Walt Disney's Barn BBQ Fundraiser Griffith Park 2024
Walt Disney's Barn was the workshop for the backyard railroad at his home in Holmby Hills. The Carolwood Foundation held a fundraiser for Walt's Barn on July 20, 2024 to celebrate 25 years at Griffith Park. Disney Legend Don Hahn interviewed Walt's granddaughter Joanna Disney Miller and her two sons, Nick and Sebastian, and there was also a panel discussing the move of the barn from Walt's home to Griffith Park.

In 1950, Walt Disney built a 1/8th scale live-steam railroad at his residence in Holmby Hills, CA. He operated the “Carolwood Pacific Railroad” for family and friends until 1953 when he shifted his energies into creating a magical place where families could have fun together - Disneyland.
The CPRR center of operations was a quaint red barn that Walt built as a replica of one from the Disney farm in Marceline, MO. The Carolwood barn served as his workshop and he spent many hours here building miniatures and model trains. In 1999, Walt Disney’s family moved the barn he called his “happy place” from his home to the Los Angeles Live Steamers Railroad Museum, of which Walt was a founding member.
Today, Walt’s Barn is a living showcase of Walt’s passion for railroading. Operated by the non-profit Carolwood Foundation, Walt’s Barn is filled with trains of all scales, many of which were donated to the Foundation by his animators and friends that shared his hobby. Many of Walt’s personal items and tools are on display and he even hand-made all of the work benches. Walt’s Barn is generally open every 3rd Sunday of the month from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM, admission is free.

I had one of those playsets when I was a boy and I loved it. I'm doing some important healing work involving that time in my life right now, and all that remained of the playset I loved was a scan of a blurry, faded black and white photo from 1963, so I started searching and found this video! I can't thank you enough for posting it. It's a bigger help than you'll ever know.

10:28 The Wicked Witch of the West my favorite Oz character and my part of the ride. Sadly I didn’t get to go on this ride in 2017, it sadly closed on my visit in 2017.
The Wicked Witch was a pretty good animatronic, and that scene was a highlight of the ride, yes sadly it closed, they should have put Mickey and Minnie in a brand new building.

The Cranium Command entrance also had a different design at that time compared to when the attraction closed in 2007! I believe they changed the design of the entrance and Buzzy’s clothing in 1992 which is also when the pavilion entrance sign was replaced.

@@tokaydiz Pretty much Buzzy originally had a red and blue outfit that was the outfit of the original main character planned for Cranium Command which was changed to Buzzy very late in production and they didn’t have time to update his outfit to it’s final design until 1992! :)

@@212Elevators I will have to check my documentation. It came from a Disney promotional video from 1994, however the footage used was pre-opening as the rug in Act 2 was the NITT one, and the dishwasher bottom was still white. Both of these were changed by opening

Love the interactions of the knotts cast with the guest. Makes the trip more enjoyable BUT do MISS the stunt show. It was my family highlight. Upset its gone.

You wouldn't happen to know the date this was recorded? Everywhere online says this attraction opened in August 1989, but I have my own home video that was recorded on July 10, 1989.
I can't remember exactly when I went to the then Disney/MGM Studios, but Wikipedia says it opened May 1, 1989

It was a mistake closing this ride. I blame those satanic Harry Potter fans for it. This ride was truly one of the greatest attractions in American history.
I agree, this was a realistic, thrilling ride, kind of like a scary Jungle Cruise. The Jaws portion of the Universal Hollywood Tram Tour is lame.
The ride was causing problems for Universal (needing to drain the ride due to gas leaks, the explosion costing them quite a bit of money daily, etc.) There is a rumor that the expansion for the Universal Monsters land in Epic Universe will involve a “Creature from the Black Lagoon” boat ride - let’s hope it’s similar to JAWS but with modern tech that allows for a long shelf life
