Doing my dana 35 in my yj tomorrow
Want to do it again? I have one and I need to put my new 4x4 trans in it. It’s already axle swapped. Pm me if you’d like to help?
Great job dude I loved all the instruction you gave along the way. I want to do this to my 1993 Wrangler; I am not sure how I determine if it needs to be shimmed or how much it needs on either side. Great job and thank you!!!!
@@msc1064 th-cam.com/users/live2UkWl4xMigQ?si=UiVKG3bp2eQF6QW9
@@msc1064Thanks for watching... This is an indepth detailed video. Its long but goes deep into setting up a diff. It will be the same as a D35.
Great video, next time take the car for a rip to show how well the Yukon branded posi works!
@@rcf8367 Well that would be a blast to smoke some tires, but there is a break in period then a fresh oil change the let her fly. Thanks for watching.
While the way you removed the carrier bearing with the clamshell puller worked, it's supposed to be done with the race on top and both round adjusting discs inside the clam. That way should allow it to be removed without damage and be reused, if needed. There are some YT vids showing this. Cheers
@@Spikasaurus It works fine either way. The bearings dont get damage. Thanks for watching !
This is hands down the most comprehensive Dana 35 video. Great job
@@redneckchemtech7621 Thank you, glad you enjoyed it !
Great video however it seems like you are a very reckless worker. You tend to use brute force or brawn over strategy. Just try to be extra carecul
@@kevinmakelane123 Cherokees need to be slapped around. They get a little outta line sometimes. I will continue to do it the way I do it. I dont have time to dilly dally with strategies. Thanks for watching though.
I just want to say THANKS. I am a mechanic of 30+ years. I have stayed away from differential rebuilds and regear axles. But I didn't want to pay someone for the labor on a regear for my jeep Wrangler. You made it simple, and easy to follow. I am a new subscriber.
Good job..
I am a newby to this but I'm very mechanically savvy and wondering what size tools being used to seating bearings and such?... Looks like a red tool of some sort.
When you say "seat the bearings" Which bearings the carrier or pinion? I may have to review the vid.
He lost his finger doing his last 4 wheel drive conversion
I have done a dana30 many times,it is the same.
I very seldom see it done correctly, very nice,I've done quite a few, that axel is good for a lifetime of highway use
Thank you. The best video Ive seen on youtube. Excellent work.
thank you very much.
So I just bookmarked the link to this as "Best Dana 35 Video Ever." I have one from 89 (non-C-clip) in my MJ project, and I'll probably keep it for some time. Same deal to go any higher, as my carrier is at the limit with 3.55s.
Thanks for watching, I hope it helps you out.
Excellent video, super in-depth, the best I've seen on TH-cam for the GM 12 bolts. I'm going to do a new posi carrier in my old 56 Chevy pick up tomorrow, haven't done one in about 10 years so I'm glad I found this video because I definitely forgot a few things that I just relearned and I definitely picked up some new tips and tricks. Thanks again for the great video
Im glad you enjoyed the vid. Good luck on the 12 bolt. When I do anothe 12 bolt I will be using the crush sleeve eliminator kit. Im getting too old to crush those things...lol
@@missingdigitgarage8644that's what I'm using on this build, a little more messing around with the shims but in case I get a leaky pinion seal in the future. Do you think I'd be safe setting my pinion preload shims for the solid sleeve using the setup bearings?
If your set up bearings are in good shape and possible same brand as whats going to be used, you'll be fine.
Do I need to change the transmission on my Cherokee XJ 4x2?
That is how I did it. I changed the transmission
Mose definitely only way
As soon as you put the heat gun into the cardboard box to heat the ring gear and then closed the box, l knew everything l needed to know about your knowledge of the subject. You really shouldn't be making videos to teach anyone anything. You should be in a classroom learning. Good luck with your repairs.
Why don’t you make a video teaching then? Or are you just some bum on TH-cam that don’t know what they are talking about 🤡
Thanks for watching, why does the heat gun turn you off ? Ive done many ring gears over the years this way and never a problem at all. Those gearsets are still going strong for years. If your so good at gearsets, then why are you watching my videos ?
Thats what I thought, nothing to back up the comment.
Do u have a video on the dana 30 also
I have a front dana 44 reseal vid that is very similar to the dana 30. The steps are the same on both front diffs.
How do u get your set up bearings on and off so easily? Im about todo this exact job next weekend
I open up the inner diameter with a flapper sanding wheel. I believe I show how to do it on the GM 12 bolt regear vid. I hope this helps.
Nice work and video
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it.
VERY INFORMATIVE. GOT 1 QUESTION, ADJUSTMENT IS EVERYTHING,,,,SINCE YOU USED THOSE OLD TRY ON BEARINGS TO DO THE PINION ADJUSTMENT,..WOULDNT PUTTING THE NEW ONES ON CHANGE YOUR ADJUSTMENTS,.. SPECIALLY THE INNER PINION BEARING. THANKS
It all boils down to a good contact paint pattern. Changing setup bearings has little effect on measurements. It does have some but an acceptable paint pattern is the last and end result you want.
@@miguelmaldonado9881 Sorry for the late reply, there would be a slight change in measurements with old bearings. These bearings were in great shape so I was confident It would work. Thanks for watching !
Thanks for your time and hard work. Best video I've seen yet
@@miguelmaldonado9881 They get you close enough to go for a paint pattern. The paint tells all. It does work in a pinch. It is best to use new setups but not a rule.
How did you determine preload on the axle carrier bearings. Just rolling force/drag
I do the carrier bearing preload by feel. It takes a small struggle to get the carrier in. The dead blow hammer is your friend during install. There is a method using the inch pound torque wrench and a little math but I perfer the "feel the resistance" way. I hope this helps and thanks for watching.
Where are you at in Arizona? Im in Phoenix. I have had the 12 bolt in the chevelle rebuild 3 times by two shops and the gears still whine. I dont blame the shops as much as I blame Yukon for their crap quality these days. A lot of people have had trouble with their gears lately. I might bring my Chevelle to you for a ring and pinion swap.
Im in wellton just east of yuma. I wonder what their paint pattern looked like.
@@missingdigitgarage8644 they were both very reputable shops in Phoenix. I've found many other people that have the same exact problem as I do and the common denominator is Yukon.
Im east of yuma 25mi in a town called wellton
Next time i do a 12 bolt i will go with a crush sleeve delete. its a bitch crushing those things. a true shoulder destroyer
Ty for saying that " pitman arm , you have to shock it while pulling " you would think its common sense but seen so many vids of guys not doing it lol
Glad to help. Theres many ways to get the job done
I'm totally shocked you don't have more subs .... whats wrong with people , this is what ive been looking for ty
Glad you liked it. Thanks
Ty , did you drill out main leaf to 5/8th ?
no I left it as is
Those lines on the inner bearing at 23:59 could be caused by the inner bearing spinning on the pinion journal because of not enough interference fit. I would measure the pinion journal diameter to see if it's worn.
The pinoin was in spec. No evidence of a spin on the pinion. There was so much wrong with the previous setup throughout that nothing surprises me anymore.
How did you get the pattern read the first time? Did you use the old Pinion before removal?
I installed the new ring and pinion before paint and I get the specs close and go for a pattern read.
Love the video! I have also taken to wrenching Jeeps in retirement. One huge suggestion for you is to ditch the factory linkage bracket for the transfer case. Azzy's and other knock off companies make a great linkage system that bolts on the the trans/TC so it is much more stable, etc.
Ive seen that linkage, it looks like it would work nice.
Hi Tom!
Hey buddy, welcome aboard !
I always found it weird that the truck 12 bolt was actually weaker than the car 12 bolt.
Amazing talent. Damn shame you can't paint or ride a 3 wheeler.
Hahahaha , you are correct...who might this be ?
BRO HOW DID YOU BY PASS THE ANTI THEFT SYSTEM?!?!? MY 1998 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE LAREDO 4.0 V6 STARTS SOME TIMES THEN IT DOESN'T HELLP ANYONE?!?! Ive tried everything ive seen on TH-cam Nothing has Worked!
I didnt bypass nothing.
The ZJ has more bells and whistles. The XJ is much simpler. Good luck with soultion, I hope you get her running.
research installing a computer from a 4x4 zj. that may be the problem. I dont know for sure, but it could have something to do with it
Hope that thumb healed up! That was a (Un)lucky shot!
It got me good. All healed up now.
I'm in beautiful Strawberry, AZ! About to do the same thing. Thx for the videos!
How much are you going to sell for?!
Im new to az, ive been here 5 yrs now. Never heard of your town before. Im in wellton a small farming town east of yuma on the interstate 8. If you need any advice on the conversion just reach out and if I know the answer I will surely let you know. Good luck on it and shoot me some pics of it when its done. Cheers and keep on jeeping.
Oh ...as for a price on the sale...Im not sure yet. Im gonna do some cosmedic improvements still. Maybe 6k
Your work is beautiful. I'm sloppy. End up getting frustrated sometimes so I walk away and forget what's disconnected. I'm so brand new to the mechanic's world. But I do all the work on my XJ. Gotta send you a picture. Mine is quite unique.
How many short trips ? 3 times a day,for how many days.how long to cool?
Keep it slow for about 100 miles. Short trips a few miles at a time. Go inside and shop and drive it again. Fresh oil at 500 miles
How much does a job like this usually cost?
You could easely put 2k plus in a rear end with parts and labor
@@missingdigitgarage8644 thanks
Yes I live in northern California parts and labor 2200 .
Love watching your video
Great video. I'm an old car and heavy truck technician and would just like to point out the two holes on each side of the carrier opening that are kind of filled in with dirt. There is actually a tool that uses these holes to spread the case a little bit to help to make it easier to install the caps and shims. I do like the tool that you made from wood and it seemed to work great. This is just FYI.
Yes I am aware of a case spreader. You can get through the job without one. I dont even own one but I always get to my goal. Thank you for watching and commenting, have a great day and good luck on your project. Cheers.
Where are you from
Im located in southwest Az
That is SO helpful.
Glad you enjoyed it.
Good stuff man keep it up I'm about to mess with some front suspension and hubs will keep this in mind!!
Im glad you liked the video and good luck on your project. Cheers!
Best video on TH-cam, wish you lived in Williams az. I would have you do mine.
I was just in Williams last week scouting Elk. 1st time up there, beautiful. Glad you enjoyed the video.
Great work. Getting harder to find competent diff mechanics.
Thank you, glad you like the video
Nice!
How to you pull the old bearings off the carrier
Watch my other video called "GM 12 bolt " I cover the removal of the bearings. The video you watched was a new carrier so I didnt have to remove the bearings. I hope the video helps. Thanks for watching
@@missingdigitgarage8644 thanks. My carrier was really tight. Had to use a puller. I think there was too much backlash too. Guess I need a shim kit. The bearings all seem ok but was making a whirring noise under acceleration. Could that be from the bad install? It just had one thick shim on each side.
@@guymanicone7921 1 thick shim on each side is a factory custom shim pack. The noise you are hearing could be your pinion bearings. They may need to be changed. They are usually the first to start failing
Winner winner. Got the pinion bearing out today. That was the one. Great video, I'm going to use your procedure to set the shims. Ordered a kit today.
I dont think the cap bolts are suppose to get locktight.
Why is that ? What could the downside of loctite be ?
@@missingdigitgarage8644 I was just reading the book and the only place that gets loctite was the flange on the axle shaft tube where the breaks bolt on. I guess a downside is that if someone else services it they wont know it's on there and wont know to use a torch to soften the locktite but if you use the purple locktite it might not be as hard to remove. But now I would have to watch it again to see what color you did use cuz I forgot already.
@@hikerJohn So "The Book" didnt mention that Loctite is used on the ring gear also and the pinion nut? Install kits come with loctite provided in the package. The cap bolts are so strong that any impact or good size ratchet or breaker bar will easily free up the cap bolts even when red loctite is used. Thanks for watching and reaching out. Cheers
Hey brotha. I’m digging your videos. Lots of helpful info. I’m about to embark on my Dana 35 rebuild on my yj and I appreciate your videos. I work at a jeep deal here in AZ. I’d like to help you with anything parts and info and return the favor. Message me if you need anything or if you’d like to go wheeling I’m in.
Im glad you enjoyed the vids and thank you very much. I love to go wheeling often. What part of az are you in ?
Great informtion and step by guide to do this, much appreciated! I'm putting an older original set of 3.31 gears into my 71 chevelle 12 bolt with the same posi unit from Yukon. I saw that you used a thirty thousandths shim on the pinion as a staring point for the pinion depth since the older GM pinions don't have a number on the gear itself to shoot for for the measured depth. Would that also be a good place to start with setting mine up? I did the same thing and made a setup bearing from the old ones so I could easily change them as the shims need to be adjusted. Also what do you think about the crush sleeve eliminator vs. the old school crush sleeve? I thoroughly enjoyed your video thanks so much for sharing this with everybody, you make it look so easy, but I know that's because you know what you're doing lol! Thanks! John L
Do the crush eliminator, Its a struggle to crush those things. Especially if its under the car on jack stands. You can use the original shim thickness as a start point if it was set up correctly. If it was not set up correctly, you can use my numbers for the pinion start point and go where the paint markings tell you. Good luck and thanks for watching, Im glad you enjoyed the vid.
That watt it be MR.D awesome video keep on Jeepn. J.O
