9.25.24 BRING COSTS DOWN: How Policymakers Can Help Families Build Abundant Homes, Care, & Energy
มุมมอง 29วันที่ผ่านมา
The high cost of living tops the list of Americans’ concerns. Yet too many ignore the root of the issue and attempt to subsidize demand rather than tackle the real culprit: a lack of supply of essential goods and services. Fortunately, a growing number of thinkers and policymakers are focusing on supply-side reforms to build abundant homes, care, and energy. This 30-minute conversation focuses ...

These have been vacation rental condos for 45 years and you should fire the politicians who have blocked building housing for decades. These rentals also pay almost all your taxes if you looked at a budget. Build housing, stop trying to take what isn’t yours.

@br6422 there is no water Follow on the fire and water fight that has been going on for over a century. In Lahaina there is only about 27 percent of the water that goes to the people amd the county combined The rest of it is controlled by big money It's stolen water.. But we don't even have enough water to save our people in a fire that kills people. Most of these condos were taken out of the long term inventory because you could make more money doing short term rentals. The majority of these owners are not from here and take money out of the county. These owners claim that maui county will go broke if this happens. Maui county is one of the wealthiest counties in the country not because of this list of short term rentals. They are funded largely by the hotels and the many many multi million dollar homes everywhere. The median home price of a single family home for a middle class family is 1.6 million in kihei, where most of these condos are. This also includes the luxury home of the multi millionaires amd billionaires that have their vacation homes here. This list is only a portion of the short term rentals which was considered as an exception granted to the normal allowances. At the time (in the 70s) they did a Inpact study and they knew that doing so would lead to the demise of the local people. How will these condo owners survive when there is no one to even pick up trash? We are at such a severe labor shortage for normal and very necessary community functions because locals have no where to live as these homes became short term rentals. Look up hawaii and public school busses. Our economy is suffering because we don't have locals to work vital jobs (keeping utilities, hospitals, schools, infrastructure.. Etc) no locals means no tourists will want to go there. If they are OK with imminent domain I'm which all the Hawaiian lands were stolen so they can have their beach front vacation rentals (their rights were stripped for others financial gain)... they should be OK with this where people are becoming homeless or leaving their lands for the first time in hundreds of years by force, especially after the lahaina fires which burned thousands of structures. If they feel tht the county should do what is right to protect individual property rights, they should give back their stolen lands to the Hawaiian families. #Hipocracy

The Hawaii state and county governments have been wrongly demonizing PRIVATE "vacation rentals" for far too long. I'm honestly shocked that their draconian regulations against them have not been challenged to the State Supreme Court as a "taking" of those properties. And this is all about campaign contributions and lobbying from HOTEL chains... International HOTEL chains... that COMPETE with local "vacation rentals" for tourist dollars. Hotel prices in Hawaii are ASTRONOMICAL. Vacation rentals are literally the ONLY way that MANY Americans--and foreigners--could EVER visit Hawaii. And what the State and Counties continually ignore and dismiss is EXACTLY what is being discussed in this video: The fact that MANY "vacation rental" properties are OWNED by LOCALS... and ALL "vacation rentals" are serviced (cleaned, repaired, improved) by LOCALS. If ANYTHING, the State and Counties should be EXPANDING opportunities for LOCALS to OWN and OPERATE "vacation rentals"--not RESTRICTING or ELIMINATING them. Also, as CLEARLY shown after the MAUI fires, having these "vacation rentals" available can be CRUCIAL in a natural disaster--which Hawaii FREQUENTLY has... between the Tsunamis and the Volcanos and the Fires. WHERE would all of the displaced Lahaina residents have lived for the past year if NOT for "vacation rentals"??? But, the idiots running the county and state governments in Hawaii are some the STUPIDEST people on the planet. THEY created the housing problem in Hawaii... NOT "vacation rentals". HORRIBLE mismanagement and of land and HORRIBLE mismanagement of the zoning and planning and development of that land--by state STATE and COUNTY agencies has lead the dire housing shortages on ALL of the islands. So... do you think that the FOX is the one that should be now tasked with solving the problems that HE created in the hen house??? I feel so sorry for the local Hawaiians... who have to live under these horrible conditions that have been created by their own government. A lack of job opportunities. A lack of a living wage. A lack of housing. Sky high prices for everything. A lack of quality education opportunities--particularly higher education. A lack of a functioning and intelligent county and state government. And worst of all... a lack of HOPE for the their own futures--and the futures of their children. THIS is why so many Hawaiians have been moving to the mainland in recent years.

It is not online platforms and users. Platforms and users are 2 different classes and the state argued on behalf of itself and the state is not a person. So a person rights to free speech on the platform have yet to be addressed. I believe that a platform cannot regulate legal speech. Platforms try and expand the definitions of words so that they can ban legal speech and every time that occurs an American citizen should be able to file a complaint online with screen shots and win a $1000 fine from the social media company committing the violation for every day of the ban.

I don't know then how they are supposed to pay the minimum pay raise to delivery drivers if they want even lower prices charged for the service. This is highly complex, and I am not even sure if it can be legally implemented on gig apps not to charge this and that. If they were to do this with gig apps, then they should also put a cap on USPS, UPS, Fedex, all of their rates are skyrocketing and going up again this summer. I feel let the market dictate by basic principle of "supply and demand". If anything, then the city should forgive the collection of sales taxes on gig app orders and divert the savings to consumers or could go to the drivers income. I don't see why the sales tax of 9% be necessary on service charges.

Besides beyond poorly timed, SB-1047 will certainly drive tech companies out of California and eventually out of the US if similar laws are passed nation wide. This is poorly planned, poorly applied, and ambiguous enough to allow furthur monopolization of technology. Warning all my CA people, this is a horrible bill. Why? It mandates a "kill switch" for AI models. Like out of the movies. Everything else that follows in the bill is also fictional, hypothetical, and arbitrary. Thats not how networks or large language models work, they are not sentient or autonomous, they can be automated but that is totally different. Along every step of the process network engineers can start & stop services like an LLM. But now by law there must be a separate big red "kill switch" - and this will save us from Terminators? Geopolitically, regulation like this will only strengthen our enemies.

Bullshit Tell me how an autonomous vehicle is going to put chains on when it snows, How is it going to recognize road construction How is it going to recognize a traffic control flagger or officers hand signals, how is it going to navigate roads that are barely navigable to begin with. We are not ready for autonomous vehicles in this state When it comes to transporting freight, Who is going to insure that it's not overloaded. In Washington State trucks can gross up to 105,500 pounds, You tell me if a car has to avoid collision, is your truck going to be able to stop in time Highly doubtful It takes drivers many years of training to be able to handle a rig of that size nd weight. It takes years to be able to make judgement calls that can either save or end a life. Not to mention the hundreds of thousands of jobs your going to be taking away. AI has its place. Just not the place of a skilled and trained commercial driver.

Jess Miers is a corporate shill who will only say pro-corporate stuff because she is paid, directly or indirectly, by the corporations or their lobbyists. She has a pro-corporate agenda and completely ignores/gaslights the obvious harms from Section 230 and its contribution to a lawless internet anarchy. The lady is not honest, IMO, and doesn't give a s**t about online harassment, doxing, cyber-stalking etc..., completely ignoring such obvious problems enabled by Section 230. It's BEYOND time to reform or repeal Section 230.

She is a former employee of Google and is now a paid corporate lobbyist for Big Tech. Would not trust anything she spews, as it is almost certain to be self-serving corporate propaganda that endangers the public safety but lines Big Tech's pockets with cash.
