    Having many hours in scribing, and EMT definitely do count, you just need to be able to take away meaningful lessons that you can write about. It's so much less about what you do than how you write about it. I got 22 interviews and 7A's with basically no research and a huge emphasis on volunteering (kind of generic things, but I think I wrote about them well). I think your advice might only be relevant at esteemed academic institutes. A lot of schools care about having holistic students more than people who have checked all the boxes.

    That's the thing that probably contributed to my struggle of getting in- those darn 3 P's. I enjoy helping people, but I could care less about serving a certain population in particular. I was not jumping out in my personal statement and secondaries to help anyone in particular (and this was back in 2021). Then again, I admit I have some antihumanistic and nihilistic opinions that I try to keep to myself- someone dies in the USA every 12 sec or something like that, hate is rampant, but the world goes on. I'd go on to barely get in, and that's nice. Then again, I am against the notion that doctors have an obligation to help certain people even though adcoms demand it. Major flaw in the system I strongly oppose- we are not responsible for complex social problems in society.

    Academics are still the most important. if you have capacity for scoring 520+ on mcat focus completely on that + some side experiences (which should be energizing rather than feeling like obligation). No one really cares if you are the most passionate person for Latinx queer health if you can't score above 510 on mcat.

    • @jadieeee
      @jadieeee 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I definitely feel like this isn't true... Academics is a (large) but partial piece of the whole pie. If you're applying to a program that serves or focuses on a particular community, you should be highlighting and proving you have lived experiences as a member of xyz group or are passionate about serving that community if you aren't. You can have perfect metrics but if you aren't fit to their mission, why would that school even consider your application?

    • @MichaelMinhLeMD
      @MichaelMinhLeMD 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I think there are semblances of truth on both sides here. I think there are many programs that DO care if you're the most impactful, most passionate person for Latinx queer health. I can recall 3 exact premeds in the last cycle that ended up at fantastic programs like UCI - LC Prime, UCLA and UCSF Prime-US with < 510 MCAT scores off the back of their excellent narrative. On the other side, building an excellent narrative is equally (if not harder) than earning a 520+. There are many premeds I've seen who shoot themselves in the foot with a 3.48 GPA / 505 MCAT. I think this discussion is helpful both ways. I agree that both are important, but there is nuance here!

      if you are interested in that population specifically and can support how that experience really drove you to medicine (and is subsequently backed up by your work & activities), then absolutely! I find that most premeds however write about a sick grandparent and all of their W&A have nothing to do with that story at all.

I took a gap year between high school and college to help support my family. Is that gap year looked apon negatively? If so is there anything i need to do to be a more competitive applicant that those who did not take a gap year dont?

    Thank you for the information! I am a current freshman in college and plan on applying to medical school Spring 2026 since I will be graduating May 2027. The research experience explained in the two better applications seem like graduate level experiences so I wanted to ask if these students applied to medical school after 4 years of undergraduate college or did they take gap years? What I am wondering is how they were able to get high level research positions as sophomores or juniors in college (as is in my understanding from the timeline of their application). Thank you!

    Previous videos and emails instructed me to build a central theme that express my passions and reasons to pursue medicine. This video tells me to not focus on a central theme but to scatter impact across different extracurriculars. How do these two fit together?

    • @MichaelMinhLeMD
      @MichaelMinhLeMD 29 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hey Kevin, This is extremely insightful. Fantastic question. I see competitiveness in a tiered system. Above all else is impact. The #1 predictor of success in medical school is success as a premed. If you have serious impact - even if it's scattered across different extracurriculars - that gives you a proper chance no matter where nor when you apply. Now, to your second point about this application being scattered. There is considerable overlap between his extracurriculars. He does basic science liver research. He presents keynotes at Hepatitis C conferences. He does community service for the Asian American community (the demographic that got him interested in liver disease in the first place). That's community service, basic science and academia work all in this central theme of Asian / liver health. Yes, he has extracurriculars outside of this central theme but most importantly, the impact in those individual extracurriculars are apparent and the cohesion feels genuine. Lastly, if the goal is to develop impact, we have found it most helpful to align your extracurriculars around a central theme. If you really enjoy one thing over others, chances are that you'll spend more time there. Chances are that you'll develop skills faster there. Chances are that that time and skills will directly translate to impact. Finding what you care about is a reasonable precursor to making impact. In short, impact above all. Central themes may help with making you more impactful. Hope this helps! :)
