It's not mentioned here, but it has been suggested that Dalkowski was mildly mentally retarded (or at least lower IQ). Once Earl Weaver tried to simplify things for him and to not overthrow he did somewhat better.

In 1995 I was working as a vemdor at a baseball trade show in Anaheim, Cal. After the show closed for the evening, a bunch of us vendors visited the hotel bar where I found myself seated next to the former MLB umpire Paul Pryor. I knew who he was and had seen him umpire on TV but things didn't get friendly until a few drinks flowed. He was an easy chat. At one point, I asked him, "Who's the fastest pitcher you ever called behind the plate?" Without a moments hesitation, he responded. . "Steve Dalkowski." In a spring training game. Think of all the pitchers Paul Pryor must have called over the course of his lengthy career and yet a guy who never made the Bigs captured his attention the most. Later, I read a LA Times story on Dalko. . much of it like what was shown here. A sad tale of woe and misery. Dalkowski used to show up at Angels games sometimes with jewelry or cheap goods, some of it recycled, looking for money. The players who knew his reputation often bought stuff just to help him out. It's hard to imagine his trek as a migrant farm worker. . picking vegetables and sleeping in garbage cans. I'm amazed that he ever made it back to Connecticut. Even more so that he lived to be 80, While this is a wonderfully produced video on Steve Dalkowski's bittersweet life, I find the last statement on how "he lived life to the fullest" distressing. Alcoholics seldom enjoy a "full" life.

If only Dalkowski could have hung in there and overcome his injury. On the bright side, Dave McNally made the roster in 1963 and he turned out real good for the Birds. With the exception of Pappas, the rest of the Kiddie Korps pitchers all had arm troubles but the Orioles pitching staff persevered nonetheless.

I looked up his stats, damn they ain't exaggerating when they talk about his control issues. In his 9 seasons in the minors he had: 236 games (152 starts) 956 innings 1324 strikeouts 1236 walks 37 hit batters 145 wild pitches His first 5 seasons he had BB/9 of: 18.7 17.9 16.7 13.9 17.1 I don't think I've ever seen a walk rate that high from a pitcher on any level - majors, minors, college. His last 4 seasons were a lot better in terms of BB/9 but still weren't good by any means 6.4 8.8 6.1 6.3 It's a shame no coach could ever reign in his control to an acceptable level to pitch in the majors. Maybe then the injury never happens, he becomes one of the greats and Nolan Ryan would've been known as "Steve Dalkowski lite". Definitely one of baseball's greatest "what if" stories.

Many of the Orioles in the 60's said he threw harder than Nolan Ryan (100.9, 10 ft from plate) vs today (10 ft out of hand) estimated at 107-108. Earl Weaver said he threw much harder than Ryan. General consensus is he threw at least 110+.
