Revit Help: Creating Property Lines with Arcs
Recently I had a project where two segments of the property line were arcs. When creating property lines, I prefer to do so using the Property Line Data Table tool in Revit. This is so I can get the real world north of the property. It usually is tricky when it comes to arcs. In this video I show you two workarounds for arcs. The first is pretty simply using the sketch tool, and with the second I realized that Revit is looking for the chord length of an arc, not the length of the arc itself. That also means you need to figure out the bearing angle of that chord, which I show here.

Using AI in the design process
มุมมอง 1805 หลายเดือนก่อน
Here's an example of how I've been using AI in the design process. I have a plug-in for Revit, which is Evolvelab's Veras, which creates rendering from a view based off of prompts and geometry and material override settings. This is a great tool to help with getting some design ideas kickstarted. There are other applications for this later in the design process. What are some questions you have...

Revit Help - Creating Roof Dormer Openings
มุมมอง 1.1Kปีที่แล้ว
While working on a project today I had a few roof dormer openings to create and thought this was a good tip to show. The important key to remember when creating a roof dormer opening is to separate the surrounding walls from each other so that the walls will correctly attach to the roof. Have any questions, let me know in the comments below.
Revit Help: Template setup using View Templates

Another series, this time covering my concepts and processes for setting up my template file in Revit. My approach to the template is to have a lighter file with only a few items in it that I've use in the majority of my projects. Besides families the other item that I setup are the view templates for the different types of views. Here I show how I use the view templates to build up my views as...

Revit Help: Using Yes/No Family Parameter for Quick Solution to Client's Request
มุมมอง 313ปีที่แล้ว
Recently I had a project situation where my client needed updated drawings in about an hours time from when I saw the email. I needed to create a new family for structural outriggers on a deck, and had two different sizes to make. If I had more time I usually would make a parametric family that could essentially be any size. Since I didn't have the time, I used the Yes/No parameter and assigned...
Revit Detail Component How To: Reference Planes
มุมมอง 1.5Kปีที่แล้ว
When creating a detail component family in Revit, the basis for the family (and pretty much any family) is to set the reference planes first. In this video I show my wood framed construction detail component, and how I set up the components in the family to "lock" to the reference planes. This allows the family to flex when used in a project.

    Hi Rich, do you know if there's any way to lock to multiple reference planes without having to hit each padlock individually? For example, setting all four sides of a rectangle to four different reference planes.

    • @richthearchitect8739

      No and I believe that’s done on purpose. In my experience some features that are automatic can cause more problems than solve them.

    • @richthearchitect8739
      @richthearchitect8739 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Matterport doesn’t provide any geolocation data. I’ve looked into this with other point clouds created from other scanning cameras. Even with other cameras I haven’t found a good way to do this.

    Hi Rich! Great video, I like the idea if sorting the project browser according to drawing phases. I´m wondering what's the reason for creating the new parameter, couldn't you just add a new organization scheme to the existing browser organisation options? Also, what's the difference between applying view template properties in project browser vs. applying view template on the properties palette? Thanks!

    • @richthearchitect8739
      @richthearchitect8739 ปีที่แล้ว

      The additional parameter allows you to sort by drawing package type. In my case I have design plans, zoning plans, and building permit plans at a minimum. I also use framing, demolition, and existing conditions plans, which are in my template, but not always used. The browser organization tools don’t accommodate this out of the box. Applying the view template in the browser allows for a one time application where it’s not attached to the view. When applying through the properties it’s attached to the view, meaning if you make changes to the view template it will automatically update any view it’s attached to.

    Thanks for this great tutorial. We might start a project in a big lot with multiple buildings. The principle asked me to look into it and see if we should do it in one Revit file, or multiple file with linking the way you did. What's the benefit of linking units into one file rather than just one big file? Or what if we have buildings in different shapes, like Unit1 Unit2, etc.

    • @richthearchitect8739
      @richthearchitect8739 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on how the set of drawings are to be issued. If the entire project with multiple buildings are all in one set having everything in one file may make sense. The size of the file may dictate this as well. If the file size starts getting greater than 1 or 2gb, then you’ll want to split up the project files into individual buildings. If there are the same buildings repeated and each building has its own drawing set , then having linked units into a file also makes sense.

    if not multiple buildings is it still best practice to have a separate revit site model? the building pads and topo i suppose will always be separate from the model, but good thing is it works with topo points to be entered with survey elevation numbers from survey.

    • @richthearchitect8739
      @richthearchitect8739 ปีที่แล้ว

      It will depend on the project and how its setup. For a single family home project I typically will have the site modeled in the same file as the rest of the project. For larger projects this may not make sense to do.

    Hi Rich, I can't figure out how to make a simple stretchable cube. For instance, I'd like to make a wood stud family with Type Parameters for Width and Depth, and a stretchable grip for an Instance Parameter that controls the Height of the object (stud). I can't seem to figure this out. Do you have any videos showing this?

    • @richthearchitect8739
      @richthearchitect8739 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don’t have a video, but this could possible be done by locking each end of a reference line to a reference plane and then aligning each side of the geometry to the reference line. I’ll have to test this out. When I have some time I’ll put together a video for it if it works.

      I had the same question, but in a Column family - and I think I have the answer - step by step as follows (each step is critical): In the Column family: A) create the extrusion in the plan view, and give it a random height. B) In the family, switch to Elevation view. In the elevation view, note that the Column family comes with a Upper Reference Level - pre-set to 9'-0". C) While in Elevation view, in the Modify tab, click on Align, then click the Upper Reference Level line, then click the top "shape handle" (in other words the top of) the column extrusion. The top of the column will now align with the Upper Reference Level. D) Then click on the lock symbol - to lock the top of extrusion shape handle to the Upper Reference Level. NOTE: This upper reference level is the critical "Dynamic" top control, that, after you load the family into the project, allows you to change the column height dynamically. E) Save the Family, then load it into the project F) Place the column, then go into elevation or section view (or you can stay in the plan view) G) Click on the column, and in the Properties pallette, under Constraints, adjust the top offset to whatever you want it to be H) Note that the top of column height has changed. You're done. Note that in the Column family, you do not need to create a top reference plane or do a dimension parameter, as the Upper Reference Level that is part of the family controls the dynamic height. This is not the case with other family types, like Generic families. In these family types, I believe the author is right in that you have to create a top reference plane and lock the top of the extrusion to that reference plane, and the dimension parameter somehow needs to be "dynamic" so that it can be adjusted in the model - wish I had more specifics there. Hope this helps

      I take the .xyz file you get from the Matterpak into Autodesk Recap. Recap converts the file into a .rcp file, which Revit recognizes. I still use Matterport. I keep most of my tours private since most of them are used for creating a point cloud to be used for the purpose in this video. The only time I make them public are for commercial clients who want a completed project tour to use for marketing.
