6-1 Header Swap On My Friend's Datsun 280Z
Support my videos through my dayjob: www.patreon.com/donnguyenknives
My friend Aaron has been wanting to swap his exhaust for a while but didn't have the space to do so, so we made a sleepover party out of it. The original exhaust sound had a nice idle but was fairly muted. The new headers make the inline 6 sound the way it should.
Pure, raw exhaust sound, with a manual gearbox. Not much else you could ask for.

I'm super excited. Can't wait to hear that pure exhaust note revving out under load (through that sad 3 speed auto, but whatever).
Revving that V12 one more time before rust repairs.

I have many, many things to do on this car before it can remotely even come to close to driving. So I spent my weekend making a merged v pipe out the side.

First project car. No it does not drive yet. Yes it idles high. Yes it has a misfire. Yes those floors are rusted out. First time starting it with the straight pipes from the cats back. No mufflers, no resonators. Two separate banks, no H, X, or merge yet.

Hello. What size rims and tires (black rims) are visible in the first photo from the video?
They were 15s off of an El Camino that were just temporarily used to transport the car. Too wide though and the offset was too far out, the tires would rub like hell.
My dude lookin’ like TDB for a second there. Lol good stuff!
With a very high lift cam
@@Ottobon probably needs a lot of overlap too
@@just_don_things you could also go for oversized primaries like on the a1gt jag. no one told me it has those i just know what they sound like, if you like deepness. not most hp efficient usually but sounds cool
Use a RamFlex gasket
You think it's possible of fitting this motor in a 93 xj? Jeep
Anything is technically possible.....

@@Ludicrous_Speedway a looot of work has been done to it since those last videos
Awesome job, homeboy.
As a fellow 280z owner I respect this. Love the "mad max" look and to see people keeping these old engines going.
SHort shifting it didn't help, ring it out! Does sound great from what we heard though.
Hahaha first test drive with a new setup and I was just trying to make sure there weren't issues. I'll be back to do it some justice though
@@aaronschultz5206 totally cool I get it, keen for that!
"That's actually pretty quiet!" This is relative hahaha.
So proud of my 2018 370Z Nismo Tech. The car is not lound and pretentious, with stock Nismo and (Stillen Gen 3 Long Tube AAM cat deletes) My message is - don't fool yourself with made-up sound you DO NOT rate. My neigbor has a late model Ferrari with short over 800 HP. You cannot hear it in the morning.
this thing dont need headers this thing needs bodywork and paint XD
That’s the anti-theft lol
needs less body work and less paint, more patina

I'm not sure if it was the intended goal, but this feels like I'm watching a documentary almost? The way its filmed, edited, and presented almost seems like a it was intended to be a documentary of some sorts and I really enjoy it. Keep it up!
@@SpicyKevin Thank you! I like making videos and I love working on all the details. Pacing and sound are the most important to me.
Nice work. I agree; an exhaust for top end sounds better than one for torque 👍🏾
Ey man big fan of the new project but what happend with the xj
Still got the Jag, it runs, spent an entire year diagnosing the electronic fuel system. It'll be driving soon again.
@@just_don_things ah nice. Alright. I've Heard those fuel systems can be a bit of a nightmare my dad had a 82' xj 6 (he had a couple) when i was younger always problems but always amazing to sit in the back when it was summer
@@GwnSerchanmine ended up being my ignition amplifier at first, which is on the older systems, and then multiple ignition systems later I got that working, and then very strangely in the process I wasn't able to get fuel to the injectors for the longest time even though they were able to get power. That turned out to be the magnetic rotor in the distributor.
You sound similar to me and have similar ambitions with your XJS. You gained a sub today.
What’s the exhaust setup? Sounds RAW.
This is just the two banks merged into one, no cats (they got clogged and blown out anyways...), mufflers, or resonators.
@@just_don_things ah I see. I think an x pipe on mine will deliver similar results.
Perfect sound! How can I get mine like this? Is is X Piped?
Dude I give you credit these cars aren’t for the faint of heart, in fact you’re probably glutton for punishment but they have a charm that most cars don’t have, I’m currently working on a LISTER and I’m beginning to question life at this point 🤣🤣🤣. I’ve subscribed and will be following along from here on.
Oh man, a Lister...
❤absolutely love your tenacity and enthusiasm... I would have chosen a car in a better condition to start off with... but you won't get cooker... keep it up and continue enjoying it
No idea how dangerous this was with the battery so close to the gushing gasoline. Take this from a fellow XJS owner who recently had my car catch on fire from using the wrong transmission cleaner that misted out the dipstick then onto my exhaust manifold. More common than people think, so have a fire extinguisher handy. Most parts are GM, so easy to buy parts and so much fun to drive.
Very dangerous, thinking about it afterwards gives me the heebeegeebees. It was all fumes up in that trunk and if I had sparked anything up with the battery I could have been a potentially tragic news story.
Wait, did you say C4? yikes. anyway, Cool Car. I'm a bit partial to my 77 XJ12
What can I say, I have a lot of questionable desires. Next I want a Lotus Esprit S1.
@@just_don_things Fair enough, ya like what ya like.I have a 77 xj12. Runs ok looks gorgeous. I'm very happy with that. Cheers!

I doff my cap to you sir , what a labour of love to take on! I thought I had taken on the father of all projects with my own XJS but you put me in the shade all day long! Engine sounds great,I wish you luck.
Man that was so dangerous, one spark from that cabling and you would have been toast.
You're completely right, and in hindsight I seriously should have known better. Got caught up in a bit of a panic.
@@just_don_things Glad you got out alive 😊 Love the XJS BTW 👌🏻
Any car can sound like this without full exhaust, back box + silencers.
I'd like to hear a Geo Metro sound like this
Take the exhaust of & see for yourself! Obviously will sound slightly different to a big v12 JAG
@@equalevolution5563 my point was that every engine will sound different, regardless of if there are mufflers+cats+resonators. The sound of this V12 in particular is night and day difference when it was running rough and when it's now properly tuned. My 94 Acura straight piped sounds absolutely nothing like this. Engines will sound "loud" when you take that stuff off but not many cars will sound "like this" if you just remove those.
True! This v12 sounds like a big block carburettor muscle car.. it’s very deep. Sounds like TWR xjs.
You'd have to be half deaf, not to hear difference between engines without exhaust . The sound is a LOT different.
Remove all plugs. Do a compression check (properly). Ground plugs and verify all are firing. Sounds like your running on 6 cylinders. Jag v12 ignition can get a little old and funky. One step at a time or get a second job.
It's been a long time since this video and I've done a whole overhaul of the ignition and fuel system. All 12 fire now with proper timing, good fuel pressure, and clean injectors. Sounds vastly different but honestly I have a guilty pleasure for the rough idle
@@just_don_thingscan I pick your brain on the fuel and ignition setup? Or do you have it posted on your channel?
He just disabled 4 cylinders and made it an American beast 😤
I need to get a standalone ecu that can deactivate cylinders on a V12...
@@just_don_things well a standalone ECU also allows for tuning options, including flex fuel probably. E85, 93.. it'll probably be worth the investment. Also, no ya don't, you can just pull the coil packs. No spark, no boom.
@@SebastianWoodard Oh yeah, long term engine build I definitely want to go the standalone route.
@@just_don_things I'm excited to see what ya do with er!
I'm not gonna lie it don't sound bad lol
I could listen to it all day honestly
Sounds like a catless V12 JAGUAR
its still so nice
Agreed.
Oh buy the way. Been working on xjs's for 20 years. My current 15 year project is a 1986 v12. Must say kid you got balls.
Hope that doesn't occur again but if you find yourself in a similar spot. Go in the gas station and buy a bar of soap. Rub it / push it in to leaking area should stop fuel from leaking until you can get home and repair. Old off road repair for small puncture in fuel tanks.
Wait is that a real thing? What an amazing last ditch tip
Yes learned about this from an old Subaru off road book. And yes Subaru's were a off road poor mans dam tough vehicle. Not the ride you see today. Any car company that can put two seats in the back of a pick up with friggen handles is awesome. Now have I tried the soap thing? No but in your past situation I bet anything was worth a try. God what an ass puckering experience. @@just_don_things
Very cool project, something about it sitting on steelies with nearly no chrome is a great look too
Before anyone starts running these old cars that have been sitting a long time, your best bet is to drop the tanks and have them cleaned out professionally if they're not a big rust bucket, find replacements if it is possible. That's what I did with a 1970 Jaguar xj6. Dropped both fuel tanks and started from scratch. When I was finished that car was running like it just came out of the showroom
It is super exciting to have a running Jaguar v12 engine🎉
Agreed!
Unless they have a larger size and a y pipe, I never really liked the sound of them straight piped. But I take it this one is an 'Involuntary' straight pipe, huh? 😂
