I wanted to make a quick video showing how to repair parts on a Pop Bumper (Turbo Bumper) on my Sega South Park pinball machine. All replacement parts were purchased from Pinball Life Tools Required: 1. Philips screwdriver 2. Soldering Iron 3. 8mm Socket wrench This method should work for late model Sega machines, and newer Stern tables. It may be similar for other brands as well.

    This video is fantastic, and possibly a starting point for me. I've been chasing the idea for years to run my older games on an actual RGB CRT (Sony Trinitron) but have always got lost in how to actually create the older signal type 15KHz and 240p. (is it 30Hz or 60Hz?) The last thing on Earth I'd expect is to be able to get this out of a cheap HDMI to VGA adaptor or a Pi. There are so many years of rabbit holes requiring really old software and special Hardware to produce this result. With no real answers or hardware availability. This looks like it could actually work much to my surprise. I have a number of other issues to overcome as my MAME and ROMS are all from 1997 and only work on some old Windows98/95 version of MAME32 that I have. So apparently, I need a more modern version of MAME and all new ROMS as my old ones will not work. But that's an entirely different issue that I can figure out.

    Love this technique but if you want to remove the Interlaced flicker on 480I (mode 6) you can use the following settings to get a flicker free progressive version that is perfect to the original boards. I have tried this with Circus Charlie and I get a perfect result. Took a lot of trial and error on resolutions but here are my settings on config.txt :) Hope this helps :) #hdmi_safe=1 # uncomment this if your display has a black border of unused pixels visible # and your display can output without overscan disable_overscan=1 overscan_scale=1 # uncomment the following to adjust overscan. Thanks! My goal is typically to make the game just a board swap away from being original if I’m putting a pi or PC in it. I actually just did a GroovyArcade build with an old PC using the same breakout cable. Turned out well, except I had to bypass the JPAC for the video because it just wouldn’t sync no matter what I tried. 😢

    • @arcadesunday4592
      @arcadesunday4592 ปีที่แล้ว

      @sk8ersublime I guess the JPAC bypass using GroovyArcade would be necessary, as GroovyArcade (well, GroovyMAME in that build) does all of the front porch / back porch / 15Khz analogue CRT conversation output itself, without any special convertor (ie: a JPAC, etc)... hence its charm (and AMAZING emulation results). GroovyArcade is amazing.

    When you tie the horizontal and vertical sync lines into a single line going into the arcade CRT, do you have to add a resistor in series between those lines and the monitor? Doesn't that double the potential current going into the monitor's sync?

    I bought one of these cga adaptors, they are pretty decent so long as you have a good quality screened vga cable and a decent graphics card, when i hooked it up to the vga port on my old laptop the picture was a mess, blurry and lots of interference i thought great this no good, but when i hooked it up to my gaming pc via dvi on a nivida gtx 670 the picture was spot on, nice solid colours and and no colour bleeding or interference, these are good little adaptors, the only issue with them is they don't remember you picture settings so its best to use your monitor controls and any other picture adjustment should be made in the graphics card control panel, luckly nivida has a decent control panel to get the picture perfect. I also have one of those ipacs, although they work fine for emulators for 2 player mode they are pretty useless for pc games as i found out with streets of rage 4, unfortunately the pc sees them as a keyboard so a second player option is unavailable on some pc games unless you have a usb controller which is what i did, i bought 2 usb controllers stripped them and soldered wires to the pcb, boxed it and plugged it into my control pannel and pc for 2 players and it works fine, got rid of the jpac as sor4 is a must on my cab and pretty useless with out 2 player option.

    Instant sub, thanks for the info! Question. I have two CRT monitors with the CGA/9-pin input (and the requisite RGB pins visible/accessible inside, similar to an arcade monitor) that seem like maybe they were from a video wall or similar. Before I go buy an RPi3 and/or other accessories, is there any chance a weird resolution would prevent this from working? And/or if so, any other ideas for testing these CGA/9-pin monitors somehow before ditching/donating them?

    • @sk8ersublime

      If your monitor has a VGA port, it’s likely not a CGA arcade monitor or a hi res monitor. I believe At that point you can just use a normal VGA resolution with an HDMI adaptor. You wouldn’t need to do these settings as they are here to force the pi to output to old low res arcade monitors 15K signal. Instead of the 30 you get from VGA.

      When they are talking CGA and EGA on arcade, they are referring to analog RGB. Somewhere along the way they co-opted the terms to incorrectly apply them to CGA and EGA high resolution refresh rates to of analog video with composite sync, even though REAL CGA and EGA were digital and did not use composite sync. It would be closer to compare what they are calling CGA to European SCART RGB, as that would be vary close specs.

As far as I know it is not recommended to just connect both cables together, you need a combiner circuit like this: www.retrorgb.com/building-a-passive-sync-combiner.html . Also, there is a specific 666 converter that has the csync ready: retrogamerestore.com/vga666rgbs/

    I'm confused as hell. You are doing HDMI to a VGA adaptor. What is the actual monitor? (just watched the video again to get that) Is the Wells Gardner actually just a VGA monitor? (guessing no) "standard arcade monitor from the time" no specs that I can find so far. =Your title is CGA and 240p= You DO NOT get a CGA digital 16 color signal from an HDMI to VGA adaptor! and also the Wells Gardner is not a CGA digital input monitor right? What's going on here? also I am new to this. I am trying to figure out how to get 240P RGB and Sync from a Pi to an RGB monitor at 15KHz (which you also can't get from standard VGA) Also can't find any kind of spec sheet on a Wells Garner 4900 or 4901. Confused still? yes very. And I expect those to be analog RGB +Sync 240p 15KHz And not what I'd expect you getting from and HDMI to VGA adaptor on a Pi. Help! and thanks!

    • @sk8ersublime
      @sk8ersublime 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The monitor is a Wells Gardener 4901 which is a CGA arcade monitor that accepts RGB @ 15K. It is not a VGA monitor which would be a 31K sync. I’m not going to pretend I know everything here haha, but the timing settings for the HDMI mode on the raspberry pi config are what deliver the correct RGB signal @ 15K. I just found the settings online on an arcade forum. The HDMI to VGA adaptor is allowing me to get the RGB and Sync on separate connections so the monitor can accept the input. Hopefully that makes sense and helps.

      CGA monitor is 4bit TTL and not VGA. So one of my points of confusion is that going from HDMI-->VGA-->monitor is NOT a CGA TTL signal. (if that is a VGA adaptor). HDMI to VGA would normally do exactly that, Change HDMI to VGA RGB analog 31KHz. (thus my confusion so far).

    • @n8lbv
      @n8lbv 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think what might be going on here (and I can only totally guess or make shit up at this point) is that the "VGA" adaptor is not really a VGA adaptor, but maybe some kind of straight through connector actually from the HDMI itself and the HDMI itself might be generating TTL CGI stuff using special software/driver. But a totally random thought I am pulling out of nowhere.

I also entered the changes in the config.txt but no dice no picture on my car 15kHz zaxxon cabinet my screen works with Saxon pcb. What version of retropi should I be using? Think I'm going to update my rasppi have not updated my pi2 in 3 years. How's the south park pin going? I'm sure I'm missing something or I'm thinking of getting the jamma hat for mine like you did on your other machine. Thanks if you can help in anyway but no biggie if your busy. Thanks for sharing your videos.

      I’m using the arpicade image. Not using retropie. I have only done this on a Pi3 and Pi3+. Verify your pinout is correct and that your zaxxon sync it correctly configured. South Park is working great! I need to get new artwork for it and a colorDMD and then there won’t really be much more to do to it :) The RasberryJamma is an awesome device if you just want it to work without the headache of creating a cable and messing with config.txt. I bought mine from highscoresaves and got the arpicade image from their support forums.

      After you get your south park sorted what's your next project?? That's a great pinball. I have stern lightning, stern ted nugent, stern meteor which like you I drove 3 half hours one way to get that one. And a Williams laser ball. All been rebuilt in some ways. Anyway I decided to buy the same one you have from same company with games and the 10 extra for.zaxxon picture not sure what that is a image of zaxxon. and the connector with no wires and a rasp.3+ $237.00 I really want to keep my zaxxon it.all.works and pcb after hours of trying to figure out the board with a pulse ic tester. Found out it was one of my ram chips. But sure was worth it fixing myself. I found the ram chip on eBay and the seller decided to send all ten ram.chips for price of one I messaged him and he said they been sitting in is store for 10years. He said someone might has well have them. Very cool! I've kept my crt.But when I got machine it had a lot of burn in So I picked up a few crt tv's on CL all.19 in and changed the tube for a Samsung and used my old yoke. I capped it and it took some time with setting it up convergence and magnet strips but the TPG from arcadepartsandrepair. Made it easier to.adjust. That company is great the owner is super helpful and emails you very quickly with answers. Can you recommend a company for my control panel graphics for my zaxxon? Can't seem.to find any place on google. The Pac man cabinet looks to be in good shape? And that video you made on donkey Kong marque with your phone that video.quality was.So poor! To bad I wanted to see that better maybe you can make a video of cabinet again? And thanks for the info I'm still going to try to see if I can get it to work whilst I'm waiting for my order can't wait to see how this all.works out. Thanks

      TheSawyer10702 oh man...that donkey Kong scratch build....I don’t have it anymore. I had a real DK but I’ve sold it since :( For artwork, check with thisoldgame or szabosarcade. Both can probably do custom for you if they don’t have it. Thisoldgame has super zaxxon listed

      TheSawyer10702 buy a jamma harness and rewire your cabinet. Or find an adaptor for a zaxxon to jamma. Do not plug the arpicade into your cabinet until you verify you have a jamma connection and your voltages are going to the correct jamma pin standard!

    Great video and great explanation! Do you know if I could do this with a medium (EGA) resolution monitor? Thanks for the video.

      I’m not sure off hand, as I’ve never worked with one before. I would assume it would work as long as RGB and Sync are the same, but you would use a higher resolution. But Again I do not have experience with that. Thanks for watching!

      @shark80228 I have an old school Japanese Sharp CRT monitor Analog DB9. I haven’t connected it to anything yet. What are the res differences on CGA vs EVA?

    • @Shark80228
      @Shark80228 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@r.in.shibuya CGA is 15khz and ega is 25khz. EGA is medium resolution and CGA is a lower resolution. Getting input at the correct frequency is the tricky part. I'm still trying to figure it out.

      Shark80228 thanks the for the reply. I am dealing with a CRT monitor that has a DB9 input (SHARP CU-14AG2) all I know it’s a color RGB, I believe it was for the old first gen PC’s (NEC PC98). It turns on but still no source to test it with. I picked up the HDMI > VGA (db15) converter and used a db15>db9 pin converter. Before I adjusting setting with my Raspberry Pi I want to make sure it’s working. I do See the crt rays minimizing and expanding on the screen when I switch it on an off... but I’m not sure if that a marker of it being 100% functional, I do have a strong feeling the monitor is fine.

    Great job! I’m in the same position with my miss Pac man cabinet. What version of mame are you using? And I guess the trick is to find the roms for that version of mame. Also did you get the high score saving to work? I have a similar set up with RaspberryJAMMA but trouble with some games working or appearing in the menu

      I’m using various versions as some work better for certain games. I’m using the ArPiCade image that I use with my RaspberryJamma. It has versions .207, .192, .172 and .139 I believe. I would have to double check

    Enjoyed the video! Curious what version of mame you are using? I have about 10 diffrent arpicade images and always on the lookout for which roms work best with each software version. (Arpicade 3.7, 3.8, etc...). By the way, the Arpicade itself is a fantastic product for any Jamma setup.

      Yea the RaspberryJamma aripicade is an amazing plug and play solution. I have the 4 player version in my TMNT cabinet since it didn’t have a board and it’s been great. For mame version, I’m using the arpicade 3.9 image so I think that has .207, .192, .172, and .139.
