Dick Tobiason: Oregon State Capitol Foundation Oral History Project
Lieutenant Colonel Dick Tobiason
b. 1935
Allan Richard “Dick” Tobiason was born in Boston, Massachusetts. He joined the U.S. Army in 1957 and became a fixed wing and helicopter pilot. He retired after 20 years of service and two tours in Vietnam. He went on to work for the airline industry and NASA. Tobiason and his family eventually moved to Bend, Oregon.
In the interview, Tobiason details both his own experiences in the Army and his advocacy for military veterans. His work honoring veterans began after meeting Robert D. “Bob” Maxwell, a World War II veteran and Medal of Honor recipient, in 2004. Together they began a flag program, established a veterans’ memorial in Bend, organized honor flights for World War II vets, and started a memorial highway program. The highway program now includes thousands of miles of designated state and federal highways, named in honor of veterans.
Tobiason also discusses his work with both the Oregon legislature and the Oregon State Capitol Foundation to recognize veterans. In 2024 the Oregon House of Representatives passed House Concurrent Resolution 202, recognizing Tobiason for a lifetime of service honoring Oregon veterans, Medal of Honor recipients, and Gold Star families.

What a gift to Oregon. I remember her proposed and successful legislation
Are berry farmers rich in Oregon? They always have new equipment and vehicles
Are there any groups like this in Washington State?
What an Icon of Salem's history. I first knew of Gerry Lewin when my Mom was the Circulation Manager at the Statesman Journal and he was thought of as royalty! I always wondered if the story of Gerry and his Porsche 911 was true! 😄
Is this the same club that used to be called the Chicano Club?
This was amazingly interesting -- I didn't realize how many specific styles of side saddles there were: it makes sense; I just hadn't thought of it before. I wonder how many other styles of side saddles may still be in use.

A terrific and touching interview. I got to serve concurrently with Joyce in her last ten years in the Leg. I remember meeting he 11:29 r at a demo campaign school in 1974.

I remember watching from the avenue when this was recorded. Was on may way to the furniture factory. I had to stop and listen to Kemo and fam sing and play in this garden they helped create. To anyone that doesnt know, because they've not been to a prison, prison is tough. Befor i got to osp, all i seen was concrete and steel, fences with razorwire, guards with guns... then i hit osp... and seen this healing garden...my heart came alive! Fishes, trees, plants, waterfalls, bridge... military memorial, the zen rock garden... i could not believe what i was seeing! I worked hard to get a cell in c block hi, just so i could hear the birds, water and rustling of the trees. I stayed out of trouble and worked, just so i didnt lose my place there. Much love and respect to all who donated and help make this really happen. Because in that one little spot, in oregons only max pen... there is hope. Love. Acceptance. And most of all, family. My experience at osp was life changing. I am focused. I have drive to do what needs to be done. It has made me accept change and embrace it fully. This ecperience alone, at the healing garden, has. Changed me. For the better! Not speaking for anyone else, but for me, ill never forget, and even tho osp/prison is not supposed to be a good time, the establishment should know, that garden is love, hope, and should be common. Now im just rambling, so ill end this. I miss all those short times. Kemo and Kashi and everyone else? I hope to see you all again...JUST NOT IN PRISON!!!! aho kolas, the'kichihola !! much love, my brothers... ❤
You're not credible when y'all would allow White folks to laugh and giggle like assassins on your background. Stay off marauders pretending to be Grand Ronde.
Oh no, the terrible new lyrics.

I was secretary to Phil Lang during the 1969 session and am very pleased to see this video. I remember so much of what he was referring to in the interview. And am very pleased to see he has been honored with the naming of a wing after him and this video. He always put the best interests of the people of the state of Oregon first.
This is pitiful, a disgrace to God and Oregonians, millions of babies have lost their lives in Oregon, and all she can do is talk about a bottle bill. She gives no recognition or appreciation for the one who founded the government Jason Lee. She knows better, she knows Jason Lee's work and that he was the initiator of the government, our educational system, the church and the first to have a Christian wedding in the west west. Lee's mission was the foundation for Christian culture in Oregon and effects us to this day.
You glossed over the most important individual in Oregon history Reverend Jason Lee, who begin the government for Oregon, Reverend Lee was also the founder of the educational system, which is Willamette University. He's also the founder the first orphanage, church, hospital and first marriage of a European Anglo. He was one of the primary initiators to established the economics of the cattle trade, and numerous other first. He is more correctly the father of Oregon Territory and our state.

Hi Janet, Thanks for bringing back very fond memories of those days. Your memory of what happened when is amazing. It's all an eventful blurr to me. The people are what I remember most. You and the Sweetlands, the Davidsons, the Katz, and so many more. I miss Keith. I wish he could have been interviewed for this project.
