Guitar pick material comparison - celluloid, nylon, ultem, Delrin/Tortex, & polycarbonate
มุมมอง 1.8Kปีที่แล้ว
Guitar pick material comparison - celluloid, nylon, ultem, Delrin/Tortex, & polycarbonate
why did it take 3 times to get it right ? (it's obviously baffling me how anyone uses those soggy floppy Dorito Fender style picks but still bother with the jazz I and jazz II withch are reallybasicly just worn out III's?)
Some people like the Jazz I and Jazz II picks. Maybe they are better for rhythm. Andy Summers used to play Jazz II The Jazz III seem to a lot more popular
Celluloid loves loves loves FALLING IN sound holes😂 nylon is comfy ans tortex gives you all rounded playability. I didnt see a difference between the sound hole love with get and celluloid. I like the subtle thump of the nylon on accoustic especially if i have brighter strings on my guitar.
Interesting. i really dont know why they went for in between sizes. Oddest picks ever. The biggest difference i heard was the .67mm sounded more prounounced with chords a bit warmer actually. .73mm really shone with individual notes
Yes they are unusual and hard to find.
I really love triangle picks. specially the Tortex orange ones
I like them a lot as well. They are easy to grip
@@earthsteward9 And the yellow ones. Usually when my grip stays light and consistent i go yellow. Glad someone else lives em too
Very useful. To my ears, diferences are negligible with diferent materials, but very clear between light and heavy pickups. Thank you.
Nice video but no need to see you, let's see the guitars,
Great Review.. l like the prime Tone picks... I have that 1.3 triangle, and what I really like is the bevel. Slides easily across the strings... There is a learning curve on the triangle picks, but they are actually more stable in the hand because they are broader. Plus you are getting 3 picks in 1 essentially !
Yes I was noticing the interesting bevel when I was taking the photo for the thumbnail. For the review, I just pulled it out of the package and started filming. Do you use triangle picks most of the time?
I usually use 'Flow Shape' picks (which are kind of similar to triangle- wide top). I do use 'Honey' Casein triangle picks on Steel String Acoustic (2.5mm).
Have you ever tried V-Picks???
All the V-picks are Acrylic... Which I find a little too Bright ? sounding. But they are high quality picks... I use my V-Picks on a Telecaster (or a Strat). Good match for single coil IMHO.
I haven't. Maybe sometime though. :-)
I like to hold picks very loose so they don't 'snag', not sure how to explain it. Problem is they either fly away or the tip shifts left and right under my fingers. I saw your review randomly and dug up my shark fin i bought when i started. Now i can't hear different sound but after your video i tried it in various ways and i noticed i can hook the 'dip' side of the fin on my index finger it lets me hold the pick loosely for up and down picking, but the shape prevents it from sliding away like every other pick. Not sure if that's the purpose but it works for me 👍
Thanks for telling us about that! I'll give it a try
Triangle picks are my favorite by far
I've had very good experiences when trying them.
Slide your finger over the smooth bit of the pick, it's got more grip than the "grip" part of the pick after using it for just and hour. Basically they've created a lubricated pick, so I'd suggest staying away from this if you want your pick to add grip. Try Dunlop Max Grip if you want a pick with better grip.
Thanks for the tip!
I wish I could do something to help with your hand tremors 😢
Thank you! It doesn't bother me that much. I am used to it now.
Great video. Great advice.
Thank you!
Great Review Scott. I have 5-6 of those 551 picks in my pick box (Heavy). Great Pick... Can't really go wrong with Fender & the traditional Celluloid.
Yes Fender makes great picks! Celluloid was my go to material for years and I still like them
I find 1.00mm Gator Grip triangles are almost “perfectly” versatile for precise alternate picking, trem picking, and strumming. The Gator material is “unslippable” to my hands too. I’d highly recommend.
Thank you for the recommendation! I really enjoyed the Gator grip picks that I have tried so far

Great Review Scott. Always look forward to them..

Music is the best Therapy.., and Cats.
Great Review.... I used that pick quite a bit years ago, and it's a fine pick. The one thing I didn't like was it had more pick noise than say a Delrin or celluloid. I think it's a Polycarbonate material ? if I recall... The 1mm makes less pick noise. It's great if you want an aggressive attack
Hi, I checked the Jim Dunlop website and they say it's made of Lexan. "Lexan® is a registered trademark of General Electric Plastics." A quick Internet search said it is polycarbonate.
Thanks !! It's a great pick. Polycarbonates are Very Bright & Loud. Which is great if that's the sound you're after... To each his own. I like a warmer Jazzy Tone personally.
@@RandallKnight-l1y I agree 100%. I usually have several picks around so I can change depending on the sound I need at the time.
I'm about to get some of these tomorrow i think i like bit picks, i have jazz 3s i think been playing them for some months but lost them and well i never liked something about the feel exactly so time to go to the next extreme and try super big picks ha going to update after maybe 3 weeks if i remember-
Please let us know how it goes :-)
@@earthsteward9 I love it, mostly love the feeling and the downside to it is that i do not like the sound it makes when it hits my strings it is very plastic-y sounding. But i think i am a person who pays a lot of attention to the pick sound more than a lot or maybe most guitarists. I bought a variety pack and liked it the most out of the other 4 or 5 picks, 2 of them were the same size and shape as the ultex but just did not feel as good in my hand. Worth it.
@@JetteIsHollow I didn't notice pick sound so much with ultex picks but I can see it being a factor. I don't like tortex picks because of the feel but then my skin is dry so it feels like chalk to me. I want to try that shape in primetone soon
AC/DC picks ❤Thanks for uploading !
Thanks for taking the time to do these reviews! 🫶
You're welcome!
I just bought the assorted color 12 pack and funnily enough the one I chose to use was the Abalone one too. You are right, it is very beautiful. I had to go for Extra Heavy, because, what's heavier than heavy?... Extra Heavy! I am going to just use the one and try and wear it down like crazy, I haven't done that in a while.
I like looking at them as well. I think some players, including me, like to have an nice looking pick to help motivate them to play more.
thank you!!! very helpful!!
You're welcome!
Been using Tortex flows for a while as my pick of choice, going to try ultex flow picks. I wear through 0.88's pretty fast with lots of aggressive down picking and palm muting. Curious to see how ultem will do.
It is great to try different picks, even if you think you have a great pick already. I liked the ultex picks. I found the tortex didn't work for me but that could be because my skin is very dry.
I'm currently trying to get as many thick picks as possible, and the Flow would be perfect if it were just a tad narrower. I prefer the Jazz III size, but can get along with the Jazz XL sizes if needed, but the width makes the Flow feel a bit clunky. I think I'll stick to the smaller 2.0 Flow and maybe try the Ibanez JTC1 someday too. Have you tried the Ultex Jazz III 2.0 already? This would've been my dream pick. Size, feel, shape and thickness are perfect, but the sound? It's the worst sounding pick I know of. I thought it would be great since the Ultex JIII is the best Jazz III in my opinion, but the rougher edges without bevel make it sound tinny, as if you turned down the mids and upped the treble on your amp. I have no idea who would want such a tone for their sound, be it in metal, jazz, funk, or rock. Thanks for all the reviews! Guitar picks are more important than people may think
Thank you! I haven't tried the Ultex Jazz III 2.0 and I am surprised it sounded so bad. I like Ultex but I have only tried the gauges under 2.0mm
I really like the Chicken Picks but they are very Chirpy 😎🎸🎶☮️
Were they like that after using them for a while? Some are chirpy at first but later on they loose the chirp
@@earthsteward9 the Chicken Picks chirp more than any other pick I own. I gave up on them soon after I bought them
Taylor Thermex picks are too soft and malleable 😎🎸🎶☮️
Thanks for all of your insightful reviews 😎🎸🎶☮️
Thank you!
I find that most of the Pro Plec picks are too soft to hold their shape. Most either come warped or become warped like bowls
I'd like to try them for a long period to see how they work. I've heard that Taylor Thermex Pro picks are made by D'Andrea. I tried the Taylor Thermex Ultra picks and they seemed ok

@@earthsteward9 I think it’s because I used a dollar sign in my comments to you 😳
@@JohnBradt-GuitarMan it could be the reason.
Thank you for putting this together. I also found the Jazz III similar to the Nylpro blue (and the Nylpro Green's to be brighter) but didn't know if it was all in my head because I've always preferred the "grip" and "feel" of holding the Nylpros to the Jazz III. Thanks again.
I haven't done a long term review of them but they had excellent grip when I tried them
Is it just me or is the carbon JIII more durable than the Ultex, whose whole selling point is durability (and a bright tone)? My Ultex last around 2 weeks before the tips start to deform, while the carbon still look the same after almost a month of gallops and alternate picking on 11-64 and 13-74 strings
Thank you for sharing with everyone! I haven't tried the carbon picks yet.
Great Review Scott ! I use the hybrid (Fingers & Pick) Approach for Fingerstyle because it allows much more flexibility. Much more " tone" dynamics with a pick + you have it there for strumming.
I agree! I've done a little bit of playing with both fingers and pick as a guitar teacher had me practice with an Albert Lee solo.
🙏🙏🙏👍👍👍👍
🖤🤍❤✨✨🌻✨✨🌻😎✨✨👍👍👍✨✨🙏🙏🙏
I just came across that same dava pick and I’m liking it a lot. I’m a beginner and have only tried a few different style pics but I mainly use the dava. Thanks for the review! ❤
You're welcome!
I love your videos🎉😅
Best pick ever made. I use 205, more like the Jazz III shape, but you cannot beat the jazztone's 'tone'. There IS NONE! When you pick with a jazztone, you get pure string sound, with very little pick attack. If you LIKE a lot of attack, STAY AWAY from this pick. But if pick noise typically bothers you, get yourself some jazztones, and that will be a thing of the past.
Jazztone has a very warm tone and I liked it as I don't like pick noise. I would like to try one of them for a month or two to really check it out.
Very nice Acoustic 😊 and it does Sound Great !! I have 4 Acoustics (Alvarez, Little Martin, 2 Yamahas).
Do you have a favorite of the 4 acoustics or do they each have qualities you like?
All Different.. but the Alvarez (Steel String) is my favorite.. The Yamahas Are Classical.
Well, strawberry ice cream tasted like strawberry ice cream although I was really surprised if vanilla was still tasting like vanilla and then when we got to the chocolate ice cream well it's still tasted like chocolate ice cream
Great video man 😍
Thank you!
i have the flex 1mm and it has a more midrangey sound compared to the celluloid fender mediums. It feels like you hear less of the pick and more of the guitar. The brigness of the celluloid is nice too! Different tools for different jobs! A painter does not just use one paintbrush!
I agree. It's about the sound you want for the song
That was the best thing I’ve ever seen.
Great Job Man ❤❤❤
Thank you!
The blue 1.0 is my go to now.
I like it as well!
@@earthsteward9 Nice .. u find it even better when it’s worn down a bit..
@@satchrules101 I've never used one that long but I like the sound of them. I normally switch picks a lot. My skin is dry so they are harder to grip. I find the Gator grip ones easier to grip
I can’t believe I’m really liking the blue 1.0 .. after using jazz 3 for a long time .
I like it as well but I have dry skin so it feels like chalk to me. I like the Gator Grips a lot though. It is great you are trying different picks! I used to always play medium celluloids and then started trying different types.
thank you so much i have been looking for thin guitar picks for ages and i was unsure about the sizing but your video has helped me out a ton
You're welcome!
Love your vids man. When I tried this pick (had to order online) it was a little smaller than I was expecting... not necessary a bad thing, I was just expecting it to be bigger. Like you, I am very used to the 351 shape, so anything is an adjustment compared to those. But the Fin is ok.
Thank you! I would like to try them again in the future or have one in my kit in case a song calls for it
