Celebrating 5 Years in the Woods with a walk, come join!
5 years was such a round number, had to make something. So feel free to tag along, while I tell some anecdotes from my 5 years (mostly) alone in the woods. While editing I could of course remember all the things I forgot to mention during the walk, but stories for another time!
Special thanks to all my subscribers for tolerating my random video topics, incoherent mumbling, mediocre editing, and irregular posting. You all rock!
There's been so many set-backs, the road, the flooding, the windfalls, the pump, the excavator, the ATV, etc.... Hopefully I've crawled my way on top of most of the things now(and ignored some others). And can soon prioritize more projects, out of interest, rather than necessity. Which should result in better videos, at least somewhat more interesting ones.

Took about 300h to become proficient enough for this one, which is the 6th iteration of my flute design. I'm not a luthier, and feel under-qualified to talk about flute construction. But it was an interesting exercise in experimental physics, though if I don't have to do another matrix multiplication ever again, that would be great! I more or less follow the same principles as you do. I'm a flûte-à-bec player (recorder: the true flute :)), and now I'm learning how to play the tuba. I've got a small vibroacoustics background and I'm (re)discovering the physics behind brass instruments greatly thanks to this book I warmly recommend: The Science of Brass Instruments (Murray Campbell, Joël Gilbert, Arnold Myers), Springer 2021. If you read it you'll learn how "the emission of light from a quantum well laser and the emission of sound from a trombone are governed by the same basic equation" i.e. Schrödinger equation or Webster horn equation (which I see is already written in the references you mention, but nevertheless, the book is a bit more accessible than the papers directly taken from the sciences publications, which of course is only a matter of viewpoint).

    This man's never heard of the invention called a drill. It's a thing that will spin wire for you 😂😉

    • @JKKnudsen
      @JKKnudsen หลายเดือนก่อน

      I would not recommend using a drill for this procedure. A lathe with wire feed is possible, but otherwise do by hand. As this yields far more uniform loops. And reduces the risk of snapping the rather brittle Kanthal wire(Same for Nichrome). A drill would however be fine for winding loops for say chainmail/jewelry using mild steel, silver, copper etc.

    • @3dp_edc
      @3dp_edc หลายเดือนก่อน

      @JKKnudsen but when you wind you wind with no spacing drills shine in that regard bro, look it up people make them like that and they turn out perfect I'd argue you get a more consistent result like that. Even a hand coiler. And it's not like it's some NASA grade coil if something is a few thousandths off it's not gunna be the end of the world

    • @JKKnudsen

      Usually yes, oddly enough this time it was the combination of a leaky return line right next to the air-intake, and the coolant hose popping of because some idiot(me), forgot to bleed the coolant line after filling. That's why this runaway actually stopped when I pulled the cable to the injector pump solenoid. I now know the correct procedure would have been to chock the intake with a rag!

    • @JKKnudsen

      Srrry, Late answer, been busy, and don't get notifications on some videos: But yes I've tested it with just the one side(didn't want to make both if it sucked). But it kind works, had to remove the middle bearing to make it run true-ish(some tapping on the jaws gets the wobble <1mm). I did have a go at rounding out the bottom of a jar. And when a good chunk was glowing hot, the edge of the jaws facing the jar got soft(this was mediated by foil tape, but next version will only have wood facing flames) Some other things to mention that will be addressed in mk2 include: -Even plywood warps a lot. Scaling the headstock down to something 3Dprintable and fillable with concreate would solve the issue of dimensional stability. -Threads on the spindle, so different chucks can be used -I left it running for 6 days, on day 4 it didn't sound right, and by day 5 it had a noticeable wobble. Sadly the balls was not the ones wearing away. And since I find it unacceptable to replace the sleeves that often, I'm currently in the preliminary experimentation, with 3d-printable air-bearings, and lapping tools. If that doesn't work, maybe babbittt bearings, but I feel that using my metal lathe to machine something, would make the glass lathe way less accessible for other makers. -Planetary Chucks are not suited for laser/3d-print fabrication. Softness of material yields unacceptable backlash in the gears. So it's back to the scroll chuck! I mostly do vacuum stuff(tubes:discharge, geiger, laser, etc) and repair/repurpose broken labware. Now I'm not any good, just barely good enough for a reliable Housekeeper seal, but for most of what I do that's enough.

    We don't get many actual mosquitoes here in Scotland, we've got midgies instead. They're arguably worse, although they're not known to spread disease the same as mozzies, the bite is instantly itchy and painful as they lack the anaesthetic protein sialorphin which gives mosquitoes time to feed and f**k off before you notice the bite! If you look for a "midgie net" specifically, they tend to be a finer mesh than a mosquito net and should be able to keep the buggers out!

    • @JKKnudsen
      @JKKnudsen ปีที่แล้ว

      We have both in Norway, and technically it's the midges that break me while outdoors. The mosquitos are mostly annoying after the fact, large swells and itching yourself bloody.

    The damage to the apple tree might actually encourage it to fruit. My dad had one that just wouldn't fruit for years until the power company hit it with a cherry picker. It split the tree down the middle to about a foot and a half short of the ground, it had a years healing and the following year it bore loads of apples (didn't weight them but there were enough to make 6 gallons of scrumpy). First off, amazing. Second off, I have no idea why, but when you were talking about "self centering chucks," I thought you meant you developed a way to automatically re-center your chucks. I was wondering for a good while, "What the hell kind of electronics did he stuff in there to pull that off?!" But now that I SEE the device, I obviously was waaaaay overthinking what you meant, haha. Very cool chuck, though! It still amazes me watching other craftsmen who are way more talented in other areas than myself and what they come up with.

    • @JKKnudsen
      @JKKnudsen ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Much apricated! Ahh, I realize the term is probably more common in a machining context. But typically you get 4-jaw chucks that are not self-centering, for eccentric(off-axis) turning. Now if I understand you correctly, the thing you describe, is actually a thing, called a power chuck. They are usually hydraulic of pneumatic, but is for high force clamping, and not really suited for glass work. Same same! So many talented folks on the internet!

      Yeah, I had a suspicion.. But the piece I tested on didn't gum up the first hour... But yes, silicon grease is probably the way to go. Teflon lubricant should also be good, depending on additives.

      @@JKKnudsen I agree, PTFE lube is my go-to because of the price of silicon grease.

    • @JKKnudsen

      Thanks! My guess: Channel is too random. Video quality is meh. The algorithm really wants you to be gimmicky/controversial. And I have a mumbling voice.

      @@JKKnudsen You've got a lot of interesting stuff going on, it's better to spend the time doing the cool stuff than getting too concerned with the presentation! As for the mumbling, I'm fluent in mumble so it doesn't worry me! 😁

      @@EddieTheH Thanks, much appreciated! Wish I had more time for projects, but trees keep falling over, and machinery breaks down. Hopefully I'll get the new wood-shop up and running over the summer. That will certainly steam-line things, cus now everything is a mess. Ahh, finally someone fluent in mumble!

    Since the first time i clicked this one. The algorithm thinks it's my new faveourite thing. And i keep clicking these Fly cutter videos. But i always imagine Mr. Miyagi with an angle grinder or knives or something. But allas! It never is.

      Haha! Grind off...grind off? But man, the algorithm can be pushy at times, certain words and phrases just seem to trigger it..

      Cheers! Not sure if it pays of though, unless you live far from the post-office. I got it down to 45min pr valve, but man it's freeing, to know you always have a valve "available".

    Not bad at least the actual work is shown actual lathe footage of machining common metal into a useful tool for the express purpose of removing the fuel injector stuck in the engine. My only question is diesel or gas? Probably diesel, common gas injectors are mostly plastic and not sturdy enough to be removed by a slide hammer.

    • @JKKnudsen
      @JKKnudsen ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! And yes it's diesel, yanmar 3 cylinder. Currently in the process of overhauling the injector pump. The return line broke open right next to the air intake and I got a runaway. Pump did not like that...
