Absolutely love this. "Don't forget the f*ing kittens." 😆
Kittens are so essential @lockardlee 🤓
Such a great discussion! Thank you.
@@fullyhumanpsychology You are welcome; thanks for watching!
What a fantastic conversation............😊
It really was @lockardlee, partly due to you sharing your thoughts & insights!
"We come from our parents; we're not our parents." Right! :)
Damn right skippy, @lockardlee! 😉
💯- hit the mark! - 💯
Sure did, @lockardlee! 😀
Viewing this was yet another confirmation of the incredible knowledge shared with us - can't get that in a classroom! 😃
Yes, @lockardlee! In addition to traditional "above ground" university training, it's crucial to get the underground knowledge to fill in the gaps for therapists-in-training. 😉
Dr. Deussing: you put it all together so well - leading it, summarizing it, telling it from your lengthy experience, finding the missing research gaps, how the therapist can change by the therapy they do. All of it is fantastic. Thank you.
Anytime @lockardlee! We really got into a sweet spot with this video! 😄
God bless all of you for being healers and safe harbors for troubled souls. I hope you know that you're doing great work, but ultimately, you are HUMAN BEINGS. Do the best you can with the tools you have and then stop. We all have to do what we can to heal. As wonderful and necessary as you are, each person is, at the end of the day, responsible for their OWN healing. You encourage, guide, and facilitate the efforts. But you MUST take care that what you give is NOT your self. I've had a life of trauma, and for a little while I saw a therapist, but I knew in my heart that I had to do the work because there's only so many ways to share pain. I could see that by going over and over my trauma, I was stuck in it, yet I secretly kept hoping my therapist would make it all go away. Disappear . She could not. And I had to stop going to her with that expectation. On more than one occasion, I asked her to please give me tools so I could stop hurting and start healing, but she couldn't ( or wouldn't) and I left knowing it was up to me. Long story short, I have learned to live with this silent partner of trauma, and ways to quiet the sadness. I learned to face my fears and avoid certain people and situations. Idk, I'm just here to say thank you, and to let you know that the world may not always say it, but we all need healers. What you do is brave and makes a difference. If you can possibly separate your lives from your clients and leave them knowing you have given them a safe place to share the hurt, and also the tools to help themselves, then what more can ANY of us expect? You have your own equally important lives, worries, families, jobs, spouses, etc. to work around. Please don't take the weight of the world on your shoulders and end up sick from it! You are beautiful, kind, and empathetic souls that do your best for others. No one has the right to expect more, not even YOU. Wishing you love and peace and personal healing . 💗🙏💗
Thank you for your kind & heartwarming comment @shortmeister4321; you are appreciated! 💙
This has been a fascinating podcast thank you. It was also a catalyst to some healing in relation to being free to create. I've recently discovered IFS and have been using it successfully on myself. While watching this I noticed one of my protectors getting very active. Turns out she was protecting me from being hurt. The 7 year old who loved to draw and colour and paint more than anything and a time when my mother was so mean and took all the art materials away and instead had me doing spelling tests with her standing over me. I went through the IFS process of befriending her and we went to an art room where there were so many things and had lots of fun and then the protector was able to find a new role of encouraging her art and creativity. Wow. Thank you. And I love the idea of combining Art therapy with IFS. ❤
Your journey with & growth through IFS is absolutely remarkable @shelinahetherington4661! And you're very welcome; I'm so happy you got a lot out of this podcast. 😄

Wow, Dr. Christopher Deussing, DSW, LCSW, C-DBT, this discussion of Ellen L. Wright, Ph.D.'s presentation to Philadelphia School of Psychoanalysis was incredibly thoughtful, stimulating, and nuanced! As a modern analyst, I found it so encouraging to see that the concepts of transference and countertransference, as well as consciousness, and the work required by therapists to achieve it, continue to be taught and understood. As you so rightly point out, these ideas are often overlooked in graduate education, but are the bedrock of the therapeutic alliance. I'm absolutely thrilled that our Philadelphia School of Psychoanalysis' video series has been so well-utilized by your intern cohort and applaud you 👏 for connecting more modern day treatments such as DBT to the psychoanalytic foundation of interpersonal dynamics in the treatment room. Wonderful!
Thank you @philadelphiaschoolofpsych for all your kind words; they are much appreciated! In order for any paradigmatic shifts to occur, we need to fill in these ideological gaps left by traditional graduate education with the "underground" knowledge of psychology & psychotherapy. Your videos have been a wonderful resource of this underground knowledge, so please keep them coming! ❤
Yay, Beth Tyson for getting through corporate to the passionate work you do today! Thank you, Dr. D., as always. 💛
Before this interview I had NO idea that Beth started in corporate. Thank goodness she exited, because she is such an invaluable asset to our field today! 🙏
Wonderful video and a good lesson. I'm beginning the journey of becoming a therapist. That said, my own parts are yelling at me when I overthink/intellectualize what I'm learning, and at times when I do not trust the process. It does feel "really weird" and uncomfortable. In addition, conversations when holding meetings, being present with another person, knowing your own parts helps the relationship. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it @lockardlee & thank you for your kind words! "When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro", & it sounds like you're ready to turn pro! 👍
Dr. Deussing and the intern cohort, this was a wonderful discussion reminder of Nancy McWilliams' lecture at our institute in 2022. I think Dr. McWilliams' would be very pleased with the comments made by the interns. Also, it so encouraging to see that young people entering this field bring with them a high level of intellect and understanding of the nuances in the therapeutic and supervisory relationships. Thank you for sharing!
You're welcome @philadelphiaschoolofpsycho7294! Thank you for your kind words & we hope Dr. McWilliams is able to watch our discussion at some point! 😃
I'm sorry I missed this one - great video highlighting how amazing Dr. McWilliams is. I had no idea about the psychoanalyst process - post grad requirements, 300 analysis hours, group supervision, attending classes, etc. --- uh --- 🔥🔥🎆🎆 Thank you Integrative DBT & Psychotherapy!

I’m glad that people are finally discussing the interplay between Trauma and eating disorders. If your Trauma and eating disorder is deeply embedded into so many facets of your life. Then is it really even possible to ever recover? It feels like there’s just too many broken pieces to try to fix. It feels impossible.
Thanks for your comment Janelle. Instead of "recover", I find the term "integrate" more reasonable than striving for a full cure if the trauma & ED are deeply embedded. With that being said, with longer-term treatment, therapeutic community, & hope I've seen incredible progress & growth in cases that initially seemed hopeless & overwhelming.
Here's to acronyms! (Thank you, Marsha!) Great video - helpful in taking a deep dive into various modalities and integration into practice. Thank you.
Glad you got a lot out of this; Travis really articulated the idea of integration beautifully throughout the video. 👍 More alphabet soup please! 😃
Here come the tears. Thank you, Dr. D.
Tears are good. Even allow yourself to weep. You're very welcome.
Fear, division and dopamine = distraction: Dividing us conquers. Fear controls. Dopamine supports distraction as we seek more of the "good stuff" that makes us feel better. We don't "have enough time" due to distraction. Distraction has evolved into a fear-based-hyper-aware feeding frenzy supporting 24/7 consumerism, global news, and anything else providing pleasure (tech or whatever) that redirects us away from noble truths. The dilemma of not having "quality time" is evident from traveling down this rabbit hole. Our society (and billboards!) caters to the lizard brain, supports our addiction to dopamine, and so on. In addition, regarding "advertisements," Microsoft supports keylogger software, Alexa listening and tagging key words for advertisements, the Windows OS new release will have a complete system monitoring option (similar to mirroring everything you do), etc. Go into your advanced Windows settings and you will see all of the software that can expose your microphone, your apps, your search engine(s), what you work on, etc. Turning it off is usually not an easy option, as it controls other functions. There's no choice, there's no privacy. It's all a mess in my opinion. Thank you for this incredible thought-provoking video. Much love and respect from JF. 😉💥🤘
You're welcome JF, as always I appreciate you & your kind words! I also love your rant; I think it deserves its own video! 😉
@@DR.DEUSSING 😆
Not remembering the trauma could also be a good thing, because it allows you to lay down new tracks on a new foundation that you can build with honesty & love, & that will guide you with the understanding on how to move forward with life, because you want to move forward and not look back, It's like starting over 🙏
Well said! You're absolutely right, it's amazing how our brain can protect ourselves from traumas by not remembering. Thanks for your comment.

Hey Dr. D! Thank you for sharing your thoughts about mental health experiences and needs, especially for men.
Hey Gwenn; I'm so happy you're enjoying them! Thanks so much for the positive feedback ... it helps keep me motivated to keep creating!
Fantastic video. I've seen a shift lately and I hope it continues - it's as simple as providing men support, being present-listening, affirming that "It's ok to cry, to need someone to talk to," etc. - or just "someone to trust." I hope society moves away from "men vs women." We've got some work to do with women too - shift the societal mindset of, "if you're not wealthy, macho, and you don't have 6-pack abs, I don't want you. You treat me like a queen and nothing less." What's that about..........
Thank you; I'm so happy you found this video fantastic! You're absolutely right, hopefully we can move away from the exclusionary dynamic of "men vs. women" to an inclusive one of "men AND women." I'm glad you're seeing a shift lately and hope that it continues.🤞

I’m glad that therapy gets this notion that it works fast was brought up. And I just don’t believe it works like that all the time. I wish that many understood the way therapy works. Also wanting and accepting change is crucial for therapy to work or to be received well. Coming from having over 2 years (and going!) of therapy.
There are many misconceptions about how therapy works, especially in this age of instant gratification. Of course there are instances that significant change can occur in a few sessions, but for the most part, therapy takes time ... and is a commitment. Glad you enjoyed this video & thanks for sharing your insights Emily!

Thanks for this lovely exposition of one of my favorite books. While I hear your point on “Mind Over Matter”, I do believe that unless you feel safe in your body and are able to govern your mind by feeling your feelings in your body, it is hard to develop mental resilience.
