"Masters From Their Day"
Can a classic recording be produced in just one day?? Some incredibly talented folks have already shown us: Patsy Cline, Owen Bradley, Otis Redding, Tom Dowd, Elvis Presley, Sam Phillips, The Beatles, George Martin, James Brown. A lot of timeless records were produced in a single recording session - songs that we still sing at the top of our lungs.
Masters From Their Day is an on-going series of short documentaries focusing on artists making records. Each episode chronicles the efforts of a band and a record-producer as they attempt to record a new single in one day. The viewer experiences the real-time creative contemplations that go into the records being made by today's luminaries.
In their episode of Masters From Their Day, Deerhoof collaborate with an outside producer/engineer for the first time in their extensive career...and quite the producer it is. Chris Shaw has been integral to some of the most influential records of the past few decades, including Weezer's 'Blue Album', Public Enemy's 'It Takes a Nation of Millions To Hold Us Back' and 'Fear of a Black Planet', Tribe Called Quest's 'Low End Theory', not to mention his work with Keith Richards (a huge influence to Deerhoof), Bob Dylan...the list goes on.
Of course, it's always a risk when a self-driven DIY band goes into a big fancy studio with a big-time producer, so we knew this could get interesting, for better or worse...
The new single, 'Sexy, but Sparkly' (out now via the for-charity 7″ series LAMC), is a pop-art kaleidoscope of colors. The song is a new direction for Deerhoof, yet a fitting addition to their lexicon. The essence of Deerhoof -- Satomi Matsuzaki's signature pure-tone minimalism, Greg Saunier's drumming dynamism, the intricate guitar parts that create a sum of raw power - are all present, but they've never sounded quite like this. Chris Shaw pushes the Deerhoof narrative into an exciting new setting that is lively-yet-composed, raw-yet-shimmering, and completely enticing.

    Wait, why is John's electric mic'd lmao

    • @JunkBondTrader
      @JunkBondTrader 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Who knows exactly, I have a couple theories...having an extra microphone on the electric will give them an extra track to work with later, more options. It might sound good mixed in with the plugged in signal, or it might help certain guitar frequencies stand out in the whole mix. OR my other theory is that signal is for his headphone playback to hear himself. Some players like a clean playback, without any effects... certain fx can get you lost in your timing if its heavy enough. It might also be for avoiding signal delay. If his guitar sound is heavily pre-processed and introduces a bit of lag, it messes with your timing, so a clean signal will be closer to zero delay. And this way the band can hear the processed version. All speculation :p Finally, maybe they're just straight up recording their electric like an acoustic and adding effects in post, I mean, it is Deerhoof, it probably wouldn't be the weridest thing theyve done haha and would probably still sound great in that studio.

      to record the picking sounds and mix with the amps signal. to give a more percussive sound to the guitar.

    I'm curious to why does the singer's mic has a windscreen, is it intentional being used to attenuate some of the high frequencies?

    I saw you guys in Santa Cruz in 2003 and I think your guitar player at that time knew my girl friend at the time. Anyways that comment Greg, about not playing in time busted me up. Dude it is why we all loved you then, just how awkward your timing was. Not just the drums but everything. I want you to go back there. But this is a good mix, it reminds me of your 2nd album, straight forward melodies and distortion. Not your first which was, kind indescribable for me.

      Deerhoof often experiments with feeding distortion pedals into other distortion pedals, probably some fuzz stuff too... Check out their rig rundown episode, they discuss how they get their unique tones.

    Singing with a cold, while often requires more effort and energy, also is usually easier to reach into higher registers. This is usually due to the nose being blocked so that the singer is forced into having a better connection in order to sing well. In saying that, he probably still felt like shit, so impressive none the less.
