Snow Camping at Hanging Lake, Gin Peak in the Callahan Valley
I live in Shawnigan and I'm a regular user of these trails. I come across so many bikepackers and it's great to be able to see your experience of the Trans Canada Trail here in the Cowichan Valley.
Awesome! You live in a beautiful location to have regular access to these trails! We will definitely be back for more! Any places you recommend?
@@nextcoastadventures There a many options. There is the Sooke Wilderness Trail that comes up from Victoria to the South end of Shawnigan and then you can head north along the West side of Shawnigan Lake to the Kinsol Trestle. This is a challenging route with a few tough climbs, but it can be a great alternative to the Mill Bay ferry. Less travelled are the many logging roads. If you are looking for something a little more challenging than the Trans Canada Trail, from Koksilah Park, near the North-west end of Shawnigan, there are a few routes along logging roads that can take you to Glenora or Skutz Falls. A nice short loop that can be added in when riding near Duncan is along the dykes.
@james.ainsworth cool thanks for the suggestions! I am adding them to my list
liked your video of your trip. Do you have the route on ridemy gps or strava to post?
Sure can! connect.garmin.com/modern/course/264034679 connect.garmin.com/modern/course/264036885
Great trip, really enjoyed tagging along. Nicely done and great music as well, cheers 😊
Thanks!!! We will definitely be back to do more exploring our that way!!
Love seeing your perspective of this ❤
Thanks so much! Have you done the loop?
@@nextcoastadventures tried to do it this June and had to turn back because of snow 3-8ft on the trail, it was a solo attempt so I was a bit bold with that in June 😅 hoping to come back to redeem myself
Wow 3-8 feet that's intense!!! It definitely seems like there was a lot more snow this year
@@nextcoastadventures it was insane but a great way to get properly introduced to volcanoes 😅
Was the orientation just a part of the race or the whole race?
Not the whole race, just a section. However you do get a map at the start and the check points are on there. You do need to have basic map reading, but only one specific orienteering section. Feel free to reach out on our Facebook page if you have any additional questions too
Awesome video! Thanks for sharing! It was nice to see all the sections
Glad you enjoyed it!
Nice snowshoeing adventure!
The best! It's so good
Fantastically captured adventure my friend, gorgeous and touching shots.👌👌

Awesome!!! We will check it out!
just went, didnt summit which was kind've a bummer but it was still fun and had great views, long road walk though.
Ya, long walk to and from for sure. Cheers
There's always next time too! How far did you get?
@@nextcoastadventures around the middle of the creek or waterfall on the mountain and then I got super tired, and on the road back my legs were giving out😂
Did you have any bear encounters?
None at all, saw some scat but that was it. Are you thinking of tackling this one?
@@nextcoastadventures pretty sure I wanna go
Do you have a group you are going to go with? Let us know once you have gone, would love to know what you thought.
@@nextcoastadventures yep, I have a group going
Let us know how it went for you after you get back! Going soon? Doing a day trip or multiday?
Awesome! Looking to go sometime!
It was gorgeous! We are looking at doing a multiday there, as there are some other peaks that look fun to tackle!!
@@nextcoastadventures Quick question, what gear did you bring, and should I bring a GPS or is the route pretty straight forward for a beginner like me?
@Austinlai The route is pretty straight forward, but I'd recommend looking up some GPX data or seeing some others climbs as there is a crevasse or two depending where you go. There is a route that goes around most of the snow in the summer, but even with that I'd recommend having a helmet, ice axe, crampons or at least micro spikes, plus the usual safety gear, water, etc.
