What a throw back!
I first heard this song soon after my son was born, in 1992 on KPIG Radio out of Freedom, California. Loved it instantly and have it on several "saved" lists. (Would like it played at my wake when the time comes.) I, like other commenters here, have never found the published lyrics, but I think Lucarius did a pretty good job of writing them down, as heard. Maura O'Connell's voice and style were just the right combination with the arrangement to carry this one all the way. It never got a lot of play on the mainstream radio stations, but KPIG really did it justice. Well done, Lucarius.
I like when I hear a piece of music which will stay with me for a new year. The moment I listened to this heart warming preference I new. I just new that inside of me was full of love for this special piece of 🎶. ❤😅
Do you happen to have the dots for this? Is it in AMajor?
what do you mean with "dots"? I am not a musician. Only happened to have downloaded and re-uploaded this song at some point.
What a line-up and what beautiful music!
I love this piece. My grandmother is/was Eleanor of Usan and our family cherish her memory very dearly along with this very special music ❤️
It's Monday, the day after Christmas, 2022. I just listened to this beautiful music for the first time. I now put this in the company of The Lover's Waltz and Ashokan Farewell. Music that heals the soul and warms the heart. Thank you Lucarius1 for this!
Apart from it's obvious beauty, I am more thrilled because my name is Eleanor.
The most beautiful music for the end of my husband's funeral service. (Entrance music was an instrumental version of The Beach Boys Forever, which complimented each other) Thank you.
P
He's got the blues in his dna!
Beautiful
So lovely to hear a piece played straight without the fanciful warbling and screeching additions of most modern songs. Just beautiful melody, gracefully played as it was written, touching the heart.
I know Usan village, abandoned now, on the east coast of Scotland just south of Montrose and Feryden.
Thanks for posting the lyrics. Anyone know the chords? Can't find anywhere.
It's a lovely sad song, Usan is a forgotten fishing village next to the North Sea.
Spelling error occurred, rips up!
My Scottish/Irish Grandmother used to play music exactly like this. I was adopted, Eastern European descent. But because of her beautiful piano music, I got into Celtic music for over 25 years. This music tips my heart up! She played Raglan Road, and The Last Rose of Summer. It was the twin of emotion of this piece. This made my day, I want to learn this piece. Th U.
well 2021 now, long time and but I can assure you irish-schott music always touches the hungarian soul , and this affection will remain forever even after time end.... so long
Oops , I had written "tears my heart up" but word spell says tips!? Took all this time to see the printed error!😀😣😐! Thank you Bodfer! I wish/ hope I could have Hungarian in me too!
Best version. No question
How do I get to be the triangle player for the Transatlantic sessions?
he probably also played other percussion on other songs...
Pensive and loving. Feeling the calm. Thank you for posting this.
Love this tune.
❤️❤️
Very nice!
Wow, that is absolutely beautiful. Thank you for posting this. I will save it as a favorite.
I have a lump in my throat, a smile in my heart, and tears of joy. You have truly touched my soul. Tapadh leat mo charaid.
Where are you from? I live in Germany.
Love this song. I was in some country store off the Blueridge Parkway and they were playing it and had the DVD for sale and I bought it. I've been listening to this song for I'd guess 25 years.
One of the most beautiful tunes I've ever heard. Absolutely stunning. Thanks for posting.
we have a girl here in northern ireland called Rhoda Barfoot who is equally as talented
sandy baby Yes. She is a fine player.
Hi thanks for sharing this beautiful tune. You may like to know the correct spelling is Usan, Eleanor of Usan. Eleanor was the late wife of my grandfather and they lived in the fishing village of Usan near Montrose. I hope you will able to correct the spelling. Regards David.
Thankyou for the correction of the the name 'Eleanor of Usan' and making us aware of the story behind the tune. Eleanor must have been a beautiful lady to inspire such a beautiful tune.
Well, according to the Transatlantic Sessions 3 DVD it is actually spellt "Eleanor of Usen". ;-) I still spelt it wrong though.
@@Lucarius1 they have it wrong. If you look at Aly and Phils original CD, spring the summer long you will see it correctly as Usan. I know because I lived there too and I was with my grandfather when he commissioned Phil Cunningham to write it. Hope this helps.
@@pullarhorticulture7879 Ah! I don't have this CD, therefore I didn't know. Thanks for pointing it out. ;-)
What a beautiful tune David. Your grandfather must have loved it, it really is something special. My condolences on his passing. This tune will keep both their memories alive for many many years to come. Gary
And I saw , Aly Bain, With his fiddle in the group, His fiddle Sighs, Crys, It leads Napoleon's Retreat. Then there's the fiend for his dope, And a drunkard his whine, But who pity's the pore Miner, way down in the mine, Its as dark as the dungeon, Damp as the dew, Pity the pore Miner,, Way down in the mine, He has only one blessing, If he can walk out the portal at the end of each day. It's as dark as the dungeon, Lord, Damp as the dew, The dangers are many, And pleasures but few.

John Davis passed away about 4 moths ago. This was his opening and closing theme song for his long-running radio show Folk Music with John Davis and later Heartfelt Music The show ran on KPFK FM and once the internet was introduced the show had a worldwide following. So Long, John. RIP
I'm sorry to hear of John Davis's passing--Heartfelt Music was a must-listen show for me back when I lived in Southern California.
I love every song Guy Clark ever wrote or sang or hell, ever listened to. *Beautiful* ensemble. Jerry Damn Douglas. Damn.
I absolutely love this melody and rendition. Played along with my fiddle and then my whistle. Thank you for this lovely recording.
Saw him in Glasgow last night.............fabulous live act.......... was support act to Shelby Lynne and Allison Moorer........... enjoyed his part more than the main act............!!!
RIP to John Davis who opened his "Heartfelt Music" show with this great song. We'll all miss you John. You introduced us all to the wonderful world of folk and acoustic music for well-nigh 50 years.

I agree. I want to play it everyday. I am learning Irish Whistle and fiddle, and so thankful for this lovely melody.
