Avid Pro Tools 2022.4 Artist/Studio/Flex - my reaction, it's bad
I think I've finally figured out why I think this pricing scheme is such an appalling sham on Avid's part.
1.) Avid transferred all the functionality that was in Pro Tools Ultimate and swept it into Pro Tools Studio and raised the subscription price from $199 a year to $299 a year. Just with one key difference - for that price you don't get to use HD Native/HDX hardware - it won't work with Studio, you need Ultimate. Let's say you buy HD Native/HDX hardware off someone used and think "oh well it must work with any Pro Tools software right? I mean, what company would disqualify their own hardware interfaces from a decade ago from their own software? Who would do that?" Avid would and did!
2.) If you don't own an Ultimate Perpetual license you're even more screwed because you'd pay a whopping and shocking $999 a year for Flex instead of $399 a year for basically the same software - more than double for basically the same thing. Yes I know they throw in extras like the so called "Inner Circle" but worthless to most of us.
3.) Avid has the gall to, on the one hand say "we're discontinuing perpetual licenses you'll need to go subscription" while in the other side of their mouth say "your dealers still have perpetual licenses left, act fast and buy them now before they're gone!" What kind of money grabbing, low class marketing is this? To me it's like saying to a child, I have two ice cream cones that are the same - you can pay more for a few licks or you can buy the whole cone for less than what the licks cost.
4.) The point has been made over and over at nauseum for years that Avid offers little to no new value to subscribers year after year, they just re-package and rename the same software. Boo! How kind of Avid to throw in Groovecell and Synthcell their first new plugins in 7 years (note: I'm not counting 304e and 304c which are simply the rebadged Joe Meek plugins) - it's a booby prize at best, more smoke and mirrors to gloss over the total lack of real features they've released to date.
I'm sorry. I love Pro Tools and have been a faithful customer for years. But this sucks and we shouldn't get handed a load of bull and call it sunshine.

_// Thanks for sharing the video! Let me tell you something important: God loves you! God loves us ! He is no respecter of persons! because God wants us all to be saved! and let's go to the knowledge of the “Truth” God wants to save us from eternal damnation, which we all deserve because of sin, who entered the world through Adam, and death entered through sin, and thus death passed to all human beings, Therefore, we are all “Sinners” But God's Love was so great for us, that he sent his only Son (Jesus Christ), gave him to this world, to die and rise for all of us! No Respect of Persons! so that everyone who believes in Jesus Christ does not go to eternal punishment, but rather has “Eternal Life!” “ Jesus Christ died for our sins, according to the Scriptures; and he was buried, and rose again on the third day, according to the Scriptures Jesus Christ came to call sinners to “Repentance! “ and, he who believes in Him, has “Eternal Life! “But whoever refuses to believe in Jesus Christ, the wrath of God remains on him. Then, as through Adam's transgression, condemnation came to all human beings, in the same way, through the justice of Jesus Christ, justification of life came to all human beings! All of us who believe in The Only Savior of the world! The Only Mediator between God and us! The Lord Jesus Christ! The son of God! All of us who trust in Him; we have “Eternal Life! “ And we must know that there is salvation in no one else; because there is no other name under heaven, given to human beings, in which we can be saved. Only by Believing/Trusting in “Jesus Christ” can we be Saved! But Jesus Christ also said: Not everyone who says to me, Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Therefore, we must be doers of the Word of God! and not only listeners and/or readers, deceiving ourselves. So let's read the Word of God! There is His Will! what God wants us to do! Let us read mainly the Gospels; Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, and let us pray to God, our Heavenly Father, all the days of the life that He gave us! God loves you! God loves us! To Him alone be the Glory Forever! Amen! Great job, Justin (and your singing is good) !! Thanks for all of the demos. You really went way beyond what most of us do, in presenting what these mics are all about. Here's a couple of links. If you want to hear what two mics sound like with EQ, here is the Behringer C1 and Audio-Technica AT2020. The Behringer has 3 sets of EQs that it is running through. The AT2020 has one set that it runs through, and it's bumped on the highs and lows. Here is the C1, first. th-cam.com/video/1qmpG38-v3I/w-d-xo.html Here is the AT2020 th-cam.com/video/_ab-x4gdQU8/w-d-xo.html

Or just the DLI? Would love to put my old interfaces to use here rather than just having them sit idle like a massive paperweight lol...

    • @Justin1524

Actually I sold all of it. I now use a a Mac Studio Ultra M1 loaded (5K new), a Presonus Quantum 4848 ($800 used) and a 112D MOTU ($800 used) interface with Core Audio (Pro Tools Aggregate) and I couldn't be happier with an insane amount of IO which mostly means I can have a lot plugged in with less unplugging in my small studio. No DSP because the Mac handles it pretty well. The idea of offloading Waves plugins was attractive to be but the software was too much of a pain-in-the-ass. If I had it to do over, I wouldn't. Folks who use this stuff, IMHO are mostly running live sound. Best of luck!

I have the perpetual license also And also started PTs pre millennium So I still own the old unsupported versions I have one machine that still runs m-powered 8, one machine running PTs 11 as the first 64 bit daw And the current 2022 version on my newest intel iMac 5k I do pay an annual fee but I see it as an upgrade fee and since I have access to the plug-in library, support and additional free software I don’t feel it’s that much money My system has yet to freeze or crash the way it used to since my newest iMac 5k But I guess you can make the same money grab argument about Apple both iphones and IMacs, MacBooks The monthly subscription is obviously the direction everyone company is head into, It’s just so profitable I also run Logic, Studio One 5 and Ableton at home But for work I can’t do without PTs So again the yearly roll over fee is just another cost of running a shop and not even close to some amounts I have to pay I guess the point is if your working it’s a non issue considering the ease of use and workflow speed that I’ve become accustomed too and yeah I’m still not seeing anything else anywhere I work coast to coast I think Studio One is the DAW that is targeting the home user it’s clever and fun but never felt quite “Pro” to me with the little plug-in icons and some of the gimmicky? functions Like extract chord, I mean who doesn’t know the chords of their own song? And it’s incorrect too often But drag and drop loopers with 0 music theory love it Or auto FX, VCA tracks For people who never constructed a simple chain, don’t know what the letters VCA stand for never saw a patch bay and don’t often use outboard gear Protools is Pro gear and still the industry standard today And that has value at least to me Just my opinion

I had to use pro tools for school projects in audio school and I have not opened the program a single time since my final test and I don’t plan on it. Imagine using 10 year old plug-ins and paying those cost when so many other audio company are crushing it out here.

Unfortunately every 5 or so years I hear people saying this about Protools (no innovation, high prices), and that they'll stop using it, and yet I feel like it has as many users as ever. Certainly for me, I use the software because it's what I know best, but it's frustrating that for me as someone who had an HD license, then upgraded it to an Ultimate license, I'm now stuck with the choice of the license becoming outdated or needing to essentially subscribe anyway to keep my license having any real resale value. I actually think that for many, the cost of the Studio is only justifiable if they would have had an Ultimate subscription before and now no longer need it. In short, they've just found a way to milk more money, and a lot of people are buying into it anyway. I certainly know a lot of people that don't need to have big-studio cross-compatibility (eg. for Film/Scoring work) who are using Cubase, Nuendo and Logic these days instead.

Hilarious, I was tryin to look into this... are schools going to start teaching on different DAW any time soon? Try Reaper.. we get an update every week. I have had 20 updates since november.. The creator of Reaper is a retired millionaire, programming is his passion. Trust me it is the best DAW, i have used Cubase, Ablteon, and i watched someone use pro tools and it hurt me to watch lol..Reaper has ppl who make 3rd party scripts constantly, there are ppl who are obsessed with it, we have so many little tools we can use.

Pro Tools is years behind the competition in features but appeals to many of us, in large part, because it's what we're so used to using for years and years. When you're paying a yearly subscription fee don't you think you deserve added value? Especially those who keep a perpetual license. Why should a company charge money again and again for bug fixes? It's not right.

My opinion:::: best sound for voice over - Rode tubes,, best for music is Samson- has some noise, but is most natural and realistic; noisiest is Behringer, overall any cheap mic on the list is worth having...CAD at $15 sounds better than Rode NT200 at $200. Mxl ribbon sounds worst; In general, the most expensive mics are for those with bad voices and ears, they cut out some harmonics to seem clearer to untrained ears that need to be given mildly amplified harmonics that say, "oh but that's crystal clear, it stands in the mix". And there's another reason why studios prefer very expensive microphones: their clients don't have gifted voices and expensive microphones must do just that, hide the flaws in the voice and simplify the harmonies of the instruments so that the client says, "oh, I like that...it sounds like a pro"...because corporations sell trics for senses, they sell what makes people more confident about themself.... Mr Justin, what is your choice, please?

i completely agree with what u have said. i was just about all in with pro tools....but. i have a reaper and studio one 5 pro license. unfortuneately studio one doesnt manage resources as well as pro tools. plugins can eat a lot more cpu....not a deal breaker tho. u can join sphere for 16 dollars a month and have everything presonus offers. every add on plugin all the notion stuff etc... thier are still alot of pro tools nobs out there. if u have always used pro tools then u dont really miss some of the features (ara, slip editing) that some other daws offer. its never been in your work flow so,,,,your use to not having it. its hard to see what avid is really saying to people with this. and the value for money debate is raging. i do like pro tools but..they keep pushing people. so how much deeper does the average independent studio want to go ? and as much as some people still want to turn thier nose up at reaper ....its affordable ,great communty they l;isten to thier user base...does avid really think they can continue to live on the industry standard moniker that no longer exist ??
