DIY Ammo Can Fire Pit Lessons Learned and 1lb Tank Test

I share some learnings gained while making a DIY ammo can propane fire pit including the time, cost, and whether I’d do it again or just buy the real Lava Box. I also test how long the fire pit can run on a “green” 1lb propane tank and reveal how little I remember from Chemistry class.

    I appreciate your comments about the oxygen/soot balance and the rocks/radiant heat. Thanks for posting both videos.

    How well do the poles hold up to the radiating heat from the skottle?

      No issues with the ski poles. I upgraded to some really strong, telescoping legs off of an old tripod and they have been great.

    Thanks for putting the vid up, good job! It's good to see you use the Dumond stripper, it is the "good stuff." As a professional who specifies things like that for commercial use, it is what I use and specify. Dumond makes other strippers that can be easily found by searching for "Peel-Away Stripper," and you just have to select the right stripper for industrial metal coatings. The key to successful stripping is the "wetted" strip duration, which means that the stripper (all strippers) need to be applied thick enough and then be encapsulated in a close-fitting poly (PE) bag that keeps the stripper moist. The next key is that the stripper needs to be left to do its work for 8-12 or more hours before you go scrape it off. If the stripper dries out, then you need to apply more fresh over the dried out stripper, and let it sit for an hour or so before scraping/wiping off. Yes, the 8-12 hours (overnight) is lengthy, so go do something else productive while you wait and the concept of labor-saving will become clearer!

    Do away with the u-bolt and just drill holes for the end of the turn buckles into the wind deflector.

    thanks for the extended review. I was wondering if the hose might get hot and melt, but sounds like you havent had any issues like that.

    To keep the 1lb going. You have to tip it upside down, and or elevated higher.

    Do you have problem with hose melting off connection to box??

    • @cdvgear
      @cdvgear 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have not had that issue. It uses all the parts that came with the burner kit so everything should be able to handle the heat.

    This is the only video I found addressing how much a pain it is to strip the paint. Thanks for the tip on the steel brush bit, that was a much better solution. Just finished mine and it came out great.

    While my weapon of choice is a flattop griddle I am glad to see your build as the price for a plow disc cooker is stupid high For the adjustable legs ya may want to check makerpipe as the have some threaded inserts for conduit that may make it even simpler

    ive seen this problem before, in my campsite, had a smart guy with me, and he filled a pot with water and dropped the green tank in the water put a rock on it and bam no issues, the cold acted as a temp sink and kept the green bottle from freezing

    How much run time do you average using the 5lb tank.. also 1 lb tank

    • @cdvgear
      @cdvgear 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It depends on how high you crank up the flame but I average about one pound per hour at my preferred level. There is a Goldilocks point where it’s putting out some heat and not hissing too loud.

    You can buy the Tacticool DIY Kit its $50 then harbor frieght ammo can $16 then $7 spray paint I have everything else, so hopefully around $75 when im done!

    • @cdvgear
      @cdvgear ปีที่แล้ว

      I wasn't aware of @tacticoolfirepits when I started this project. Thanks for sharing! The DIY kit would still require the DIY-er to strip the paint off of their ammo can(my biggest point of frustration when I made mine). Maybe there is a market unpainted (or stripped) ammo cans to go with the kits.

      @@cdvgear true, im currently in process.of stripping mine, I'm in no rush and taking my time with it, but it is a pain in the ass. I've seen a lot of videos where most people don't even strip the paint they just paint over it after quick sand

    • @cdvgear
      @cdvgear ปีที่แล้ว

      @@echols2010 It's probably fine to just put the high-heat paint over the existing basecoat but I was wanting to be extra cautious to not expose my kids to any toxic fumes. Good luck! Burn bans are starting to kick in where I am so mine has been getting a lot of use.
