Benign transposition is a teleport ability from the conjuration wizard.
Can't Light Clerics cast Fireball?
I have never played DND before and I think it was hilarious how many I was able to guess.
Ahhh I forgot that demi liches are just a skull! And the sneak attack is only not possible because they're not accounting for subclass features.
Umm actually pit fiends are resistant to nonmagical damage BUT monster manual says "Nonmagical Attacks that aren't Silvered"
The Pit Fiend used a spell and then attacked in the same turn, pretty sure it can't do that. It could maybe use a Legendary Action but he can't use those on his own turn.
I would have given a half point for the thing Matt found that was not accounted for! 🤣
Everything I found wrong with the comic, because I can -Pit fiend is wielding a morning star, when in the stat block and artwork it uses a mace -Demi lich is a skull, not the entire body -That isn’t just a normal lich, as it seems to be acerak or even a fan of his. -Dodge is not a reaction -You cannot take a reaction unless something happens -Attack of opportunity only works when leaving melee range not when entering -Silvered Weapons do in fact work on a pit fiend -Pit fiend shouldn’t roll iniative now, it’s mid combat -Also, assuming it’s already used it’s action with the attack of opportunity, it shouldn’t be able to cast hold monster or even attack the dwarf -Bit of a nitpick, but the Goliath is paralyzed and not just held in place -Grummush is not a god of the forge, or even a dwarven god -Fireball is third level, not second so you can’t use a second level spell slot -pit fiend is immune to fire damage, so fireball would do Jack -Clerics cannot learn fireball -Benign transposition allows you to teleport, not cast a spell -Invisibility is a touch spell -Potions in raw require an action, and you can’t take two actions in a turn -Howl is an AOE, so it auto hits stuff in the radius -Invisiblity makes it harder to hit you, and not dodge damage -Legendary Actions cannot be used on your turn, only on the end of enemy’s turns -Vile Curse is a WISDOM save not charisma -I’m pretty sure you can only use one legendary action at the end of a turn but I could be wrong -Jump is not a skill, it is a type of action -Nat 30 is not a possible roll, since deduocecohedrons are used -I don’t think you can jump 30 feet straight up unless under the effects of a jump spell or something similar. -Sneak attack would not apply here unless she is a swashbuckler -Turn Undead does not destroy undead, nor can it be used as a bonus action, NOR is it a route feature
As someone with a very, very basic knowledge of DnD, I got two of these (Nat 30, initiative roll during combat), plus two gut instinct guesses (pit fiend immune to fire, charisma saving throw).
Matt rolling a natural 30 at rules lawyering.
But don’t light clerics learn fireball at 5th level?
yeah, but since they didn't specify that the cleric was a light cleric we don't need to take that into account
I'm probably way off on this, but something nobody talked about, not even Matt, was the "Dodge reaction." Dodge is an action, not a reaction.
I thought you could have a possible opportunity attack toward a creature two sizes below your own when it enters your melee range?
2:18 I haven’t seen anyone point out that Matt is actually wrong here. Based on D&D Beyond today (9 Sept 2023). The Pit Fiend is immune to Fire and Poison. They are RESISTANT to “Cold; Bludgeoning, Piercing, and Slashing from Nonmagical Attacks that aren’t SILVERED”. So a silvered axe would do full damage, even a mundane steel axe would simply do half damage. Normally I wouldn’t point that sort of thing out. But that’s the big flourish of the video, finding a mistake that Brennan didn’t intend. I wonder what’s happening here. Did Matt used to be right? If so when did it change? Was Brennan just running with it? I don’t think that makes sense, Brennan wasn’t being a DM here he was being a writer / fact checker on Um Actually, the most pedantic show in existence. Can anybody help? Have the Pit Fiend stats changed or is there another explanation?
I’m also confused as to why the elf started the encounter by drinking a potion of healing when, to our knowledge, she was not injured and therefore should be at full hit points.
I think light clerics can cast fireball
BASED CHADS LEGENDS ALL
He missed a few, too. Here are the ones I picked out: 1: The Pit Fiend used two actions in a single turn by casting Hold Monster and then making its Multiattack. 2 and 3: Benign Transposition and Invisibility in the same turn. Both are actions, so that's mistake 1, and mistake 2 is that you can't cast two leveled spells in the same turn regardless of their action type. 4: A monster can't use multiple Legendary Action abilities on the same initiative count. 5: Vile Curse costs three Legendary Actions, so there would be none left over for movement. 6: The Demilich moves up to half its movement as a legendary action, so 30' is too far. 7: Under normal circumstances, vertical jump height maxes out at 8', subject to your character's strength. It says that the DM might allow a roll to go higher, but even then 30' is iffy without a Jump spell. 8: Demiliches have Turn Immunity, meaning that even if all the other stuff he mentioned wasn't true, Turn Undead still wouldn't affect it. And, optionally, 9: Demiliches have Legendary Resistance, so presumably it would choose to succeed if it was being subjected to any effect that would destroy it instantly. Not technically a rules error, but certainly a slip-up on behalf of the DM who just let a high-level enemy go out like a chump when it had an ability that could prevent it.
MATT
pit fiend has no immunity or resistance to silver weapons🤓
As someone that came into this about a year and a half ago without knowing anything about D&D, I'm so excited that I recognized even 6 or 7 mistakes in the panels.
Um actually pit fiends are resistant (not immune) to bludgeoning, piercing and slashing from nonmagical attacks that are not silvered; the silvered axe is silvered and the pit fiend is therefore not resistant to the attack, though even if the axe had not been silvered the pit fiend would still take half of the normal damage.
I'm pretty sure a silvered weapon does work against a pit fiend at least when reading the description of the pit fiend. Am I wrong?
Okay so I’m assuming this Cleric wasn’t light domain (light domains get fireball)
I knew there was a reason I avoided watching Um, Actually and this really made it clear. This entire segment is pure gibberish to me. Sure, all apart I could deduce what any of these words mean but I have never heard any of these terms in the same sentence and this is just extremely overwhelming. I'm a little envious of anyone who knows what they're saying.
Pit Fiends are not IMMUNE to non magical damage, they're resistant.
Hehe, Matt's silver axe is actually wrong in the matter of, that it will affect pit fiend since, silvered weapons does not make them magical but some enemies pit fiend for example does not have resistance for silvered weapons
Silvered weapons damage devils. Matt made a mistake.
Matt was WRONG on the potion. Drinking one yourself is a bonus action
Nope, officially it is an action. Bonus action potions are just a very common houserule
3:23, And for a 21st, even if a player has the jump SPELL active, the most they could ever jump vertically is 24 feet.
I hate to rain on Matt's parade but pit fiends are resistant to non-magical weapon damage that is not silvered, they are not immune to that type of damage. Source: Monster manual page 77
Another thing is the pit fiend casting a spell and then taking its multiattack. It doesn't have legendary actions and doesn't have a feature to let it cast spells before using multiattack.
Late to the party here, but Matt is actually incorrect about the Pit Fiend not being affected by the silvered axe. A Pit Fiend has damage resistance to "nonmagical attacks not made with silvered weapons". Since it's a silvered weapon, it takes regular damage.
MORE ERRORS FROM RESEARCH! -The Howl "attack" is an AOE, not targeted. So it wouldn't be directed at Una as implied here. -The Demilich used 4 Legendary Actions in one turn cycle when it only has 3 (Vile Curse costs 3 actions) -Benign Transposition is Misty Step as an action, and doesn't allow the user to cast a spell. -Even if the Demilich did fail its save against Turn Undead, it's immune to effects that turn. -In order for the rogue to jump 30 feet in the air, it would need a Strength modifier of +27, or a Strength score of 64 or 65. The cap is 30, therefore it is impossible for a halfling to jump this high without spells or magic items. Situational errors: -Elbratha as a Fighter would almost certainly have Indomitable, allowing them to reroll the saving throw against Hold Monster. It is possible this ability has already been used, or was used and failed again. -The Fighter had to have done almost 300 damage to the Pit Fiend in one turn since the Cleric "killed" it. Yes, they have 8 attacks with Action Surge (potentially 9 with a Haste spell), but all with a one-handed, assumably normal silvered axe as shown in panel 2. Maximum damage from a 30 STR Fighter's (non-versatile) battleaxe is 208 or 234 with Haste. Doing it 2 handed would do 240 or 270 maximum. Only a greataxe can technically one-round, but requires astronomical odds. While 208 is a lot, it is not enough to where any level of Fireball would kill the Pit Fiend if it could be affected. -Why did the wizard cast invisibility against 2 monsters with truesight? Seems weird, but possible the party did not know this. Error from Matt: -Turns out pit fiends are normally effected by non-magic silvered weapons
Whats even better is Matt knowing all the rules but he is also a huge fan of the rule of cool
Um, Actually... Demiliches aren't necessarily just floating skulls; there's even established lore with one demilich being a floating ribcage. One has to wonder how Howl works in those circumstances, but that's a question for another time. Additionally, Gruumsh One-Eye being an orcish god and not god of the forge is entirely dependant on the campaign setting; there's nothing in the scenario that specifies in what setting it takes place, so the god of any old thing being coincidentally named Gruumsh One-Eye isn't breaking any rules. The pantheons given in the PHB are suggestions, not rules. Which gods exist and with which domains are entirely the purview of the DM and since Brennan made the scenario and he put Gruumsh is god of the forge, then he is.
To be fair the silver axe would actually hurt the pit fiend because silver weapons bypass the devils resistance to nomagical weapons
I'm just surprised he didn't mention that demiliches have truesight, anyway. It was the most obvious error he missed. Also he was wrong about the silvered weapon thing. I had to look that up, tho.
Dodge is not a reaction. Fireball is a cleric spell as a light domain cleric.
Yes, but Omerek is not of the Light Domain, so it's not a cleric spell in the context of this comic.
Also: Benign transposition can't cast spells, it's a teleport ability. Unless they used it to get in range, but then it's 3 actions in total. The legendary action that lets Demiliches fly is 15 ft(half speed), not 30 ft. Jump is not a skill, and high jumps can only go up to 3 + str mod upwards. Even if this Rogue had 20 strength(which I doubt it had), it could only reach 8 ft. up.
um actually if the cleric is a light domain subclass, they do get access to fireball as a spell.
That's true! But that's also how we know Omerek isn't a light cleric. "Assume we didn't leave out any critical information" would include subclasses, and so Omerek's subclass can't be something that would affect their ability to cast fireball, otherwise the comic would have to mention it.
We GOTTA get maty, brennan, and iffy together in a clash of the titans
Brennan (Writer)
Matt did not touch on this, but the Pit Fiend uses two actions on its turn. It first casts Hold Monster and then takes the Attack Action making four attacks, which it cannot do.
I mean to be fair, light clerics get fireball as a cleric spell
IDK if this is a different edition, but in 5e pit fiends only have resistance to bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing, and silvered is the only thing that bypasses this, not magical attacks.
It's actually _nonmagical_ bludgeoning, piercing and slashing that isn't silvered. Silver bypasses it, but magic does too.
@@paradoxxis8612 oh, good eye! I missed that ngl
I knew 3rd edition this well back in the day. But haven't played nearly enough fifth edition to do this.
“Jump is not a skill” My 3.5e playing ass’s eye twitched.
