Power BI Continual Improvement - Jesmond Dene parkrun Power BI updates revealed.
We've upgraded the Jesmond Dene parkrun report entirely now. Everything has been revisited, which is normal within the Power BI Environment. In fact, if you are not keeping your Models "Fresh", they will become stale and less used. You should establish a continuous improvement cycle within your organisation!
Too often, organisations complain that Shadow Analytics is taking over, and people are using Excel or Google Sheets to analyse things that should be using the Enterprise Analytics Platform. That's right, this issue is not unique to the Power Platform. The Power Platform, however, can provide a deep and engaging solution. Businesses change their requirements regularly, and now, especially as Copilot (and other Generative AI tools) becomes more ubiquitous, we need mechanisms that support as much ad-hoc work as possible while protecting the organisational data.
Geordie Consulting has the experience your organisation needs to implement its Internal Centre of Excellence. We can help you embed the principles and governance while bringing more data into your enterprise platform.

Filter Visibility in Power BI
มุมมอง 2921 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
Dump Filters is one of those topics that has proven too big to be covered in another video and too small to be covered in depth on its own. So, this standalone video will bridge the gap. DumpFilters is a capability of DAX Studio from @SQLBI . It enables you to produce a measure that can then be used in reports to present the user with a list of applied filters. In this video, we'll explore why ...
Understanding the Evolution of Your DAX within Power BI Semantic Models
มุมมอง 6021 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
Power BI and DAX do go hand in hand. Power BI is often presented as a one-and-done solution; the lesson from the legacy analytics solutions is that this isn't true. In reality, if you stop progress and progression, your user base starts to self-build new "Shadow" Analytics functions - In the Microsoft platform, this usually is Excel. The meaning here is clear, stop the development of your model...
Power BI Documentation Strategy - End-User Documentation
มุมมอง 14814 วันที่ผ่านมา
Documentation is a vital part of any project. Given that your Power BI reports will continue to evolve, and not all new reports will be created to run against your Semantic Models, realistically, all those that make it into Apps should have some level of end-user documentation to accompany them. In this video, we look at past documentation strategies we have used with clients. Consistency is th...
Unpaq the Engine - Power BI and Vertipaq Analyser
มุมมอง 14021 วันที่ผ่านมา
Vertipaq Analyser is one of the third-party tools of Power BI that seems to be being sidelined a bit now. However, in many ways, it is still one of the most important ones for you to learn. Vertipaq is the name of the Engine behind the scenes of Power BI, and the Vertipaq Analyser is a macro-enabled Excel spreadsheet that can read the metadata of your model and present it in a way that you can ...
Power BI: Preparing Your Report Upgrades
มุมมอง 101หลายเดือนก่อน
Over time, your business will change, and you must update the reporting. This is why we must be aware of the difference between the Semantic Model and the Visuals shared with our users. The capability of Power BI to provide a simple drag-and-drop interface that allows anyone with a licence to build report content differs from legacy reporting tools. The term that first drew us to Power BI was "...

Building PowerApps with CoPilot

PowerApps are a technology well worth investing time in developing the skills in, either personally or within your organisation. The decision to keep using the simpler Excel Spreadsheet was a difficult one, but ultimately is one we would select for a client as well. The complexity needed to replicate the out of the box functionality would just introduce multiple areas of potential failure for the future. Each of which would in essence add to the TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) of the solution. Let us know if you think we made the right call or should we have built that PowerApp?

    How to combine the PBIX files present on 3 different accounts into a one PBIX file ??

    • @GeordieIntelligence
      @GeordieIntelligence 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There's a lot to unpack with that request. If you just want a single view, you can bring all the report content into a single workspace and set up a Dashboard covering them. IF you want to build everything into a single Semantic Model, you can either bring the data together using Dataflows as an intermediary or into a single model... You can copy and paste queries between files using Ctrl + C and Ctrl + V, and then set up the relationships. Measures can be imported using Tabular Editor (2.x works fine), you will no doubt need to tweak them as table or column names may have changed. Our partner consultancy would be able to set up a meeting to get you started. Drop them an email is you are interested office (at) geordieconsulting.co.uk

    Where is the high density sampling?

    • @GeordieIntelligence
      @GeordieIntelligence 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes this video really didn't work as we did it. The high density sampling algorithm in Power BI is locked away. You can see when it is happening and from demos Microsoft have provided it looks to be getting better, but the compromise of a dynamic web based tool was in limiting how many data points it could render reliably. High density scatter plots just don't work as they will always end up dropping some elements (remember maps a really scatter plots), in practice you can use heatspots to get around it, but it is a compromise, in some instances you will lose edge cases that could be statistically interesting or you can lose elements of the "hot spot", there really is no way of configuring the sampling.

    Hi Thanks for the video. But my map is missing parts on my power bi . And I cant figure why. I think it's too detailed

    • @GeordieIntelligence
      @GeordieIntelligence 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Detail is the compromise within Power BI. As you push into more than 1000 datapoints it starts to loose elements (you get an exclamation mark on the visual). Typically this is where the drill feature will help. Use your maps to show numbers at a county, state or country level and then zoom when you drill down to that level show the full map.

Stick with the channel, the new series is finally starting to take shape after a pause for client projects.

    The pipeline facility in Premium is perfect. In the Pro licence world, this management is alot more manual and more prone to mistakes! What's your opinion on separating DEV, UAT and PRD for Thin Reports? Is it necessary, or should we only the methodology to datasets only? For example would you every have an instance of an App that contains both UAT reports and PRD reports?

    • @GeordieIntelligence
      @GeordieIntelligence ปีที่แล้ว

      You've hit the nail on the head with that one. That was exactly what I wanted viewers to get to. Thin reports are too "Volatile" to really wrap a Change Management process around. That said the are also the part of Power BI that organisations new to the platform struggle to comprehend. The majority of clients that I start working with are duplicating their Datasets not even realising that they can use thin reports. Applying your deployment pipeline to these thin reports is just an "Make-work", in the same way connecting a Dev Deployment Pipeline workspace is just going to force you to follow different schedules otherwise you would be deploying against different source systems. Additionally as the final demo shows editing in situ is all too common in the world of Power BI reports as the pressures of delivery bring out bad habits! In Week 5 we'll build a real world example solution, where Data and visualisations are kept separate. so your thin reports exist within another premium workspace (they need to be Premium to access the content of the Deployment Pipeline). Governance of your Deployment Pipeline will then become much more manageable.

    • @GeordieIntelligence

      Wow, there's a question. Technically tenants are supposed to be separate so no, but I've not experimented enough with the B2B functionality of Azure. From what's there it should be possible to set something up. I suspect you may prefer to go down the Dataflow route for that part however and then pull the result into your datamart. 🤔 So directly no, but something can be done using Azure B2B.

    This was a mint demonstration -as always - thank you! The power of dataflows cannot be under estimated. I have one question please regarding Dataflows. I've read the documentation somewhere, how does "daisy-chaining" work?: eg - If I had Dataflow A - and Dataflow B linked A, and done some transformations there. Then Dataflow C loads the results of Dataflow B. I then load Dataflow C into my PBI data model. If I want to refresh data, if refresh A - and then refresh the dataset, will the daisy-chain affect work and automatically update C, or will I ALSO need to refresh dataflow C in order to capture the updates in Dataflow A? sorry for the massive, i hope this makes sense?

    • @GeordieIntelligence
      @GeordieIntelligence 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Daisy-chaining is the process of using a dataflow to feed another dataflow. First off you HAVE to have Premium (Capacity or Per User) to be able to use it, so the Workspace it is in must be flagged as Premium. The main challenge is always getting them to run appropriately, my advice is don't go down this route without setting up Power Automate Scripts to manage them. One of the major benefits of daisy-chaining is the rubbish habit I have of using "Base" tables, if you first Dataflows do the RAW data pull and then the data is curated by the second set of dataflows. Source System --> Extract Dataflow --> Curation Dataflow --> Dataset --> Report (Visualisation) Power Automate has a Dataflow Completion trigger, using a condition on the Output of Status (I'll do a video on this) = Success" then allows you to either trigger the first flow again - for failure - or your curation dataflow - for success.

    Very well explained. The layer cake of PowerBI. In the day-to-day, people often hoy around the term dashboard when they mean report. Making this distinction as you have explained so elegantly is so helpful in understanding the spiders web of data connectivity and sharing/collaboration. Thank you for your continued content. Always look forward to more.

    This lesson has been a massive (even muckle) game-changer. I've been searching far and wide for a decent explanation on how to use ShapeMaps in PowerBI and it hasn't truly sunk in until I seen this video. I have gone from having pants Bing maps with bubble points, to exquisite choropleth maps that show the LSOA boundary details for each Local Authority district of Tees Valley. You have unlocked greatness and I am eternally grateful. Thank you again, looking forward to more content.

      Glad it's been of use. The only thing that's still missing is a graduated legend, but you can't have everything can you 🤔

    Thank you again, indepth, insightful content for real world situations. Could i ask for some guidance/advice? You always have quality filled shape maps, with thr tidy segments. There's nothing oot of the box that's ready to use for UK maps, and using QGIS is abit of a nightmare for the uninitiated (me 😅). Is there a simpler or tidier way of getting nice UK segment shaped maps for data with postcodes/district codes etc? Thank again. Big love for this channel.

      Shape maps are from the shape visual it may still be in preview (it's been there for the last 3 years) There are some supplied with it, but yes you do often have to get creative. New York actually has different shape files for their water towers and Taxis though and the UK is just as bad. You also have to get your data quality nice and high to assign things to the right shape. I'll dig some UK links out to download the shape data and then to make sure it'll work with Power BI

      @@GeordieIntelligence That is extremely kind, cheers good sir. Aye, ive found just trying to make a simple shape map fof the 5 towns/citys of Tees Valley is a nightmare, i have the district codes and postcodes, but i cant find any other way other than QGIS - and their interface is just not intuitive. And there's next to no content online on how to do a UK map for PowerBI. 😔

      @@UlyssesHaq Postcodes are a great start. Typically, there is a delay before new postcodes get added to any documentation, so be aware of that for new build areas. Github has some great repositories. These can be an awesome starting point. Postcodes may be the best place to start and then work on getting a shapefile build and the standardisations needed to make it work consistently. Using Postcodes and their Latitude and Longitude, though, can give you some powerful heatmaps. Postcodes - github.com/Gibbs/UK-Postcodes/blob/master/postcodes.csv GeoJSONs (UK) - martinjc.github.io/UK-GeoJSON/ You then need to validate and check your GeoJSON - mapshaper.org/ Video explaining this (sorry about the audio it was a long time ago) - th-cam.com/video/TZXKtl_8yDM/w-d-xo.html

    Brilliant topic. It raises some very important and even philosphical questions for the analyst. It demonstrates the importance of data-driven culture. Visuals help tell the story, but data is the evidence that supports that story. Question, what is that visual (bottom-right of your report) with the ticket duration, is that a bog standard one, can it be downloaded from the custom viz selections? It looks extremely useful! Thank you again. Really appreciate your content and the new knowledge sharing journey

      Yes that is the process.science process mining visual, there are a couple available for free on appsource. Week 8 will be a conclusion video, but 9 - 15 will be exploring KPIs and measurements, process mining will be included in that as it is a real game changer. Glad you enjoy the videos, be sure to tell your colleagues about them!
