Welcome to Unboxing Betty! I'm Melinda and I'm cooking my way through Betty Crocker's 1971 Recipe Card Library.
I'm fascinated by the influence of food corporations on American culture. This library is a treasure trove of mid-century delights, featuring astonishing ingredient combinations and eye-catching presentations. From tomato aspic and Chiffon cakes to deviled ham snacks and jello molds, I am thrilled to explore these forgotten atomic-age dishes that have fallen out of fashion, while educating viewers on the historical impact of food corporations like General Mills on the broader American food culture. By fearlessly embracing experimentation and sharing my own culinary triumphs and mishaps, I engage viewers in a journey that examines how consumer food brands have shaped the way we cook - both nationally and within our individual family and community traditions.

This New Girl?
If it wasn't for the fact I grew up eating this, I would never want to make this after watching her presentation. With her whiny comments and twisted facial expressions, she would turn viewers off from making this. Not everyone will enjoy every recipe, but honestly just because she doesn't like it, why turn off the viewers for actually wanting to try it out. My mother would make this to stretch her grocery money and we all enjoyed it. I am not a spam lover, but did enjoy it in this casserole.
They seem like a lot of effort tbh but yours do look cute x
Merry Christmas

Super fun as always. A very merry Christmas to you !
Just watched the stained glass cookie recipe, and I ended up here. 🙂 These look GREAT and I'll totally make these!!!
Thanks for posting on Christmas Eve 😊 I love listening to you while wrapping gifts 🎁
If you cut colored strips with a pizza cutter, then put the strips together and cut them with the same cutter you’ll have tight strips quickly. This was super fun and christmasy! Thank you for all your work! Happy Christmas! 🙂🎄✨
Hey if betty wanted better cookies Betty should’ve given more instructions you did great!
When I was a kid, my mother made these cookies a couple of times. I’m with you, they’re fairly blah. I made the kind where you melt the candy in the middle years ago when I was in high school, and my mother also used to make another kind called stained glass cookies. These were refrigerator cookies that involved mixing chocolate with the colored marshmallows they used to sell, rolling it into a log, refrigerating, and slicing it. I thought those marshmallows were nasty, so I didn’t like those, either, but she’d eat them by the carload.
Thank you for finding this long lost family recipe of mine. My mother made this all the time. She used chopped walnuts for the topping. ❤ I also let the pastry form the film on the pot and it did puff while baking. It was airy and gummy in some spots but all in all the same as I remembered.
Nothing about this addresses the question of hot or cold
Jubilee Jubilee!! ♥️
Ooh boy that sounds good
Just bought the 1971 box set. Then found your channel. Now I need the 1976 box!! Which one is better?
The walnuts moved because of the way you spread it with the spatula
Eating sour cream or crème fraîche with a rich cake like a chocolate cake is a very normal thing :-). I have eaten that often. I think it is a European thing though I am here in Australia.
Cake mixes are smaller than they used to be. This could be a factor.
Chocolate cake not ruined it looks like :)
Yes it’s chocolate devil’s food cake!
It looks like a great show! I wish I didn't live across the country, so I could see it!
Now eggs are 5$ a dozen, people want to know, will they pls add the egg back into the mix, I have no need to crack eggs!
Bad video
Now people think making a mix is home made. And that it's a lot of work. Back then, they felt guilty it was so little work.
This looks delicious. I love canned cranberry sauce. And lighting it on fire is the icing on the cake!
As someone who recently started using sugar cubes for tea because of their convenience, I'm guessing the box opens on the front. They have a cutout so you can take the cubes out and close it back. Great video!
Sour cream is commonly used in pies and Taco Bell used to put a dollop of sour cream on the apple pie filling they topped crispas with. I wonder if the pineapple was in a syrup if it would have worked better
We all together chant in unison “jubilee jubilee jubilee!” And dance around the flaming sugar cubes. 😂
😂
I was expecting one red spoon :-)
🧀🧀🧀
I also remember the chicken spread, corned beef, and liverwurst. I had no idea until recently there was a roast beef spread!
I can see why they got rid of the original devil label. That thing looked Satanic!
Welp, time to watch every single one of your vids.
I cut mine is tiny 1 to 2 inch squares.... less waste too.
Inspiring to try this. It definitely takes a certain level of skill to even want to attempt a souffle. Bravo!
Where is the recipe
A little Less word salad too. Otherwise ok
If you were little more serious, you'd be more interesting
Is that a metal egg whisk in a teflon?!
Yummy Yummy Cheese Souffle | Vintage Betty Crocker Thank you very much for sharing this recipes, Sister regards
This one seems really cool! Watching you create the tin foil monstrosity was daunting for sure but it is one of the recipes so far that I’m actually curious about and would potentially make one day
Don’t reply to any of these comments until you’re down on your luck and are sleep deprived.
Actually attempting a souflet is kinda brave. I've yet to cross that line
I like the part where the sauce became sentient. All it needed the remainder of the clip was really emotional support. 👏👏👏
Ooh, my family makes a dish called "Baked Cheese Sandwich" which is basically a savory bread pudding, and is really good and easy to make. Sounds like the texture and flavor would be pretty similar to your souffle. That's such a bummer that it stuck to the foil! Oh well, I agree that it was a win, I mean it still looked and tasted good even after it deflated!
Peanus
Peanuts 🥜
I really love this series! I have yet to be brave enough to try a soufflé but this makes me want to!
Thank you for having this up, I lost the copy of my recipe and it’s been over five years since I made it.
