2000 German Grand Prix - F1 Challenge '99-'02: The Mendoza Career
Round 11 of the calendar takes us the closest track F1 has to an oval, the high speed Hockemheimring in Germany. A track that massively stresses engines and with a very, very tricky sector 3 thanks to the low downforce necessary to achieve competitive top speed. And to make things "more fun", there seems to be rain along the way. Who will prevail on the tricky track?

In their last action, they gave us a pair of victories. Our opponents keep making the occassional tactical errors which give us enough of a break to keep getting the wins. Finallyyyyyy. I was waiting for this. Mendozaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa (revenge voice from The Simpsons)
Great episode and great race we see, probably one of the best of the season. A shame Mendoza's retirement, whethever an superb race of the Venezolan. I play with the Jorge Alonso's spredsheet as well and I'm on my fourth season in 2002 with McLaren remplacing DC, and my three races that I run in the old Hockenheimring ended always with retirement, in 1999 and 2000 for brake failure and in 2001 for engine failure in last laps (I was changed the brakes setup to avoid suffer a third brake failure in three years). Definitely the old Hockenheimring is the most challenging race for human player in F1C...
So you finally upload also can you give me some tips cuz I want to make some f1 channel content and it will start from the 1990 season soooo any advice? Ps it will be at my alt channel
Well, if it's going to be on F1 Challenge, you either use the F1 VB mod, which has all seasons but it's super duper heavy because it has ALL SEASONS, or you find mods for every season manually, which should be doable with enough searching. That and just have a lot of disk space to record stuff, that tends to be a big limitant.
lol pitstops without any mechanics:)
The wonders of F1 Challenge!
Playing this on my rg300x
Wish there was a mod community for this amazing game
There was back in the day. I used file editor and some other programs. I played this to exhaustion, went through four gaming steering wheels.
@@fransb8543 In 2010 I collected a lot of Porsche cars mods. Sadly I don't have them anymore. Would have loved if it was possible to mod in new Era - XXI century era. With lots of new cars.

This game needs to be played with analog controller. You won't be able to complete some of the later races otherwise.
I did it using keyboard only. although I agree, analog makes high speed turning way easier.
Keyboard only completer here. Hard as hell. High Stakes career mode was awesome as well!
I've completed the game many times with just a keyboard, when I was a kid. But playing with wheel was a pleasure. Such a good game.
Oh, they get plenty hard, cars understeer a lot the faster they go, not that big of an issue with analog (at least when you learn to use it which ... I'm working on it).
It wouldn't be in the calendar anyways
Damn that spontaneously came into my feed, you've made it hahaha
I'm not used to being this high, it kinda awesome.

people still play f1c? interesting choice nowadays with sims like assetto corsa around but i respect it, game's good
Yeah, F1C is still around and kicking, the modding community keeping it alive. I would have preferred to use Assetto Corsa, but my PC would not have liked it, would have undergone nuclear fission.
@@jose21crisisMShaha i can relate to that, my laptop is bad too but with tweaks it runs ac at 30 fps most of the time
What even is this 'What We've Lost' series? What is it about? What did we lose?
The basic concept is comparing modern machinery to older cars in tracks that "we've lost", tracks that won't be raced at again because, say, they don't exist anymore (like this version of Hockemheimring), wouldn't be able to take the economic hit of hosting races (like the modern Hockemheimring), are out in the middle of nowhere (like Magny-Cours), among other reasons. All in all, a showcase of modern cars in old tracks.
Now! The last question open would be what happens if you put Pirellis tyres on the Williams FW12? Is it on par with the Mercedes with or without DRS or somewhere in between?
I ... actually hadn't thought about putting slicks on the Williams. *takes notes* That will be an interesting test which I'm also curious about.
Thats why I hate modern F1. Street circuits sucks except the clasics of course . F1 needs to return in Germany and France
Do you "hate" modern F1 while still watching it?? Maybe you are just a pathetic little boy complaining because the world has changed and you don't like it 😂
Absolutely. Heck, there are good street circuits out there. Adelaide is fun, even if the current cars might be a bit too long for it.
I can’t like this comment enough.
wow, the gain in last sector was huge
Absolutely, that's the wonders of having so much downforce despite the tiny wings.
okay, hear me out. under 50 races, 1 experience point from 50 to 100, 2 points 100-150, 3 and so on... otherwise do it by steps of 40 races, so from 200 onwards it's 5 experience points
I was actually planning, at least for future playthroughs, to try to do a scaling system like the base game. The highest rated driver there in terms of experience is Jean Alesi who (incorrectly) has 151 races (should be 135, but they counted the 1998 season). There's also Johnny Herbert, but he has less races, and other drives with similar races have less experience. After some Excel shenanigans, that comes out to 38 race blocks and ... well ... I think 40 race blocks works better and it's easier to track, like you mentioned. that's 2 seasons + 8 races. Also thought doing it based on seasons, Alesi has 9 about to be 10. I could make it easier by increasing it every 2 seasons, but I'll stick with 40 race blocks. For Test Drivers I'll just use 56 race blocks, that's 3 seasons + 8 races.
Enjoying so much your content. I love the mixture between the real season and introducing a new driver, evolution of teams, etc. Plus the mixture between the tv broadcasting and the vision of the Jaguar team is perfect (besides, this Jaguar is a piece of art).
Mendoza manages to take a podium for Jaguar!
Challenge for the continuation of the campaign: win the title a second time without ever investing setup point in rain. That's just too OP
I'll try to find a way to limit the amount of rain points I use, just enough to have my guys evenly matched with Level 5 Wet Weather drivers. Because, indeed, full rain points is broken. Microprose didn't really balance that rating properly at all.
@@jose21crisisMS still too OP imo. The AI is never the brightest I'm those conditions. So often I find the very good wet weather drivers just yoloing the wet conditions on set of dry tyres and refusing to pit, or viceversa once It becomes dry these drivers refuse to make an additional stop to get back on dry tyres. They'd rather stay out 20 laps on wet tyres and lose 2 laps
OMG. Jean Alesi just did the most patriotic french move possible and took Ralf out
Jean ended being a true hero in our times. Though I don't Ferrari like him that much anymore.
The setup trick is sick overpowered. I almost won a race with the 2001 Minardi. I bet that, with a better roll on car handling starting a new save, full money investement for car handling, and MAX setup points, at Hockenheim on a zero stopper, and some attempts (you need a good combination of strategies, since they are random if Micheal Schumacher gets the 1 stopper no way in hell I can beat him, but if all the top runners roll a 3 or 2 stopper...) I can win a rce with the 2001 Minardi. heck, forget win, I can make it a 1-2!
You could try using the new F1 challenge overlays for your races
I actually considered using it, but a) My computer is not good enough to run the overlay, play AND record with decent framerate, which is why I record using replay and b) At least prior to the recording of this video, GPerso's overlay didn't work on replays. He's made a version that does work on replays, but it's still not perfect.
You've bought Prost Grand Prix with great podiums like these two! Keep doing well. Not to mention, it bought it's chances at being 1st in the constructors.
What parameters I need to touch to see more overtakes between the AI drivers? You played with max revolutions or you down a bit the rev for the race? You can decrease the revs during the race with a button? About the race, I only can say that it was very similar with the real life one.
I usually just increase Aggression and hope for the best. It really depends on the track whenever you'll see overtakes. AI really need some solid overspeed to be able to pass as well. F1C AI just struggles to pass. I usually play with max revs, but short shift a bit to save the engine. One doesn't really need full revs most of the time in this game, but I use them in case I am in the slipstream and need a bit more speed.
Thanks. The problem is that I always play with automatic gears. But I like to play with most revs posible because I don't like when I don't suffer mechanical issues.
I do have a feeling that Cosworth is the blame on this. They should be replaced by a better engine supplier with reliable engines, though. Even I agree with Mendoza at this point where Jaguar got a double DNF in this race.
Yeah, the fact the race team, design team, and engine team are all doing their own thing separate from each other doesn't really help their case.
the zero stops is broken in Hockenheim. I expect an overwhelming victory
Okay, I think I know what I misunderstood. What I do at Hockenheim is to set the driver inputs as minimum acc. top speed and kerb use. Then I tried, on these settings, to compare the one stop and the zero stop, and the zero stop was overwhelmingly better. You used way different driver inputs, so what I thought it would happen, didn't materialize
It was meant to work succesfully and for Panis to win that, but his Tyre Temperature increasing by 1 points increased his tyre wear, which tanked his pace as the laps went on. There's also the fact I underestimated how much fuel he could save and had to lower his orders for him to make it. Small mistakes, one my fault, one out of my control, but it ended up turning 1st or 2nd into 4th.
I'll repeat for this year too: being less than 30 points behind with 6 races to go... the championship's still open. you just need to start winning from here on out
Yeah, our hopes really depend on the Germany upgrade letting us catch the Top 3 and get a few wins. It would be easier if, say, Williams fell off. At least they are running enough interference that the WCC is still there for the taking.
Great work on the 1-2 podium finish at France! Alain Prost must be proud of you.
Thank you, yeah Alain should be pretty happy with that result. I do hope these races keep getting wet weather, that's when the car (and drivers) really come alive.
How do you know the sector times of your teammate? Is there a file where you can see the sector times of each Driver? 👀
There's a program called akoVCR, which let's you open the replay files. Since the replay files store all kinds of data, like lap times for all drivers, I use that to read Irvine's (or in future episodes, the pole sitter's) sectors and compare it to my own sectors.
@@jose21crisisMS Wow thats nice, thank you :)
So the variance always should be average/3 or minor to this? Also if i put the same number, basicaly that dont gona meant cars can DNF in first lap? I ask this because rfactor 1 and i think AMS, dont have the stall parameter of f1 99 02, so i think is imposible to replicate stalls in start of the sessions Great video new subscriber
That's just my recommendation, so that the game can assign values close to 0. Setting the same number could still result in first lap DNFs, yes, but it is just as likely to result in extremely high lifetime values that can cause 0 DNFs, even if a player mistreats an engine by overreving it and overheating it. I think those values are a better balance between early DNFs and good lifetime.
@@jose21crisisMS great thanks mate, now im gona always watch that engine have adequate values, also i dont know until i watched this video that Variance also can increase the engine life
No way Minardi could achieve only 2 secs behind pole ...
Yeah, one of the things with F1 Challenge is that the performance gaps are a bit closer than they were in real life, so Minardi and Prost are just 2 secs off pole instead of 3 secs. It also helps that, in this continuity, Minardi has more powerful engines than IRL (The CR-1, which Stewart used in 1999, instead of the Zetec-R they actually used).
I feel personally targeted 😂 For real though, I'd love to have a chat with you about this, as I don't doubt you're wrong, but when setting my files up this way vs. "my" way, I've not had positive results. Hopefully we can catch up about it before I kick off 1996 :)
Sure thing. This video is mostly a "hey, figured out how this works, and here's what I'd suggest" and in no means a "do this or everything is wrong!11!!" type of video. I'm still around in Discord, email works just as well.
@@jose21crisisMS lovely, added you on Discord.
What config do you have for AI in the PLR? I see Verstappen doing a spin without been touched by another car
That's an issue with the Canada track itself. For this one I had to modify the AIW file. I used the rf AIW+CAM editor for this, and just edited the line on the 2nd chicane to be wider and not touch the kerbs, because they are very, VERY slippy on this track, even for the AIs. There's not much PLR editing I could do that helped in this case.
Well done. I recently used average and standard deviation metrics from weather to pull a normal distribution random number for temperatures in GTR2.
Thank you. It's nice to see that ISI Motor responds well and itself uses normal distributions. I'd guess it does the same when it comes to other parameters, like the brake lifetime parameters or maybe driver ratings, but this I'm not totally sure.
@@jose21crisisMS I bet wherever there a “variance” it’s for standard deviations and normal distributions
btw, somehting you could do on the engine: if you let your drivers drive on minimum acceleration, minimum top speed and minimum something else too probably (don't remember anymore) you can simply take everything away from response and rigidity. That's 12 points to invest, and with only 9 you can max out fuel, weight and heat, and give something back to reliability. This may be a good idea for the race engine.
Probably Kerb Use is the other one you are thinking. That is an interesting idea that I can experiment on. I don't mind driving around with 1 Reliability point because Auto Gears compensates for that. Heat, at least with the way I set up the orders, shouldn't be a big issue in races, mostly in qualifying. So what I could do is take points away from Heat and Response to put into Rigidity (so I can keep the Top Speed high), Fuel and Weight for the race engine. Although if I lower Heat I'd have to develop better Hydraulics Reliability, as lower Heat wears Hydraulics quicker. And for the Qualifying engine, I can definitely take away points of Rigidity and put them into Weight and Heat (so I can push the engine more), or even into Response (so there's less driver errors). Definitely will be messing around with that, although I would prefer it if Renault brought an upgraded engine for me to mess about with.
I can only wonder what gave you the wretched inspiration of doing a 1 stopper in Spain...
Like many ideas I have: "It seemed a good idea at the time". Thought that track position would offset the extra weight of the fuel. This despite knowing well that fuel is heavily penalized on that track. Lesson has been learned (again) and the same mistakes shall not be repeated in Britain and Hungary.
8:52 Total actually entered in F1 as a sponsor for Peugeot being an engine supplier in F1 from 1995 to 2000. In 1995, Peugeot was an engine supplier to Jordan after the 1994 season with McLaren which felt disastrous that it costed them. Total began sponsoring Jordan from 1995 to 1997 and Prost from 1998 to 2000.
Thanks for the review on Total. What I meant by "hadn't entered F1" was that, at least in this Grand Prix World save, they never became a fuel supplier option that could be selected. In some saves suppliers can enter and leave the sport (say, Toyota entering, or Bridgestone leaving), so Total could have entered, which would have given everyone another fuel option. That hasn't happened so far, which ... a bit unfortunate. Had I used, say, the 2000 or 1999 mods, Total would have been an option from the start.
@@jose21crisisMS Yeah, had Total was in the 2001 season, this would be a better option than Elf.
Jose I have you F1C Wet Line FIxer and was working great last weeks. However since today when I try to open this .exe, it doesn't open. In my career, the next race will be in wet conditions turning to dry; last race with that situation, AI cars were flying and human player (me) was very slow (if you are off of the dry line there's no grip), so much that my fastest lap of the race was the worse of the 22 drivers, It's very frustrating. There's an alternative way to fix when the track is drying? Thanks!
That's a bit weird. Did you change anything, like the F1 Challenge exe name? If memory serves, that Fixer only works when the F1 Challenge exe is "F1 Challenge Online.exe". Other than that, double check you are putting the inputs it asks. I do need to update and reupload it at some point, that one was an old version that I made for other people to test, not a true final version. There's some stuff I do need to check out as well regarding the fixer.

It's strange because a week ago was working great, and even now, if I download the file, stills not opening. Increasing the RainAbility for AI drivers to high values can help as alternative?
