Forging a Francisca AXE out of Leaf Spring Part 2!
This is part two of our second axe!
Forging an AXE from a Semi Truck Leaf Spring - Part 1!
Our first axe gave up the ghost after splitting elm tree logs. It didn't help that we quenched it in water. As a result, it ended up with fractures throughout the high carbon bit. However, we were surprised how long it lasted. The handle broke first and then we used it as a splitting wedge. We used a 16 lb sledge hammer to pound it through logs and eventually part of the bit broke off. Now we a...
Cleaver vs Cow Femur!
My grandfather had an old cleaver hanging up in his kitchen. It was his grandfathers cleaver for processing pigs and cows. I don't know what happened to that old cleaver but we decided to make one in homage to it. We used and old heavy duty leaf spring, probably 5160 and the handle is made of desert iron wood. We intentionally left it with a brute de forge look so that it would look old and used.
Mounting Century-Old Anvils Part 2!
In the previous video, we demonstrated how to mount an anvil on a stump. In this video, we mounted them onto some tripods we made. Thanks for watching!
Rusty Railroad Spike to Steak Turner!

This is a great beginner project! It worked fantastic when we used it to barbecue with.
Mounting a Century-Old Anvil!
This is our most recent acquisition. A century-old, 130 lb. solid tool steel Columbian anvil made in Columbus, Ohio. It pairs nicely with the 125 lb, 100 year-old solid tool steel Swedish Soderfors anvil. Hope you enjoy the video!
Best Inexpensive Coal Forge!

The old coal forge died. So we built a new one. Inspired by the instructions found here: www.iforgeiron.com/topic/49764-the-55-forge-bottom-and-side-blast/

Making an Axe Out of Leaf Spring!
We have forged our first axe ever. We used hardware store mild steel, leaf spring for high carbon steel, borax, a simple forge, and sweat. If you have any suggestions on how to make this better, leave it down in the comments. Thanks for watching. #axe #axemaking #homemadeaxe #leafspringaxe
It would be great as a spatula so you can flip them without putting a hole in it.
Thanks for sharing, now im hungry haha flipper came out very nice 👍
Nice job!!! Forge On!!!
Thank you!
... good effort... but you ground down most of the edge and not actually forge it....😊
Very nice. Did you refine the tip any more after the forging filming stopped or is that the finished product? Thank you.
That is the finished project.
How does one forge weld steel without cleaning it. I have no problem welding clean steel but if I don't clean the scale off no amount of heat or hammering will weld them.
It's difficult, but if you have an oxygen free environment in the forge, you can do flux less forge welds. We did clean it but we didn't include that portion in the final video. Thanks for watching!
thats a nice steak turner. what type of meat was that? it looked GOOD!!!
Thanks! It's Mexican style grilled chicken!
I recently picked up a few railroad spikes to experiment with. With the first one I worked on, I found it to be very hard and labour intensive to move a bunch of metal. I annealed the second one and found it to be much more cooperative!
Awesome!
Dude I’m loving your video style. I recently started blacksmithing and have been making a lot of bottle openers. Got yourself a new subscriber now though
Thank you! Get ready for some more content!
All aboard!!
Choo Choo!
i liked the Heavy hammer for forging and the Light hammer for planishing. nicely done.
Thank you for noticing!

nice job.
Good stuff! How's it look now?
Great!
wow nice vid really getting better
Thanks!
Awesome job, i am just getting into forging this video sure will help me along. Merry Christmas
Happy holidays! Glad we could help!
hi, spring steel is hardened in oil, and tempered 180 - 220 C ( 1hour ) GOOD JOB :) NICE AXE
Thanks for the info! We appreciate it!
Isn't that the 1 inch plate I gave you?
Yes!
@@blackthistleforge that's ar m awesome I'm glad it got put to use
Good video!
Glad you enjoyed it
What's the purpose of bouncing the ball at the end??
Hi Steve, the purpose of bouncing the ball is to test the hardness of the anvil. The harder the anvil, the higher the steel ball will bounce. So in the video, you can see that between the two anvils the height of the ball stays relatively the same. This means both anvils are equivalent in hardness. Thanks for asking!
@@blackthistleforge useful info!!
First. Good video
Thanks!

Really good work you have there. The axe looks like it is from the !800's. If you have a reddit account then you should post it on your_homemade_weapon community. Here is the link: www.reddit.com/r/your_homemade_weapon/new/
Thanks! We really appreciate it!
keep up the good work.
