayall. Next Sonny Terry. After that more, more, more.
Nice interview. And how cool and rare to hear a bit of a Sonny Boy lesson.
That’s awesome. Yeah I’ll be working on that for like a decade. 😂
Good comment about Dylan. I’ve always liked him, but never went for his style. I concentrated on blues and Irish and such. These days, I love putting my harp on a rack and playing in a Dylan style. Also the comment about playing what people think of as harmonica is apt. Jason Ricci’s advice on busking is to play what people think a harp should sound like and develop an audience before you pull out the complex stuff.
I lived in Seattle in the late 90s. My uncle, his friend Keith, and I used to follow The Mark Dufresne Band around different places on the weekends. My uncle's health is declining and Keith passed a few years ago. The memories of that time and grooving to Mark and his bad live on.
The record store comments are right on. I clearly recall walking in the local store in the late 70s and hearing the fab thunderbirds Girls go wild. I took that home perusing lap bins was almost a hobby back then. Thanks for the mention of Pierre. I was in the Cambridge Harmonica Orchestra and Pierre was my first teacher. We had near 50 players in Boston for a recording session. I was ok-ish when I joined, I could play a lot better after.
Listening to one of these podcasts,I bought a marine band for the first time in years. I love the sound all over again.
I checked out some of Ron’s videos. His swingy, jazz stuff is fine. I think of the old DC band Power House and of Jerry Portnoy’s swing album. Ron is the smoothest.
I love the stuff Rachelle did with Will Wilde. Such a great musician she is. The comparison with judo is very good.
Phil Wiggins said he only lip purses (at least many years ago) though I expect anyone who does octaves and slaps must obviously use the tongue. Pierre Beauregard taught all tongue blocking. I find single note tongue blocking (isn’t that what the little Honer pamphlet that comes in the box shows?) - single note tongue blocking has helped me on fiddle tunes.
What a great and fun guy Rick is.
Shanty is great. Train of Glory is the one I started with. Another great interview with another great musician.
Will Wilde is fantastic and has some great YT lessons. And again, Jamey is a really good interviewer. It makes for a good conversation when the interviewer knows his stuff and plays great too. When I was in college, I took lessons from a guy in DC, Pierre Beauregard. After he found I could bend all degrees of draw and blow notes, he asked how I wanted to learn. He said he could teach me songs, like Roller Coaster and such if I wanted, or he could teach me the way he wanted. Happily, I went with his method and learned tongue blocking, arpeggios, and positions. We studied no actual songs, only techniques - and he gave me homework to listen to various players. I saved all his handwritten notes and his lessons kept unfolding in my experience for years.
Love to see Phil Wiggins interviewed, but I think this channel has stopped making videos. Jamey is a really good interviewer and there are more harp players to hear from.
Joe mentioned Jimmy Gordon. I went to high school with Jimmy. He got several of us interested in harmonica back then. I wonder if Joe ever worked with Pierre Beauregard, my first real teacher. He was way into tunings in the 70s.
When I started learning harp, Charlie was one of the first records I got along with Jonathan Edward’s, Sonny Terry and John Mayall. Great interview. Charlie is a legitimate legend.
I just met Deak last week, he is one good Dude! Had the time of my life in Clarksdale, thanks to Deak!
Definitely one of the coolest guys in the biz. Haven’t been to his shop in about 6 years. It’s an awesome place.
@@frothybeaver4869 Yes it is!
I admire your work on your channel and your playing. I’m a huge fan of Jason as a human being as well as a musician. He is always open and quick to praise others. That never diminishes a person, just raises them in my estimation.
I never listened to Willie a lot, but the first time I heard harmonica on one of his tunes, I had to check who was playing. Mickey really caught my attention. Nice interview.
Thanks for the content Jamey! I tend to enjoy your interviews a lot because you don't ask the same questions the same way every time. Keep up the good work!
Jerry is GOD!
My first lessons were in the early 70s in the DC area. I took lessons from Pierre Beauregard. Half of every lesson was theory - circle of fifths, modes, sympathetic reeds and bending. In the meantime, I played on,and Pierre’s lessons kept unfolding in my mind. His lessons lasted long after the actual lessons ended.
The issue of cultural appropriation is usually ridiculous. Without a sort of cultural appropriation, we’d all still be in our separate Stone Age tribes. If more blacks still listened to the blues, there might be more blacks involved in the superstructure of the blues music industry. Although, whites would still probably run most stuff - the US is, after all, an aristocracy.
I remember more than once sitting out on the roof at Bluffside Tavern, on the bluffs between Milstadt and Columbia Illinois, amoking a joint with Tim and Jim. He had a 58? Melody maker that he would burn up the fretboard on.
One of my mentors and favorite harp players on the planet. I wish he could make it back to IL again. Miss ya Deak . Jimmy long harp.
God what a player and a lovely person.
Wow! I come I missed this channel!??🎉
Great interview, Huey is a joy to listen to and a musical legend !!

I love the intro

It was so fkn brilliant the way Jerry described how he felt when given the opportunity to play with Muddy. His brilliant use of baseball oriented metaphors was pure genius.
This was one of the best interviews of a blues musician I've heard. You brought out the best in Rick Estrin.
Jerry is my favourite harp player.Legend! Long live Jerry.Pozdrav iz Srbije
I landed here, guys, after looking for jazz dance - and now I need a harp player. I also need to figure the notes I need to chicken-peck so I can quantize it (I can't whistle or sing or play) for the new songs ... and so this podcast provided more than just laughs and insight into the art. I've been offline a few years but I never really was exposed to the synergy a harp player can deliver (I remember Mr Bloe, is all). Your music and tones will be in my ears as I carry on writing (I have a shanty or two to finish) so you have made my day, guys. I enjoyed every moment.
The first song I learned note for note was Break Song on Siegel -Schwall’s first album, seems Ike lifetimes ago. Blows my mind that I’m still learning from Corky. Inspiring as ever. Thank you. 🎺
