Big Garden Birdwatch 2025 - My results
I've completed my count for the RSPB's Big Garden Birdwatch this year. There's still time to do it if you haven't yet. If you have, how did your results compare? Over a million birds have been counted so far in 2025. I got the national average for magpies and blackbirds, but one more than average for robins.

Do you know the difference between lynx, Scottish wildcats and pet cats?
มุมมอง 63114 วันที่ผ่านมา
Most people can't tell the difference between domestic cats, Scottish wildcats, and Eurasian lynxes. All three species have lived in the UK at some point, but would you be able to identify one if you saw it in the wild? Learn all about them in this video! I didn't intend to finish this video the day two lynx were illegally released into the wild here, but at least now you can learn about what p...

Hi Emily, i too have just found your channel. I live in Bristol, have a small to medium suburban garden. Twentyfive species of bird landed in our garden on the 26th of jan for my bird watch - i was amazed! Its a very 'natural' organic ( as far as i know) garden, with up to twelve local foxes passing through daily/nightly. I leave eggs out for them under the native hedge.

Great to have you here. Amazing that you got so many species during your birdwatch! Are they all frequent visitors? I love to hear about all the foxes that visit people's gardens too. I'm actually currently researching for a long video I'll be uploading on foxes, although I've got a couple of other uploads planned before that comes out.

Hi there. I have just discovered your channel. I used to live in Wigan with a tiny garden. I now have a medium sized garden garden in South Wales which I am trying to manage on ecological principles. Which is a big change, having been a conventional gardener all my life. I do have a lot of birds coming into my garden, but I live out in the hills surrounded by ancient woodland. I`m retired now so I spend a loy of time just sitting watching them.

@@WildlifeWithEmily Yes, I do, but most tend to stay in the woods and don`t come into the garden. An unusual regular visitor is a grey wagtail, as I live very close to the river. And I was very excited to see bullfinches eating the seedheds and then visiting the birdtable. I think they prefer wild food. I have been documenting my wilding progress on my youtube channel and I`m just making a video about the birdcount and about the RSPB stopping the sale of flat feeders because of the spread of disease. It should come out next monday. I`d value your thoughts.

Hi Emily, it’s a shame that your greenhouse was blown away! I did the bird watch yesterday and submitted the results. 4 Wood Pigeon, 1 Robin, 1 Starling. And it just so happened that whilst I was doing the bird watch I also saw a fox wonder into my garden! Apart from your greenhouse, I hope you didn’t suffer any other damage due to the storm. Looking forward to the next video. Take care. 🙂

I can't say I expected four lynx to be released at the start of 2025. I'm definitely watching the situation closely to see if this is a private collector abandoning them or deliberate releases as an attempt to reintroduce the species. Neither option is good for the animals if they haven't been properly prepared and the community isn't on board with the decision in advance.

What's really great is that mink numbers in the UK have taken a dramatic crash. In the 1980's their numbers were estimated at over 100,000, but now their numbers have dropped to an all time low of 40,000. Naturalists have suggested one of the main factors might be the return of the otter to our waterways. Hopefully the reintroduction of Pine martens to the UK will start making a dent in the grey squirrel population.

    • @WildlifeWithEmily
      @WildlifeWithEmily 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

Part of the work I'm currently doing involves the pine marten, red squirrel, grey squirrel dynamic. It's fascinating stuff and yes, seems to be functioning similarly to the otter, water vole, mink dynamic. Just goes to show the balance of species that have evolved alongside each other, and how it can either be thrown off or recovered depending on the invasive species around.

We've had one in our garden since early August and has had one litter. We regularly put out peanuts and cobnuts for it and watching it is a delight. It's best performance was seeing off a hedgehog at least ten times it's size. They now seem to have come to an arrangement where the hedgehog gets it's choice of peanuts first and Mrs Mouse the rest. She nipped out tonight ten times while three hedgehogs were only a few yards away, with no sign of aggression from any party. Keep up the good stuff FF.

I've just seen first hand evidence of the hedgehog-meece treaty. A hedgehog was eating the peanuts while the mouse nipped out three times and took the three cobnuts put out. Again no signs of aggression from either, despite the two being literally face-to-face. It seems to be getting bolder by the day, but whether this is because it has another litter in the nest or because it is stocking up now the colder weather is coming I don't know.

I adore bats so much!!! I'm in Southend-on-Sea, so I barely get to see them. We used to have an absolutely tiny one that patrolled the garden nightly, so my guess is it was a common Pipistrelle. I'd love more than anything to get into bat rescue, and help with rescue and maybe even rehab if I can get into a nicer home. I have such a deep love for them, they warm my heart ✨💖🦇💖✨ my favourite bats are grey headed flying foxes and little black flying foxes, plus egyptian fruit bats.. but I melt when I see micros walking 🥺🥺🥺 I want to learn about our native bats so I can do my best to help and support them until I'm able to do volunteer stuff and eventually rescue. Thank you for such an informative video! You have like the perfect nature presenting voice ☺✨💖✨ i look forward to checking out your other work! *Note:* As an artist myself, I can say your work is just lovely! I saw your other bat video and it looked wonderful! I'm sure you've improved a lot in 3 years! 💖🦇🖤🦇🖤🦇💖✨

Thank you for the lovely comment! Hearing feedback like this really helps spur me on to create new videos :) I hope you enjoy my other videos as well. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you being able to get into bat rescue. One of the easiest ways into the bat world is to volunteer for an ecological surveying company as a bat surveyor (or if you're lucky you may find a paid part time position helping out). That's how I learnt most of what I know about our bats and eventually landed past jobs.

@FeraForus ohhhh, it's probably not going to happen realistically, as I'm autistic with limited mobility and chronically ill lmao, but I'll settle for feeding the fruit bats at the zoo for a bat experience ☺️ but I for sure dream of being able to rescue them, look after them and hold them ✨️🩷🦇🩷✨️. So yeah, it's something that if I wasn't so bloody poorly, I'd do it in a heartbeat. When we can escape our living situation I can work on strengthening my body to help with mobility a bit, work through finding an antidepressant that works properly, join some classes to ease back into socialising, then there's a MUCH better chance I can achieve my dream of helping our tiny friends directly instead of forever daydreaming. It'd be a tough choice between fox rescue and bat rescue as I've loved foxes literally for my whole 39 years on this planet! No matter if I can achieve helping our little fluffy pollinators or not, I'll always support them with donations when I'm able and by joining groups and organisations that help with conservation. I'll be sure to keep the helpful feedback coming, and I apologise for rambling.. it's 02:45am and I'm sooooo tired lol 🥱 take care and have a lovely weekend! 🩶🦇🩶

You were certainly in the right place at the right time Emily. I wish Red Squirrels could be all over the UK. 🙂

In the early 1900s they were. Hopefully with time they can be all over again.
