Fil-Am Cooking Tutorial : Tortang Talong
In this video, Natasha shares how to make Tortang Talong, an easy and delicious Filipino dish.
A note from Natasha: Cooking has always been an important way for me to connect with my heritage. Though engagement with heritage and culture go beyond the kitchen, I have fond memories of cooking with my mom, dad, sister, and aunties and it's been the way that I show love for people throughout the years. I have also come to view cooking good food as an act of resistance: the ability to showcase ones' heritage in this country in a way that simultaneously connects and nourishes people is humbling and empowering. I hope you enjoy this tutorial, and let me know how it turns out! I also want to mention here that the variations on this dish are as numerous as there are Filipinos so if you have another recipe, please reach out! I'd love to try it out. Happy Fil-Am heritage month :)

This is a great perspective, thank you for sharing. In some ways, I feel like anytime people of different backgrounds interact, cultural exchange is inevitable. We humans are curious and novelty is attractive to us. I don't think many musicians can hear the voice of marvin gaye for the first time and not be inspired to create something with his voice in mind. Likewise, seeing a Dali painting is inspiring as well. I do not think these "passive" cultural influences are a negative thing at all. Now, when someone makes a verbatim copy of art, food, or fashion in order to make a profit without acknowledgement or payment to the original creator, that is wrong. However, that isn't really a cultural issue as much as a general moral issue. Two people of the same cultural background can also steal from each other in this way. I think there is a spectrum of "cultural theft" that spans from simply being ignorant of the history of a piece of culture, all the way to unabashedly claiming that something borrowed from another culture is an original idea of one's own. This is really tricky territory because ultimately, the sharing of culture is a great thing. We just want to make sure nobody is harmed in the process.

Amazingly insightful about mothering for two non mothers!!! Hats off to you both and thank you for sharing!!! Myself, having served as a mother, auntie, grand mother and recently great grandmother plus a school teacher for 29 years, there is just one thing I would like to add...one or both of you may have talked about this but it is , in my opinion, essential to a achieving a happy home!!! Children need to feel that they have an important role to play as a member of the family.....that the well being of everyone is dependent on everyone doing the right thing. It means us stopping to observe our children....finding out what they are good at...allowing them to develop those gifts...if they to eat then they help out in the kitchen...if they are neat freaks then they fold the laundry etc... also that their talents are showcased and celebrated by the family as a whole or they are included in planning family trips or choice of restaurants or movies etc.,, I guess what I am saying is that the children in a home or in a classroom feel that their opinions their thoughts their likes and dislikes matter!!!

Hey all! I (Natasha) want to share what I have learned since we filmed, and released this video. As with many published works, there have been some critiques about Robin DiAngelo's book (White Fragility) and her placement as an anti-racist educator. (For more perspective on this, please refer to @accordingtoweeze on instagram. The link to her video on the topic of White Fragility is here: instagram.com/p/CBhVI5xnhzi/). I will leave it up to you all to make up your minds about if, where, and when DiAngelo and her book have a role to play in our collective journey along the path of anti-racist work. Here are a few more books, written by Black Women, that also touch on the topic of race, anti-racism, equity, and social justice (also recommended by @accordingtoweeze) -White Rage by Carol Anderson - The History of White People by Nell Irvin Painter - How to be Less Stupid About Race by Crystal Marie Fleming
