Hi there, I'm a high school teacher at Trumbull High School in Trumbull, CT. I'm also a practicing wood-fire potter. I hope you find value in seeing my work at the wheel and around the kiln-yard. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions. Best, Trevor
Toadstools start to finish
This video covers the making of a two-piece toadstool. I included a condensed version of the throwing of the stem which was covered in a previous video. Each piece is made with equal amounts of clay. The base is white stoneware and the caps are porcelain.

Toadstool parts, stems & caps, are made using equal amounts of clay. The bases, shown here, are thrown a bit thick as they will be fired on their side and they'll be lovingoutdoors; subject to weather and dogs running through the garden beds etc. I suggest pounding a long piece of metal like rebar into the ground when installing these bases in the garden... The rebar serves to keep the base upr...
Recycling Clay using a Bluebird Mixer in the Barn
มุมมอง 2321 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
Recycling clay is surprisingly easy thanks to my friend Chris Alexiades who donated this mixer to the cause here in Woodbridge Connecticut. The best things about this mixer are that it is stainless steel and dumps. A mix of 2-5 gallon buckets and one full bucket of throwing water renders throwable clay. A couple weeks of aging is even better. This is a mix of porcelain and stoneware.

Guppie Build Edit for Role of the Bowl Presentation
Thanks for this - I am looking into a bluebird myself and wondering if this is the larger or smaller version, and if you're overall happy with the results. I've got a small space a lot of reclaim Thanks
Hi Jordan, just found you in IG. Nice work! It's the larger one, #150 clay capacity. That's spot on as a 5 gallon bucket is about #50....two dry buckets and one using throwing water....fine particles in the water make for throwable clay right away. I only figured this out in June, thanks to help from my friend and fellow potter Jen Adamson. This machine takes the "Ugh" out of reclaiming for sure. Totally reach out anytime, thanks for reaching out. Decided to start capturing daily activities in the calssroom and wondering if you have any advice about video quality or anything? happy holidays, Trev
@@trevoryoungberg Thank you, much appreciated! I have a small Shimpo pug, which is great but the hard part is getting any reclaim to the right consistency before putting through the machine and this seems like a good solution. Seems silly to spend thousands on a new machine when you can get new clay, but reclaim never goes away on its own! I've looked into horizontal dough mixers but I doubt it would have enough power. Anyway, the video quality is great, enough explanation about the process without using any words or dialog. Well done.
Thank you, to see finished works, check out my website if you like: trevoryoungberg.com
Very good and satisfying by the way what was it's look after drying. ❤
Thank you very much for the demonstration. I grew up through my teen years on the Hopi Reservation. I learned about pottery from my adopted Ami family. My parents and i would go out and find clay and refine it for my grandmother and aunts. I miss those rimes. I am 52 now, and the home i found in Brooktrails ca has many springs. There is ancient blue clay i am planning on trying to refine and use.
Wow Chris, amazing to hear that you have experienced pottery in that way! I'm gradually getting into using local clays and materials like feldspars and rocks. So cool. I'd love to hear more about your past experience....how did the clays look when fired? What type of kiln? The blue clay sounds amazing! I'd trade you a pot for a pound or two of the blue clay....I've never heard of blue clay. Thank you for reaching out, Trev
@trevoryoungberg we will be putting in our spring box soon. I will be digging out some clay. I will let you know.
Sensational!
Thank you Robby!
Good morning Dwayne, thank you so much for your kindness. I'm happy to know that you find value in what I'm sharing. I've been thinking about documenting classroom demos for a while and decided to just go for it. This makes me feel as though I should keep doing it. Really cool of you to reach out my friend. Take care brother and feel free to reach out anytime, Trev
You have beautiful skills friend. It's enjoyable watching you make things happen. I've enjoyed learning about this most ancient of human occupations.
The video is great, you need to keep promoting your channel. Is not hard.
Hey Ulric, I appreciate your affirming comment and your encouragement. I'd like to make videos that include voice overs someday...I teach ceramics at a high school. Basically, I'd like to provide wheel throwing instruction. Maybe sooner than later ;) Best, Trev
Super cool! Love watching these kiln builds. Whats that mixture that you put down for the floor of the firebox?
Hello, the firebox mixture was a blend of cement, recycle slip (porcelain and fireclay) and sand. 1:8:1. There's not a ton of heat down there and it's held up nicely ;) Thank you for reaching out, I'm happy to share any other details about the build if you like. I have a folder with all of the design/materials/equipment used for the project if you are interested. My email: TrevorYoungberg@Gmail.com
This is amazing.
Amazing work! The rock wall was such a neat idea.
Awesome
Really cool project, thanks for sharing. If you documented this on a blog or website or something I'd love to read about :)
Thanks Thomas, I'd be happy to answer any of your questions. I've not written anything up about the project but I'm happy to share any information that goes along with the project and pottery and all. My website: TrevorYoungberg.com Take care, Trev
What about drainage?
There's 3/8 gaps in the decking floor of the shower. Just gravel underneath the deck on the ground.
Thank you Trevor and to all the hands that made this such a fabulous firing. So appreciative to be able to partake in these firings!
Amazing job! the yakisugi tech is such an amazing effect and it fit well with the look of the house. the editing was really nice too, the music oddly fit the theme of the video.
Thanks so much, I glad you liked the video ;) All the BESt, Trevor
Dragging the logs in the dirt? Very hard on the blades , could use a log wizard and clean off the entry side and save the blades.
Hey John, thanks for the advice ;) We were sucking it up and busting it out that day...if there was a hose, we'd've def used it. The mill was parked on my arborist buddy's property and is now at my residence...with tractor, hose all the goodies ;) I'll check out the log wizad, is that one of those "u"shaped deals? Mill on my friend, Trev
very cool! what is your camera rig ? is it a drone???
Hello, there's a large chandelier that works with a gopro for the spinning shots, thank you!
Trevor Youngberg genius! thanks for sharing and solving my mystery! 🙏🙏🙏
That’s cool
I never use my clay/ceramic bird baths in the winter. The constant freezing at night and thawing during daylight will cause ceramic bird baths to disintegrate much sooner than they should. I use a heated, white, plastic bird birdbath in the winter but I don't fill it up too high because the water on the lip will freeze. I thought the heater had stopped working until realized I was filling it too high. But I live in the suburbs of Philadelphia and people in warmer climates probably don't have to worry about this. I try and look for white bird baths. That makes it much easier to tell if the water is dirty. I keep a tightly wound strainer hung-up near the bird bath and use that to clean very minute debris and birdcrap out of the birdbath between changes of the water. I change the water at least once a day. Some species of birds will crap in the water on a regular basis.
thanks for you insight Bill ;)
@@trevoryoungberg That's Ok I am only aware of this because it happened to a neighbor. She told me one day her clay bowl seemed to be OK but the next day it completely collapsed when she tried to fill it.
Nice, how much clay? I used 15 lbs.. Really nice wheel you have there.
Adopt me...hehehehe Nice job
Your left leg must get tired. Any way to use the right one or do you walk around with a limp?
Invest in a tractor
grifce you are right...I totally need a tractor ;) thanks for your advice my man!
Hey grifce, thanks for your advice. I had and have a tractor...just that the mill was off site for a bit while we milled through a bunch of logs at my buddies' place. The blade held up that day. Mill's are so awesome, can't tell you for sure how many projects it has provided material for ....projects I'd never have done without the mill...sheds, furniture, fencing...so cool. There are other milling videos on my TH-cam that show the mill...most recently the wood-fired pottery kiln. I'd love to hear what you think. Take care bro, Trev
so i made it too . just by using WoodPrix scripts:)
哈哈
Cool video! Nice treadle wheel too. Did you build it?
hi Jill, thank you. working out of Woodbridge, Connecticut. thank you for your interest. will post some new vids soon ;)
Wow Trevor, that is a great bird bath! What state do you hail from?
Are you flying a drone with a camera for this footage?
Hi Chris, Thank you, I use a fork to score the adjoining sections (concave meets convex lip). No slip as the pieces are soft. Just make sure to compress the clay during initiall pull through the seam. Also, keeping top section slightly tapered from base to lip helps......especially when the top/second section flares slightly when thrown when inverted for placement on section #1....the taper of the sections align to form a monolithic two section cylinder. Have fun making your planters and I'd love to see your work and continue corresponding! Happy throwing, Trevor
Trevor, wonderful piece. My question, when you connect the two pieces, do you score and use slip, or not? I've got a friend who wants me to make 4 similar planters for her. I'm not sure if I should use your method or make them using extruded sections?
Very cool
+Tanner Wnukowski Thanks Tanner ;) Glad you are getting info for your wheel work!
Nice work! The angles are great, as is your use of the timelapse segments. the music is awesome!
+Rob Waterman Thanks for checking the vid out Rob ;) It's fun putting them together and am always finding things to learn and try.
Yes, it's patterned after the Leach Design...made by a woodworker. I purchased it from the original owner (at a significant discount). I bet Simon's wheels are super nice.
Is this a Leach design treadle Potter's wheel. Looks like what Simon Leach uses in many of his videos.
good video
Gonna have to try this!
