    Instead of using the digital fluke try using an analog Simpson meter between each generator with the circuit breaker opened. What you should see is a rise and fall of the voltmeter needle. 0 volts means generators at synchronization and maximum voltage means generators 180 degrees out of phase. I was taught and shown that method 36 years ago.

    • @galaxybounce82
      @galaxybounce82 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I love old school ways like this. I will try to put together some of the Simpson meters and show it a little more clearly.

    • @generatorjohn4537
      @generatorjohn4537 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@galaxybounce82 I was asked to phase in a generator at an existing power plant 15 years ago. The generator was off line to repair a damaged 115 kvac oil filled cable. Once the high voltage cable was repaired we needed to ensure the phasing was correct. I used three Simpson meters at the generating station. I measured across (between) the generator side and bus side secondary potential circuits. A phase to A phase, B phase to B phase and C phase to C phase. Watched the rise and fall of the meters. The operator was telling me via walkie talkies from the control room when his sync scope needle hit 12:00. My meters were at 0 volts when he observed 12:00. I concluded from that what we both observed that the phasing of the cables were correct and the generator breaker could be closed. Thanks for your reply.

    • @galaxybounce82
      @galaxybounce82 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Luckily there is no load on them and the voltage is low enough that you probably would trip the breaker. I didn't want to damage the equipment since it's quite expensive. Out in the real world the output of any generator is protected by fuses or breakers in case of this exact scenario.

    • @generatorjohn4537
      @generatorjohn4537 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@galaxybounce82 if a generator breaker is closed when the generator is out of phase with the system, tremendous damage will be incurred to the stator windings not to mention the prime mover (turbine). Many generator sets use 25 relaying schemes to ensure the generator breaker is properly synchronized onto the system.

    • @losttownstreet3409
      @losttownstreet3409 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      someone said: they will sync regardless of the situation and the possible damage. (it was only a 300kW generator) It happens quite a lot that synchronization failed and you need to retry. As the people in the control room a 631GW network could tell, they now have practice. Ideally there are electric fuses which disconnect fast enough if the lines are overloaded. If not the heat triggers fuses blow as last resort which costs several hundreds dollars each. When the fuses don't blow the lines or the generator will blow up. With old equipment you only have heat fuses which you need to replace. Newer units have electronic fuses which record the current and triggers the switch. As lines have a reactance you have some time till you get maximum current in an overcurrent situation. That was the problem as some people near a transformer station want to switch on a 5MW computer box/container (they had to phone the power company as there where nearly zero reactance between this box and the meter and the meter shows a power usage like s short if they switch the box on, but it settles at 5MW instead of rising any further; at first they don't called and jump scared power company). You don't want to get your generator near power limit to sync as it wears down the equipment.

    Ecclesiastes 1:1-9 [1]The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem. [2]Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity. [3]What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under the sun? [4]One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth for ever. [5]The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to his place where he arose. [6]The wind goeth toward the south, and turneth about unto the north; it whirleth about continually, and the wind returneth again according to his circuits. [7]All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full; unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again. [8]All things are full of labour; man cannot utter it: the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing. [9]The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.

      James 4:13-15 [13]Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain: [14]Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. [15]For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.
