My Trip to Portugal and Spain after Total Knee Replacement
I hope everyone had a nice holiday and a safe entry into 2020. After time spent in Portugal and Spain where the people, places and food were all great, it was time to get back to work and life in Kentucky.
I'm now 4 months down the road from a left total knee replacement and did pretty well to manage the hilly streets and sidewalks of Europe for 10 days. It was cope and keep up or get left behind so quite the motivation to grin and bear it. I think the time off and training on ancient cobble stones and steps actually seemed to make me stronger when I got home. My range of motion is better on the bike and I feel stronger on the machines vs. just a few weeks ago.
But, my work is not done as just a bit of time climbing a ladder to peel off wall paper set me back with some pain and swelling as we speak.
So, wherever you are in your rehab, you are never really done. As we make resolutions to lose weight and get stronger, we struggle against gravity, and Father Time. But like I've said before, working on keeping our legs strong helps us get to the next destination, the next vacation, the next adventure in life.
I'm looking forward to another trip in 2020 and it may be out west or up in Canada this time. Having a goal gives me that motivation to get to the gym or at least take walks and keep up with my stretching routine.
If you are moving along pretty well post surgery...congratulations! If you feel like you are missing something and need some direction to reach your goals, maybe get back with your PT or hire a personal trainer for a few sessions.
Keep up the good work,
Dr. Z

Life can get a little rough in the days after surgery: The fatigue and mini depression is usually caused by lack of sleep at this stage. Combine that with pain issues during the day and the feeling of dependence can get you down. This phase will pass and talking with your PT and other patients can help you get through. Luckily after this I started watching the old Andy Griffith Show and Opie an...

I’m 59, had surgery 5 weeks ago. ROM is 128/0 and doing well. Still have some stiffness but very happy with where I am.
❤ but we're going too❤ yep
Its been 18 days since my procedure. It was 4 days before my knee woke up. Walking was a series of hops on my right knee. The out come is undecided, everyone says I am doing good but my progress is slow.
I’m 5 weeks out, no cane, one last physical therapy. It’s not fun at all, I’m still stiff and have minor pain.
4 weeks on and still having trouble sleeping but it’s getting better. I take two solpadine and 1 ibuprofen before bed. I can bend my knee to about 100 at times but 90 regularly. I’m working on straightening it I’m down to 4 sometimes and others 10, before I exercise. My scar feels like like sunburn and I don’t like clothes touching it, so as soon as I get home I’m wearing a short dress! Yup…showing off that scar.😂 Today I’m a bit motivated to do a little tidying, I can manage on 1 crutch and sometimes don’t use one around the house but I find I walk more upright with them. Sometimes it’s easier to do things without them. I’m still taking over the counter pain relief. I still have swelling but it’s going down. I get shot sharp pains and my back is breaking from sitting down so much! I’m not regretting the surgery as I was almost unable to walk before it and my life was badly affected. It’s been as tough as hell but I’m feeling much better. I’ve been given another 4 weeks at least before I can get back to work, I will see!
Been a few years now. How's your knee doing?
I don’t have home health got to go to the physical therapy. I’m 8days in and it hurts like hell. I don’t have much motion it feels tight I feel like a failure feel like I’m behind schedule while other people I see on video is running up and down steps. Very discouraged
how are you doing now
Ice Packs %110 Help with the Pain not just the swelling 💋♥️✌️
Cheers for sharing m8 👍👌🏼 it does get tough anyone who sez this don't get to ya is full of crap! ❤ I've previously had 3 knee arthroscopic surgeries on my right knee 👀😬 Now I'm in my 3rd Day @ Home! "Post Total Knee Replacement" I was in Hospital for 4 Nights, 5 Days before arriving at the Motel where I will spend majority of my Recovery to be close to any medical emergency that I may perhaps require however that said, All is well thus far 😉
How are you now
I’m almost 3 weeks post surgery and finally get to start my out patient therapy, I did 2 wks home therapy. It’s interesting how different surgeons do with their patients lol. Mined used glue to close my knee, thank God!
TKR is overrated
Watching this while I’m lying in hospital with my knee surgery. Great inspiration
They stopped my blood thinners in. Just 2 weeks… How are you getting on with physio I still struggle with knee man
Thank you so much! I am having replacement in September.
Same and I am terrified
@@annecarrick8168 I’m working very intentionally at creating a positive experience. Good luck to you.
How long before you can do stuff I kind of sad I feel my summer w daughter will be null because surgery 6/12
I have tkr scheduled next month 6/12 I’m so nervous I was surprised you had a spinal!?! They are doing general anesthesia for me…
Wow not using a cane any more after 5WEEKS. You are what is wrong with the wprld today. Guess what you only have 6 weeks to get range of motion get up and get going.
Wow you should already be working on range of motion and not worry about taking a piss.
who had a TKR? Im having one on Tuesday!
How are you sir??
They let you go home with a IV in your hand 😮 ?
Had both mine done 3 weeks apart. 1st one Jan 25 2nd Feb 15. 12 weeks out from the 1st. Started golfing a few weeks ago. Started slow, played 4 holes just to see how it was going to be. Moved up to 18 holes last weekend, payed for it Sunday though! 😂 Went to a PT session tonight and I’m able to get both past 120 degrees. Still tough though, they do stiffen up on me. But all in all, glad I got them done and slowly getting better each week.
Week 5 and driving…ROM at 110 degrees and 4 degrees. The game ready ice/compression machine was huge for my recovery. Playing my first round of golf tomorrow! Pushing hard on PT, just wish I could sleep better….
I’m about ready to blog I am on day five after my surgery I went home hours after the surgery and I’ve done one physical therapy session and I have two scheduled for this upcoming week. The struggle is real people. When your nerve block wears off which minded in 24 hours, I thought that was the worst pain I have ever been in in my life and I still think that. Make sure you watch my Journey on here. It will be called the dish with Trish and buddy. I hope you’re doing really well.
The first time I had knee replaced it took me 6 months to return to work
im getting knee surgery tmrw this video helps.
It starts to get a little better after 2 months…..don’t despair…..
I’m so I’m so grateful for you to give these videos. In a couple of weeks I’m having a complete knee replacement and I’m really dreading it. But your videos are really helpful. You’re showing details. I really appreciate it. Thank you, thank you, and You Tube! Hope you’re doing well.
Hi Dr Z , How are your Knee after 4 Years ?
Wow, your scar is healing so much better than mine. What did you massage on it?
Excellent video thank you for sharing, just had my second knee done 12 days ago everything's going great
My advice to anyone approaching TKR is 1st get all your dental work done two months prior. 2nd put together a good pain management strategy, what happens after opiates are discontinued? What happens after sleeping aids are discontinued? It’s important to discuss these things with as many people as you can who have been through it… Basically for most folks this will not be a cake walk.
This whole TKR is a doggy buisness
NEVER EVER hold back on pain meds especially so soon after surgery as it will catch you out and make excersise and movement difficult. onset your surgeon for advice. less pain is more gain in first few weeks
Thnk you
Now the hard part pain
I am 4 weeks post op, and some days are as bad as day 3. I am regreting having this done, doctors keep telling everything is alright, some people just have a harder time. Getting in the car is a major ordeal, by the time I get to therapy, Iam done, they can hardly do anything. Every body thinks Iam just a wimp, I have gone thru shoulder surgery, herniated discs, those were a walk in the park. Starting to think the doctor screwed up.
Seven weeks out, still swelling and pain. However, it's getting a wee bit better every day. At four weeks I could barely bend it 90 degrees, today it can go 110.
You are normal. I'm 4 weeks today and I feel like you do
Anyone think it’s odd how Americans use month, day, year ?
No
Will it is.
@@acog6584 lol
Wow… 6 weeks on hydrocodone?
Hate medical care
What is doc stand for how long are you going to stay in the hospital 🏥
I am just starting week 5 and today Nov 22nd 2023 I had no pain, for the first time. I am overjoyed. I've had both knees replaced here in Dublin, Ireland and I have no regrets. You look to be doing well too, good on ya. Great vid.
My dad had his knee replaced 6 days ago. I saw him yesterday and was surprised how swollen his foot was. You could see the blood pooled on the bottom of his foot like bruising. Is this normal? I was thinking he should wear a compression sock. Any advice?
I got my right one fully replaced a year ago on 1st november .my left one is being replaced on 21st November 2023
It takes 3 months for the bone & titanium to bond. 18 months to main healing. Why push it?
Thanks. I'm 4 weeks out and swelling is on/off so sometimes I can bend, other times not so much Sleeping sucks, giving me about 5 hours of poor sleep. I'm off all pain meds since week 2, it's discomfort and not pain that's holding me back
No therapy here doing it myself
way to go! was the clot a result of the surgery?
Of coarse knee replacements are a prime procedure for blood clots
I'm at day 4 post-TKR. Watching videos just proves that everybody😢has their own script. Graduated to a cane at Day 2, no stomach upset, weight bearing is fine. Stull awaiting a bowel movement, but no discomfort. Kudos to my wife for providing drugs at the right time and food to soothe the soul. Not to mention pet care that we usually share. Second in-home PT tomorrow and we'll see what the professional has to say. Thanks for the videos.
