Welcome to the SWLSignals channel. This channel would feature what I am hearing on the shortwave bands from my own radios and web SDRs. I will showcase shortwave broadcasts from other countries, utilities, number stations, digital, CW, FAX, and other decodes. There are several signals out there, lets discover!
Below are some links to sites I use while scanning the bands and listening to help identify what I am hearing.

Nice. Don’t think I’ve ever seen them on that frequency before either.
Love the bandscan videos!
That's great! Thanks for watching and commenting. Any band you would like to see in the future?
@@SWLSignals23-hp6vp I’m not picky but maybe a evening bandscan would be interesting to see what you find at night for your location
Cool
I'm glad you liked it. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Thank you for sharing this information. I also have a small radio like this and like to listen to it. This tells me what to expect.
You're very welcome.
Your scans are very useful to me, when I go out to the shack and try to find these stations and services on the shortwave bands. Absolutely amazing and awesome. Shortwave lives! 73 and a great morning to you.
Shortwave listening never ceases to amaze me. I am glad the scans are helpful, that is why I make them. Have a great day, 73!
Personal experience: Morning= Asia/ Pacific. Afternoon/Evening=Africa/Europe. Midday=Middle Eastern countries. A lot of times because of “atmospherics” I can either get s lot or something nothing at all. That’s why I always look forward to seeing your scans. Outside of that it’s true uou never know what you’re going to find.
Yes that is my experience as well. I would like to listen more in the mornings, but work starts early. I prefer to listen at night since Europe comes in nicely and I like a lot of the stations from Europe. I do miss the European stations of the 80s and 90s though. I will probably be out in the park this Saturday to see what I can hear!
@@SWLSignals23-hp6vpI wish I would be able to get up a lot earlier for a few days just to see what I actually hear. Not too much an early morning person.
I wasn't in my younger years, but as I get older, I been getting up earlier.
Do you have a preference between SDRUno and SDRConnect? I'm not sure, but I have a slight preference to Uno, but it could be that I started there.
I don't really. SDRConnecr is not fully developed yet, so I am expecting to see more features. UNO has a lot of features I like, but I the reception of signals is about the same. I started with UNO also.
I really like this station. Enjoy the music and sports here. This station is usually clear, and when it’s not there, I really do miss it. 73 and a pleasant day to you.
That's another I love about SWL, cultural music!
Really like the form factor of this radio. Like the idea of a one handed radio that actually works ok for the MW and SW bands.
I like it too, fits well in my pocket. It works well, but does have a slight warbel when in SSB and pushing the keys to enter a new frequency. When you are done entering the frequency it's fine. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Man, that is surely.....weird!
It sure is. Strange that I can't identify it yet, still looking.
How wide is that signal? 10 kHz? I've never heard anythign like it. I recently downloaded (but haven't installed it yet) Artemis. Have you ever used Artemis for a purpose like this? It's software from the same Sigwiki guys
It was larger than that; maybe 40 to 50, looks like it on the video.. I've not heard of Artimis. I will research and download if needed, thank you!
Ok I've downloaded Artimas, but still cannot locate a signal that looks and sounds like that.
Dance Beat🤗
Sure did sound like it.
Hi, I have a Dx 440 in pristine condition. Ebay find. $45.00 I love it so.
Awesome! Congratulations!
That is in super shape! I wonder if it sat in the box for most of the intervening years. Not much dust, which is what killed off a similar radio I had.
I was thinking that too.
About a year or so ago while walking through a flea market I found and bought a DX 390, it has a BFO circuit which allows ssband reception, it has very good sensitivity as well as selectivity, it comes close to the recieve quality of the many ham radios I have, it was the best $10 I've spent in decades...
Yep I had a 390 back in 90s. I had to put it on lay-away at a local Radio Shack. It was my first short wave radio, I used it everyday. It was an excellent radio. I remember using it with just the telescopic listening to USCG SAR missions on 5696 and 8080 kHz, receiving the Israeli MOSSAD number station, and more. I was hooked on SWL at that point. Thanks for watching and commenting!
13920 Sound of Hope, Taiwan. 13790 probably SOH again. abt 13418 . French Navy, Saissac, STANAG-4481 has been seen there there. fits the description. 13019.9 probably SOH there as well
Thank you.
Nice. Some times audio on that frequeny is complete garbage, but it sounds good here. 73
They seem to have a lot of times when the transmitters being down rather than up. I would like to see that fixed, but I'm sure those transmitters and maintenance are not cheap. Thanks for watching and thanks for commenting.
I barely heard KRN on the RSPdx noticed a signal next door on frequency 13158 USB which was a little better than the first frequency pretty certain it was the same marine WX report as 13149. Signed off at 2:50UTC.
I will try that one too. I have heard it before and thought maybe it was WLO out of Mobile AL, but once I was able to hear the SW ident at the end, I did some research and found it to me KRN Radio. Based on what I saw that it was in Long Island I searched SDRs in the NE until I could hear it better to validate my findings. Thank you for watching and commenting!
@@SWLSignals23-hp6vp I get new frequencies from your videos that you hear but I may not receive in NM. I could barely hear KRN but was worth recording even if could barely hear it. Keep up with the videos, good stuff.
Thank you for watching, and thank you for the comment. I was very surprised to actually hear It here in Florida. One of the whole points of making these videos is so people will be able to try to hear different things on shortwave radio. I'd be interested in trying some frequencies that you would hear in New Mexico
Thats cool! I swear the waves in the spectrum on there look like actual ocean waves. I need to get my antenna back up and start listening again! Hope all is well with ya, and if you're a father then Happy Fathers Day!
Yeah the CODAR signals cool to watch. And yes I am a father, 18 yoa son and 15 yoa daughter, so thank you. And if you are too. Happy Father's Day!
Sounds like coordinated universal time
It does but it didn't have any announcements. Haven't heard it since.
DX-380 is noisier and sounds not very good.
Yes, today's technology definitely has better sounding equipment than years ago. Thanks for watching. Thanks for commenting. Have a great day.
Actually good reception today from China. I don’t hear China as often as I used to. These stations used to be all over every band. 73 and have a great weekend.
Good day! I hear them a lot in the mornings. The one from Cuba of course is best here since it is only 90 miles South of Florida.
¿Aeronautical HF comm.? Saludos desde Cali, Colombia.
Sí
whattt i want one
I am very happy with it. I think it was a good purchase.
Confirmed, I was able to get it on the same radio with a GA450 near the window.
On a telescopic antenna? Or an external antenna?
Hi, do you mind me asking what program are using to listen to these? Where can i find a list of these frequencies? How do you send them a listening report? Thanks, Eric.
Of course! I use SDR Console v3.3 (which is what is in the video) - I also use SDRUno, and SDRConnect preview 2(new software in beta). This programs are used with my SDRPlay RSP1A SDR. I use different websites for finding frequencies or validating what I am hearing. I have a couple of videos that may help: th-cam.com/video/I4IkfEVwres/w-d-xo.html - showing the website eibispce.de and its use th-cam.com/video/Z2FNRxh1jCU/w-d-xo.html - showing different websites I use Thank you for watching and commenting. I would like to know if these are helpful and if I can help you, please let me know! Thanks!
As for a listening report, the easiest way is to look up the website of the station. They normally will post an email or postal address where you can send a reception report.
@SWLSignals23-hp6vp thank you very much, I watched both videos, and that was very useful 👍. Thank you ever so much.
@@tourdumondiste1 you're very welcome.
Pretty cool!! I haven't heard RNZI in years. I liked listening to them (and R. Australia) simply because they are pretty close to being on the other side of the world. Sad to say I've never heard a signal from around Indonesia or so.
Yes. I am always excited to RZI or any station from the other side of the world, what other hobby is this exciting!
I found the same transmitting on 8722 usb very weakly on a kiwi sdr out of Pass Christian, MS today approx 2015 utc and :45 past the hour. This is the nearest kiwi sdr I could find to Mobile AL. I think it may be WLO on a different freq. Nothing heard on 8788 though.
Unable to catch any station ID. Weak.
Thank you for the comments. I will continue to monitor this. I think you may be onto something. Maybe they switched to this freq from the other.
Nice catch. SDR looks like fun to play with. 73 and have a great time with your SDR.
Thank you. SDRs are a great tool to use in the SWL toolbox. Thanks for watching and commenting.
In that spooky, electronic "female" voice, no less! Did I hear Gulf of Mexico? But in English. Perhaps a Coast Guard station or automated C.G. beacon somewhere on the Gulf Coast? Alabama?
I was thinking perhaps somewhere along the gulf coast. I've have heard the rebirth of WLO in mobile AL. But it has a more robotic voice and is on a different frequency. I know I heard a "W" on the CW identifier at the end of the transmission, but I had already stopped my video before it, of course, darn!
Thank you
You're welcome
8:00 XJ9-CS14, guaranteed.
What is XJ9-CS14?
ats909 and R861 are defo where its at for me best sound and sensitivity of all my radios i have several of both models and they are all equally nice thanks mate!
You're most welcome. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Thanks for the info. Also picking up heavy transmissions traffic clearly on this frequency (13330 khz) on my D808 today . Not finding this on today"s HF freq assignments though. ATC has been informing backup freq 11396. According to today's primary assignment, Caribbean Atlantic and Northeast US 11396 is primary with 8846 as secondary. Could be 13330 is something temporary or as you stated a new freq for NY. I'm going to preset this freq into my HF aero memory for future reference.
Yes I did too. Thanks for watching and for the comments, lots of good info there.
I'm still looking at a 3-month old listing for a lightly used TechniSat ATS-909. It's identical to your Sangean, right down to the grey plastic too! 🙂 I'm not sure whether it's a good idea to buy the ATS-909 since it's been around for twenty years and I worry about the LCD display going bad. That's the most difficult replacement component to find since this model had been discontinued a long time ago.
Radio Shack had the DX398 which I've heard is the 909, but branded by Radio Shack. When considering buying older radios, I always look at all the pictures by the seller. Often they would show the display so you at least see it. You wouldn't know if it would go out or not of course. When I bought my mine I asked the seller these questions: does it turn on, does the audio work, is the antenna broken, etc. I also asked for an additional picture of the backlight on the 909. I received answers and the additional picture I asked for. Never hurts to ask.
Sangean ATS 909 top of the class again
It definitely had the best sound.
Sounds like they fixed some of their transmitters. I think they were having issues for a while. It used to come in about that strong even here in Illinois.
Yes I think they did Hope you can hear it again soon, thanks for watching and commenting!
* kHz
Thank you, I keep forgetting about that!
As a teenager, I was interested in radio and ham radio, tried learning Morse, but gave up. That said, still to this day, 40 years later, I remember mnemonics a radio ham taught me about learning Morse. L. Think of Linoleum. Lin-o-lee-um. Dit-Dah-Dit-Dit Q. Think of the Here Comes The Bride melody. Dah-Dah-Dit-Dah
Awesome tips! Thank you for watching and replying!
Nice catch! In general, are you able to match reception on various signals on say your 990x that you pick up on your SDR using the same antenna during the same time of day/night? Just wondering if a quality portable could stand up to an SDR such as yours-reception wise. Having the convenience of visual signals is very nice.
I have two MLA30 plus loop antennas. One I use for my portables, the other for my SDR. I will need to purchase an adapter/splicer to use my SDR antenna for both. I can physically disconnect and reconnect them if needed, but that's a pain to do under and behind the desk. I get good reception on my portables as well, but the antenna for the SDR is 3 feet above ground and the other is 10 feet. The one at 3 feet out performs the other, which is why I use it for my SDR. They are both the same model, but height makes a difference or me.
Turns out I had some spare cables I could use to use the antenna for both. Time for some testing!
Alright, good deal!
Really enjoyed the video. Based in the UK, I used to do a lot of scanning back in the late 90s/early 2000s. I've been thinking about buying a radio to see what's still out there. Thanks very much for sharing this, happy to be a subscriber and will be a regular viewer!
I'm glad you are enjoying the videos and thank you for subscribing. There a lot of excellent portables out there. I watch reviews regularly on TH-cam of radios to see which one works best for the price and features that are important to me. I have three Tecsuns (PL990x, PL680, PL368), two XHDatas (D-219, and D-368), and an Sangean ATS 909. I enjoy them all!
@@SWLSignals23-hp6vp Thanks so much for sharing that, I'll check them out today and let you know what I end up with 👍
This is the most radom video youtube could have suggested on my home page. And I watched it :).
Awesome, thank you for watching. Do you have any questions about what you watched, or did you like it?
They had a good signal today. Thank you for watching!
You bet
Amazing! They sound just the same today as when I first heard them in 1980.
Yep it was strong today!
Nice to have a back up to internet. Getting a license these days no code is a breeze. Hope one day to get back on air
Good luck to you.
didnt see it on signal wiki
Me either
Thanks for identifying CODAR and other types of signals.
You're welcome, thank you for watching!
This is s part of the new commercial trade commission senders. They don’t want to use computers anymore because of their latency.
I thought it might be based on some other videos I have seen. But thank you for the clarification!
I spend every day on 40 meters into the night when the band stretches out into Europe, I've noticed illegal transmissions at 7.200.00 possibly out of Canada. 7.125.00 to 7.175.00 is the extra class portion that you can learn a lot about radio with some of the qso's going on there. '73 Harley kc9gld Indiana
Yes I agree, I've learned quite a lot from listening. Thank you for the reply.
The low portion of the 40 meter band, the digital signal you heard was FT8.
Thank you.
Yes, 7.00.00 thru 7.125.00 is all digital only, cw (Morse code), Ft8, Amtor, Pactor, Hellschribner, and many new ones , I'm not into digital, another daytime band is 20 meters, 14.0 to 14.350.00, I've heard many vessels on the oceans calling hams for help over the years at 14.300.00 , that is MMSN ,Meritime Mobile Service Net, today many Captains ask hams to update their positions on "Ship Track", if they have computer issues on board, another good time to listen there is when Hurricanes break out around the world. That PL 990 is a nice receiver by the way... Watch your flea markets, people today don't know what they have, last summer I stumbled across a Realistic DX 390 for $2 !!
Thank you for the info!
