Erratically sharing my digital room correction experiences and expertise here.
The hobby is to chase better sound and I also do some listening during the chase.
You will learn many tips and tricks for the Room EQ Wizard aka REW, rePhase, Audyssey as well as state of the art techniques for both stereo and surround systems correction and equalization including Dolby Atmos. I use a Marantz SR6015 in my home theater system and use Roon for stereo music listening. Most Audyssey and multichannel techniques can be applied to all Denon & Marantz models. Manual calibration techniques can be applied to most surround receivers including Yamaha, Onkyo, Pioneer, and Sony.
Please note, I'm not particularly amused with video editing, and English isn't my mother tongue, so please excuse any lack of polish in the presentation. However, I'm confident you'll frequently discover content that is extremely interesting and unavailable elsewhere.

I got a UMIK-1 mic for Christmas. I just finished watching parts 1 & 2 and am overwhelmed! I need a simpler video on how to use my mic and REW so I can create the files and use NEURON. For now, I will create a new ADY file using my Marantz SR8015 Audyssey mic. Its going to take a few more views of part 2 before I can figure out how to use REW and mu UMIK-1 to calibrate my system.
Unable to locate 'Transfer optimized calibration to receiver.bat' file on your Google Drive, where to locate this? pls advise
Please include support for Denon S760H and S770H models 7.1 Atmos
They are supported since 1.6, do you have a specific problem?
@ocaudiophile i use .ady file to simplify my process to optimize callibration, i got final optimized file in .oca format, is there a way to generate this final output file in .ady and transfer it on my Multeq mobile app? since i did this for a family member there AVR is not in my place to transfer it over the cmd promt step you have shown in the video. Thanks I did the above for Marantz Cinema 60, later this week i will do the same for my Denon S770H. I need help with using as well generating the final output file in .ady format please
So what’s next OCA? We’ve gotten so used to regular releases, which was simply incredible over the Christmas period. My system sounds amazing! But I saw your comment about filters not working in 1.6. Is there a wishlist you’re working towards?
There's always "better" ;)
Hello, why am i getting the error SW2 is missing in configuration list? I added a 2nd sub onto 4800 and did directional measurements on the multeq app. my measurements are sw10 to 17 and sw20 to 27
Is thereva Wayne to convert oca to ady?
Thanks for the input, but you can remove the subwoofer, not all of us have a sub and I have to generate it automatically or how can I make it not ask for a subwoofer or central speker. I have a 4.0 sistem
Thanks for the input, but you can remove the subwoofer, not all of us have a sub and I have to generate it automatically or how the hell can I make it not ask for a subwoofer
I ran the 1.6 script with "Remove Marantz Sound" and "Enable LFE + main" set to false. The script gets stuck on [INFORMATION] Analyzing alignment at 20 Hz...[0%]. Is this normal? For information, the script runs correctly with "Remove marantz Sound" and "Enable LFE = main" set to true.
I had the same problem. I did a new measurement with 3 points and it worked. The not working measurement with the same 20hz was a 8 point. I can't tell you if it was the measurement in general or the 8 points.
Hey OCA, is it normal that i get '11:09:06 AM [IMPORTANT] SW1: 2.87m (9.42ft), polarity inverted? true' for my sub, but in the rew neuron results sw1filter impulse is the same as all other filters which have 'polarity inverted? false' ? Also the predicted and original sw1 response seems of the same direction...
Your sub must be inverted in REW as well and its filter is different to others ie starts with a negative number...
@@ocaudiophile Yes thats what i thought, the impulse peak of the filters should have been different than the others, but its not... Should i try anything else to troubleshoot this?
Cross cor allign and Vector allign are all missing in the new versions. Where do i find them? How can i use them now? Nothing is documented on there webside
Many thanks for your knowledge, and the presetation of how to do it.😊
Many thanks 🙏

Hi Serkan... Everything worked as a charm and a definte upgrade to the musicality of my HT, the Sub is tight and accurate and sounstage just perfect.. My learnings : 1) If you have the stock Audyssey Mic create the ADY file using Neuron and dont go the manual REW measurements somehow stock mic doesnt work well with REW 2) For me Harmon curve works the best... Thanks again all fearures of Neuron is working perfectly...
This may be a silly question but on the REW program i dont have an API tab, how do i gwt one?
You need to download the Beta API version.
@TheOneMonk Thank you!!!
Great work OCA! I am upgrading from A1 EVO to Neuron. I got my .avr file, did my .ady extraction, but I cannot locate any .mdat file that I need to load into REW to start optimization. Any suggestions welcome. Thanks!
You don‘t have to locate the mdat file, unless you want to use a formerly saved mdat file. Use the ady file extraction for optimization by the script and transfer the oca file back to the AVR.
@@TheOneMonk Thanks @TheOneMonk! That worked! I already notice the fabulous sound....esp the directional sub improvement. This program is genius!
Thanks for your great work!
I just ran my first A1 Evo Neuron calibration with the A1 Neuron curve, and wow, THANK YOU. There’s a number of settings on the main html calibration tool about boost min/max, lfe+main on/off, etc…. What should these settings be?
Try default settings first. Let your ears decide if you need more bass
Hi, works great! Thank you very much for all the effort. Just one question: When I upload the original calibration .ady file with "upload calibration" and open the downloaded extracted measurements, there is a _micCal.txt file included in the .zip file. When I run the optimization and look at the response data of the generated master.ady file, I see the inverted _micCal SPL response instead of the flat "perfect speaker" response. Is this intended? Looks to me like a double mic correction since the response data in the .ady is after mic correction already. So should be flat. Another question: is there a way to add own PEQ filters for the various channels before generating the optimized .ady file in order to correct known speaker imperfection?
this seems like a great tool, but it just doesn't work for me, no matter how many different ways I try. The subs are always summed when using the mobile app, which is the only way to get the actual .ady file. So i get the message to measure them with "odd.wtf measure -b". When I do that it measures the speakers and then fails to retrieve the response when it gets to the SW1. Measurements position 1 failed! Message origin is 0 but only 1 is expected! !! Unrecoverable error. Must abort measurement. No measurement positions completed. Will not write anything to file. I have tried this no less than 10 times and come up with the same thing every time. I have rebooted the PC, the Marantz 7706 and swapped mics. I'm glad its working for others, I can see alot of work has gone into this. Keep up the good work. 👍
It might be related to something specific to your pre-amp model. Can you try "odd.wtf measure -b -d" and share the produced debug.txt file with me? PS Make sure you have the latest odd.wtf version in YT video link with which you no longer need to use "-b" with measure tool.
@@ocaudiophile how do you want me to send you the debug file?
@@skippyturtle1 you can use google drive links here
Wow it’s taken me about a month to get the script working for me but it was worth all the head scratching 😂thank you OCA you are a true gentleman 😃😃
I got everything dialed in pretty well except that my distances are off. I seem to remember you saying all updates need to up changed in the script but I don't really know how to do that. Are distances in that or should I just update them in the AVR after uploading the .oca file?
The distances are used for alignment and do not represent the the real distances (because for timing it is irrelevant if speaker1 is 3m and speaker2 is 4m away or if it 1m and 2m because the relative distances need to be good and they do not correspond to the distance tweeter to MLP only but can also be change due to cable length, DSPs etc.). There is absolutely no reason to change these except when measuring the sub response and adapt the calculated timing with the measured timing (if want to do it THAT exactly ;) ).
Which target curve is best for my room, receiver Denon x4800h, Dali oberon speakers and an atmos 5.1.4 system. My bass settings after rew measurement and sending to my avr is 5 to 8 db +, is this normal?
that is all ok. neuron is the best TC for me so far. i have also a 4800 and dal speaker
Do we think the manufacturers will ever block this mechanism via a firmware update? I’ve turned off auto updates just in case!!
... for what reason should they do that? this option makes the avr's better... there is no harm for any technical part. the only thing that is missing is a job for this dude. if i was the ceo of audyssey... oca would have allready been working for me in a leading position😂
Audyssey must receive an income for letting marantz and Denon use their software. Neuron is fabulous but already has forced the manufacturers to advise against it. Just think it’s a natural step.
@@SeanGreensmith-i3pthat‘s why I‘d prefer the Audyssey app to transfer Evo generated optimizations.
Hi Mr Oca, first of all congratulations for your amazing work. I'm trying to use the new version 1.6 with identical xover and NotDrToole curve but the script stops at INFORMATION Analyzing alignment at 20hz... (0%). If I try without the identical xover it works fine. I'm using the latest REW. Hope you can help me out with this
You just need to restart REW and retry. That error randomly comes and goes from REW alignment tool.
@ocaudiophile you have by any chance the previous version of rew? The beta 66 instead of the 67? You original video was with the 66 but then they release an updated. Wondering if this may cause the issue
Once the calibration file is sent to the AVR, can I use Audyssey MultEQ phone app to transfer the calibration file saved to Preset 1 in the receiver to my phone? If YES, Will it save to my phone as an ADY file?
Neuron is not compatible with Phone App anymore because some calculations are done by odd tool for the new filters.
@ all I want to do is transfer/copy the file to my phone, you are saying the phone app cannot copy the file from the AVR to the phone?
@@rafacq the phone is out of the chain - the optimisation needs the odd tool that is provided by Aaron. That it the only valid way to get the avr file needed (or you buy multEQ-X License for windows) and transfer the oca file to the AVR. Neuron does not and cannot use or supports the app anymore due to the new more complex filters.
V1.6 Am using TC evo Neuron increasing bass to 6dB and bass fill by 1dB. Denon x8500h is spot on using LFE + Main. Have 2 SVS PB1000 with slightly different distance of 2.5metres(ish). Even though polarity is known, Neuron inverts one with sw1@ 2.5m and sw2 @ 7.2m inverted. Weird but sounds amazing. Big appreciation to OCA and team. Had massive issues prior to 1.6 with dual subs so was using a splitter and one sub output. Was good but 1.6 was worth waiting for. Love I can use odd.wtf or mqx.
Error with latest version V1.6: Process starts, gets to the 'reverse the AVR 250Hz LPF' step, when REW makes about 100 copies of a measurement called "A times B", then fails with the error. 9:25:39 PM [ERROR!] An error occurred while processing measurements: Error: Network response was not OK! Using Beta 66 and Beta 67. Chrome and Firefox.
Do you have fix mdat file in the script folder?
@@ocaudiophile That did it. Thank you for the super quick reply! I missed that as being a required new file somehow - never had to use the mdat. Appreciate you!
sorry if this is a stupid question, but I generate a .avr file for use, but there is never another mention of the file and how to optimize it.
the avr file is the configuration file that is used as the first input for the script which tells how many speakers, which speakers, which model of the avr is used and so on. So you only need it to initialize the script and then the measurements are used for optimization and the filters and levels are summarized in the oca file which is post-calculated and transferred via odd tool.
Hi there, I am receiving this error: [WARNING!] Imported measurements in REW are missing data for each of the 2 subwoofers in your system! [WARNING!] Repeat measurement process with 'odd.wtf measure -b' 'directional bass' mode hack (will work with your reciever model). [ERROR!] A1 Evo Neuron cannot optimize your system without individual measurements for each subwoofer! It worked flawlessly with the A1 Evo! I have 2 subwoofers.
I got the same error
So why not follow the instruction? you probably used audyssey to measure your SWMIX and that is not enough. Multi-Subwoofer intergration was massively updated so, it is okay what worked a long time ago but new method needs more measurements for a better result (if your old result suits you then use it)
So after many days of calibrations im closing in on my final runs......one thing is that i cant choose LFE+MAIN before the script starts?I tried with ady file that had all speakers small w sub and also one with fronts as large before adding to REW for processing.....still cant change the slider????
Hm, I am bit lost. The old ady file (newer measurements are typically made by odd tool (with avr file extension) using with standard mic or directly in REW with UMIK-1/2 +odd gen) tells the script wich speaker (LCR FHR etc) you have and therefore which naming it has to await in REW for the measurements. The evaluation, if your system is "LFE+main" capable is based on the response at 80 Hz and lower by means of "does it make sense". What configuration your receiver model supports is checked based on the entry of the model in the avr file. So, with a quick view into the script, it looks like you probably have a model that does not support this option so it is greyed out. Can you confirm if or if not you are able to select LFE+Main in your receiver itself (not the script) and tell us what AVR you have?
@carstenc3582 I do have a Denon x2600h, it has life+main option....but yes, after running calibration I choose small+sub on the App,perhaps I'll try and change them to large as Audyssey suggested fromt he beginning and then send it to my PC and load it into Neuron...I'll give it a shot, thank you 🙌
OCA , one quick question . Is it better to measure the individual subs on the receiver with the respective output (AVR 2 sub out - 2 subs connected) , or just one sub connected and the other (s) daisy chain , connected in line ? Measurements made with REW and UMIK 1 ? The last Neuron (19.01.2025) really works better, i feel the bass now
all subs to AVR if possible...
Hi OCA, thank you for efforts! I appreaciate this a lot! I tried to start the (maestro) script and it says that it can not run because I have no subwoofer. Is there a possibility to use Audyssey One without a subwoofer?
Sorry but no way to run without subs.
Hi there! Using the 1.6 Neuron with AV10 and three (different) subs, sound is quite good. But when inspecting the .oca/json I am wondering why the filter settings are exactly the same for all three subs? I would expect individual filter settings as each sub has an individual output? Sub-distances seem to be reasonable. Neuron was feed with .ady measurement set to directional bass. Any ideas?
Individual filtering doesn't sum up as good as applying one filter to all. Also they can sometimes be different if one of the subs need to be inverted.
@@ocaudiophile, thanks for your effort! Any chance top get an option for individual filters? My front subs have a large resonance at 70Hz and are limited to >30Hz, whereas the sub in the back has no resonance at 70Hz but can run down to <20Hz.
Quick question OCA: What type of measuring pattern do you recommend with the Audyssey app for neuron? Standard 8 point or is there something else i should do... for example like 101 or a pattern like secrets of audyssey recommends? Thank you in advance!
There's no magic formula to that and depends on how listeners are positioned around MLP and how many of them there will be. For single listener at MLP even one measurement could be enough but Neuron processes multiple mic positions better than previous Evo versions. Try to stay within 60cm around MLP, make sure first mic position is centered precisely and keep mic vertical and at ear height for all positions and take as many as you wish (limit should be around 25 mic positions). That should give you good results.
@ocaudiophile Thank you for your quick and precize answer👍
@@ocaudiophile Serious question, is it helpful to have so many mic positions possible, but them be limited to ~60cm around MLP (which in a real room is basically nothing)? Is it not expected that users take measurements at each sitting position on a couch (which may be 2-3m across), or throughout a room? If a 200Hz wave is over 1.5m length, do we not need to measure over greater distances to make sure you're not adjusting for a single position null or resonance?
@BenBayliss1982 You can go as far as you need to, Neuron has a special algorithm that weighs measurement distance to MLP to determine final response. However you can either have a great calibration at MLP or a good calibration in a larger area but not both simultaneously. Room can be made truly minimum phase only at a single point.
Thanks to the new information and updated version, I wanted to redo the calibration with the LPF + Main option for my home theater setup (Denon AVR-X4400H). I performed new microphone measurements using the new odd.wtf script to get measurements for SW1 and SW2 since my receiver natively does not support this feature. When I finished, everything worked great in Neuron, but I got error code 1: "loading final filters." while transfering settings to receiver. Then I redid the calibration using the old measurements I had, and this resulted in the following message in Neuron: 10:03:07 [WARNING!] Imported measurements in REW are missing data for each of the 2 subwoofers in your system! 10:03:07 [WARNING!] Repeat measurement process with 'odd.wtf measure -b' 'directional bass' mode hack (will work with your receiver model). 10:03:07 [ERROR!] A1 Evo Neuron cannot optimize your system without individual measurements for each subwoofer! I understand this message except for the "measure -b" part. Can you elaborate or explain this for me, please?
That error is because you don't have individual measurements for each sub in your old measurements. I double checked and 4400H can measure each subwoofer separately with "odd.wtf measure" tool and you will not need to swap subwoofer cables. In the odd version uploaded this morning, you don't even need to add -b to the command just make sure your have both subwoofers listed in speaker configuration before you run odd. And Neuron should process the ady file generated correctly. The transfer error is strange, could just be a temporary network problem and you should just re-try. If problem persists let me know...
@@ocaudiophile Wow, again you are a beast!!! re-try transfer worked :) I feel like this dude calling printer support, and support says: "Well, have you tried restarting the printer?" Anyways, Thanks again!!!
Thanks for your dedicated effort and support. A game changer.
Thank you so much!
You have commented out all-pass filters in version 1.6, why is that? Was there some kind of a problem with them? In my config, they helped to smooth out some dips around XO frequency.
They may add group delay to some frequencies the way they were implemented but they will be back soon
Hi very much appreciated for the time that you put in to do this. Can I give a request?? To create a video from start to finish, including setting up the microphone (90 deg or horizontal, you have different videos stating different things), placement, measurement settings and step by step instructions without any explanation or jumping around to different areas. Just step by step the way you would do it without an audience. This way we can follow along step by step. The lengthy explanation )(though extremely beneficial for us to understand why you are doing what you are doing and what the results are) make it very difficult to replicate the steps on our side. Again, not to complain because you are giving invaluable information. anyway you can make a straight forward video, start to finish, step by step, would be incredible
Applied the Neuron script today with Denon AVR and 5.1.4. setup. Total gamechanger. It‘s actually shocking when I switch between speaker presets Audyssey app vs A1 Evo Neuron optimization: It’s such a noticable improvement! There are some surprises regarding crossovers, e.g Fronts are now set at 120hz crossover (despite two woofers each) while lesser equipped Surrounds are set at 40hz. And sub was boosted with +7,5 db which I had to reduce a bit. But what matters is the overall sound experience. And it’s just amazing! For 3D as well as 2ch stereo. Thank you Oca! Question: Do you have a Patreon site?
I tried this and removed the minidsp did sub 1 and 2 directly to the denon for measuring in REW manually, I assumed the best way is to unplug one sub at a time and run the "SWx" atmos sweep, name the file "SW1" and then plug in only the other one, replay the file and name it "SW2" was that the correct thing to do OCA? The final product seems to measure well after calibration upload
the bass is a bit too much for me though i think i might rerun it with a different target curve (I used "TargetCurve_MJ" which seems to basically be a harmon +10?)
Sounds right. If it sounds great... what is your question then ;) OCA explains the measurement process in his last video concerning Nexus (Part II). If you not sure that you done everything accordingly, you might want to check out that vid.
@carstenc3582 he didn't explain measuring individual subwoofers from what I saw The sweep folder he had contained 'SW1' and SW2' files The one available contains 'SWx' I assume I measured correctly but I'm just asking...
Not sure if this has been asked but will biamping front speakers cause any issues with neuron?
I do this and think it doesn't matter. Basically if it worked with Audyssey it will work with the script. Pre-outs send the signal as 1 channel so if you are splitting that signal to multiple amps it boils down to if they are gain level matched to begin with as Audyssey will just hear whatever the speaker is outputting as a mono channel.
Great sounding acripts! Confrats! How can I introduce aditional filters considering I know how to use Rew? I have close measurements from the speakers with some issues to be be corrected at mid / hights. Will be very helpfull to be able to introduce them in addition to the low end that evo creates. Thank you in advance!
No easy way. You need to run the script in Chrome inspect mode and add a breakpoint under generateFilter function and during the pause, you can try adding your own EQ filter in REW then continue the script.
@ocaudiophile the procedure with chrome sounds familiar. knowing the point where to stop the scripts I will make some tests. I let you know if I have further questions or even feedback with great results!! Thank you;)
Quick question. Dual sub setup, both the same. Think I’ve got them in a good position after using REW. Does neuron do everything else - timing, phase etc?
How can I convert the oca output file back to ady so I can change them on the fly within the MultiEQ app?
You can’t do this with neuron. It works very differently to MJ and earlier.
Hi OCA. Everything is working with 1.6 and Evo Neuron curve. It sounds good as always but i was wondering about the trim levels in the final result and if it's considered safe and if there's a way to limit them because what i try with the sliders doesn't seem to work. I'm using an X3800 with an external 5 channel 200w @8 ohm (350w @ 4ohm) amp and 2 SVS subs that can do 350w. The C, SL and SR are efficient Klipsch floorstanders and center (both 8ohm 98db) and power hungry Elac fronts that are 6 ohm 86db. In Audyssey the fronts are about -1.5, the C is -7.5 and rears are -11 and -7. The subs are -5.5 and -5. After running 1.6 the trim levels are now 2:45:20 a.m. [IMPORTANT] Speaker FL: +5.0dB 2:45:21 a.m. [IMPORTANT] Speaker FR: +5.5dB 2:45:21 a.m. [IMPORTANT] Speaker RHL: +0.5dB 2:45:21 a.m. [IMPORTANT] Speaker RHR: +0.5dB 2:45:21 a.m. [IMPORTANT] Speaker SBL: +1.5dB 2:45:21 a.m. [IMPORTANT] Speaker SBR: +1.5dB 2:45:21 a.m. [IMPORTANT] Speaker SLA: -8.5dB 2:45:21 a.m. [IMPORTANT] Speaker SRA: -5.0dB 2:45:21 a.m. [IMPORTANT] Speaker C: -4.0dB 2:45:21 a.m. [IMPORTANT] Speaker FHL: +1.5dB 2:45:21 a.m. [IMPORTANT] Speaker FHR: +1.5dB 2:45:21 a.m. [INFORMATION] Final target level:: 73.69dB 2:45:21 a.m. [INFORMATION] Alignment accuracy: ±0.14dB 2:45:21 a.m. [INFORMATION] Calculating optimal subwoofer volume offset... 2:45:21 a.m. [INFORMATION] Available range: -11.5dB - +11.5dB 2:45:22 a.m. [IMPORTANT] Final subwoofer volume: 9dB. With the powerful amp is it a problem running the fronts at the +5 to +7 it often assigns, especially when the other speakers are so low in comparison when drawing current? Also the subs are generally assigned +9 to +12. I do have a dip on one sub but regardless the almost max level adjustment has me worried i will overload or clip the sub. I guess my question is although the settings seem high by conventional standards is your script doing magic behind the scenes to compensate for this using filters where it's 100% safe, or should i use caution?
It's 100% safe and setting FL +12 and AVR volume at -25 is the exact same thing as setting FL 0 and AVR volume -13. The AVR btw automatically adjust maximum volume of the unit based on individual speaker volumes and filters and will not let you go higher than a certain level so you don't need to worry about that. External amps add a certain risk but your figures don't look like that. Neuron typically runs subs a bit hot but filters them so the final level is always on target.
@@ocaudiophile thanks, makes perfect sense.
hi and thank you so much for making my system come alive!!! Question....When prompted to change "isReversePolarity ticked (true)" in json editor........(as my sub is only capable of 120hz +-3db and A1 reported it as 250hz,ok Audyssey did) Where do i change it? Because there is so many channel numbers in the text, is it the first one thats in the beginning of the text file: (Highlighted with space and THIS???) "Elac debut new ","targetModelName":"Denon AVR-X2600H","interfaceVersion":"00.08","dynamicEq":false,"dynamicVolume":false,"lfcSupport":false,"lfc":false,"systemDelay":261,"adcLineup":2.115000009536743,"enTargetCurveType":1,"enAmpAssignType":8,"enMultEQType":1,"ampAssignInfo":"0802010200010000010002000200200001001000200010000100200002081008080200010203040600010000","auro":false,"upgradeInfo":"None","dolbyVersion":0,"subwooferNum":"1","subwooferMode":"N/A","subwooferLayout":"N/A","detectedChannels":[{"enChannelType":0,"isSkipMeasurement":false,"delayAdjustment":"0.0","commandId":"FL","trimAdjustment":"0.0","channelReport":{"enSpeakerConnect":2(THIS==???,isReversePolarity":false=============)-,"distance":3.45,"customEnSpeakerConnect":2},"responseData": THANK YOU AGAIN!!!!!
i managed to change it in json editor, changed both to 120hz manually and ticked the true box but A1 still reports it as 250hz.....what gives??
