Old Man, New Turntable
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 27 ก.ค. 2022
Old man Gen-Xer just starting to learn and play around with turntablism as a hobby. Having fun with portable and full-size turntables.
Practicing Phrasing and Vocal Cuts Like a Scientist
Practicing scratch phrasing using CULTRENGE's phrasing tutorial video here: th-cam.com/video/ooDrulp1p6E/w-d-xo.html. Will be working on speed and precision next time with this one.

Practicing tap breakdowns with the weak hand. Still weird to think of my otherwise dominant hand as the weak hand.
Short Autobahn - Practicing for Consistency and Exploring Potential Combos
มุมมอง 970หลายเดือนก่อน
The tail end of a long practice session (hence the hand cramps) focusing on short autobahn consistency. Also playing with a dynamic "Aaah" sample off the Beep Ahh Fresh 12" battle record.
Impeach the President Tap Breakdown into a Basic Beat Juggle
มุมมอง 1.6Kหลายเดือนก่อน
Practicing tap breakdowns and basic beat juggling over the Impeach the President drumbeat. Once I get comfortable with these mechanics, I'll start working on strobing then eventually looks at the other more complex patterns.
Practice: Swing Chirps at a Slower Tempo
มุมมอง 572หลายเดือนก่อน
I wasn't getting the sound I wanted out of my swing chirps so I chose a slower tempo and focused on the attacks on each note of the triplet. I think I'm close now, so just continuing to practice to build consistency and muscle memory.
Practice: 2 Tip 2 Click Flare Scratch Combination
มุมมอง 1.3K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
Practicing the 2-tip 2-click flare combination shown b D-Styles in the tutorial snippet: th-cam.com/video/0HBJuYt2Eys/w-d-xo.html. Trying to improve on getting the tips a more staccato, and stopping missing the first click of the flare.
First Mix: 80s/90s/2000s Quick Hip-Hop Mix
มุมมอง 4772 หลายเดือนก่อน
First time doing a mix since middle school cassettes. Some of the transitions could have been better, but it's a learning process.
Practice: Boomerang Scratches at a Slightly Higher Tempo
มุมมอง 1.3K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
Working through Boomerangs and related ideas at a slightly higher tempo. Again, the turntables did wobble, but did not fall down.

Just continuing to practice on the short autobahn; looking for better articulation, precision, and consistency.
Practice: Continuing practice with BoomFlares

Dope... Cuts
Hello.
Hello! Thanks for checking it out
nice homie!
Appreciate it!
That's very good Bro! Could you explain the process more slowly? Sounds brutal
Thanks! Actually D-Styles explains it here: th-cam.com/video/0HBJuYt2Eys/w-d-xo.html. I'm actually doing it incorrectly because I'm doing two 2-click flares instead of one.
@oldmannewturntable THX Bro!
Sounding clean man! Good work. Keep it up!
Thanks! Appreciate it
I have the same thing. Yet despite minor efforts I keep reverting back to the left because it "feels" nicer. And I hardly put in the time to improve the right.
Yeah, I have to make more time to work on the right. The skill gap between the left is way too big
You have two dope combo 0:48 1:06... Nice work
Thanks! Always looking to improve
Mindblowing! Wow
nice one! I'm wanting to make the switch to dominant on the record also
Thanks! I'm not sure if my goal is for a full switch to my dominant hand on the record, but I know I need to be a lot better with that hand for beat juggling.
Top very nice
Thanks!
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Chirp flare?
I threw a few 2c flares in there, but I don't think I had any chirp flares going. Thanks for checking out the vid!
Hey brother, though I'd drop a comment from the other side of the world in Australia! Another old man here getting back into scratching after 10 years off. Also trying to nail the autobahn, I've found using the twiddle technique on the xfader helped me gain a lot of speed and also helped me sync my record hand with fader movements. th-cam.com/video/SNsgBzOFAU4/w-d-xo.html Keep scratching brother!
Thanks for the tip! I saw the twiddle technique a while ago but honestly forgot about it. I'll give it a try once I get better w/ the record hand. Good luck with getting back into it!
As a fellow late 40s Gen-Xer who has started a late in life music hobby I love your channel. I recently started making beats and stumbled on your channel and subbed. Keep working and having fun.
Hey, thanks for that and thanks for the sub! I remember trying to make beats on a few borrowed keyboards back in the day, but scratching has always had a hold on me. Looking forward to hearing what you create! 🎧
Thank you brother!
Thanks for checking out the video!
Dope
👊👊👊
Damn man your're making good progress! Respect!
Thanks! 👊🏾
Cutz are getting cleaner! Keep it up man!
Thanks! Will do
Nice. Maybe try alternate babies with chirps for some variation bro. Gdluck.
When I get this specific technique down I'll look at adding some variations. Thanks!
RESPECT! ✊🏾
Sa sonne pas terrible tes boomerang
This is practice, so it is still a work in progress. Thanks for checking out the video
Sick!🔥
You made that look easy!
Thanks! Happy all the practice is starting to pay off
Nice! I’m still practicing myself RESPECT! ✊🏾
Thanks! Just caught your mix -- miles ahead of me! 🔥🔥🔥
@@oldmannewturntable Thanks brother, appreciate you
What do you think, Rane TTM 57 or Numark Scratch?
My last mixer was a Rane TTM 56. Its solid and I still have it. It was great for scratching, but I wanted to learn to mix also. Since I dont have many records anymore, I wanted something with Serato. The Numark Scratch was the best budget option. The options and overall sound of the Scratch make it better in my opinion.
@@oldmannewturntable thx
Hi. You emit good sounds here. Tell me how this Numark works? Isn't this crossfader too small? Regards.
Thanks! Its a very good mixer; I'm enjoying it so far. The crossfader is good -- it doesnt feel any smaller than any other crossfader.
For some reason I found the boomerang so hard to master. Still not quite there yet. Keep it up 👍🏾
Yep, it will definitely require a lot more practice for me to get decent at it.
Ciao la traccia per lo scratch dove la posso trovare ???
Practice makes perfect!🔥💯🔥
Yep! Thanks Juse
Keep practicing 😊
Smooth! Keep going 🔥
Thanks, will do!
How old are you? I’m 62 doing the same
49. Hopefully I'll be able to continue into my sixties
@@oldmannewturntableI’m 50 and just got back into scratching after a 25 year break.
Nice! I'm enjoying it
Ive just started up at 55!!
Respect 👊
Dope clean cutz man! Keep it up!
Thanks! Will do!
How is the Scratch treating you?
I'm liking it so far, but the fader has more dead space than I'm used to and is very difficult to reconfigure. I'll probably take the Innofader Pro2 out of my Rane and try to drop it in the Scratch. If there are no issues, then I'm good to go.
th-cam.com/video/xPZKxDTqVJE/w-d-xo.html this video is pretty good on explaining on how to adjust the cut in time.. the problem with the inno fader pro 2 is the size.. it can be tricky to get it in most mixers.. i hope this vid helps you in your journey with that mixer..
@@GraceByFaith-86 @GraceByFaith-86 Thanks for the link, but that was the exact video I used as a guide while trying to reconfigure. Nothing changed at all after about an hour of retries. You're right about the Pro2 being difficult to get into a mixer... getting it into the Rane 56 was an ordeal. Luckily Innofader has a mounting bracket that should help this time. Thanks for looking out though!
@@oldmannewturntable yes sir, I know I was sweating trying to figure it out for hours hahah.. I eventually gave up and emailed the man himself Elliot Marx the owner and he helped me out through email.. don't hesitate to email inno fader.. the owner will get back to you...
Love the post it notes! Nice work and new subscriber. 🔥
Are those Cempasúchil flowers behind?
Its actually an artificial bonsai tree w/ made with moss. I was looking for something like marigolds but couldnt find a good artificial option.
dope brotha! im just learning all this myself, not easy at all! dope cuts and damn you have a gorgeous set of tables!
Thanks! Yeah its a lot of practice and developing muscle memory, but I'm enjoying it
nice cuts man
Appreciate it!
Nice choice with the steady B
😱😱💀💀🤖🤖🤖
Nice bro!
Thanks! I'm enjoying the practice
@@oldmannewturntable 💪
I'm 41 and I miss it.....
I'm having a blast... never too old to jump back in if you can
Oh look a legit dj without beat match and mp3's....cheers my man! Only the ol schools respect the wax.
Appreciate it... I love wax, but it can be hella expensive nowadays. I can understand why people go the mp3 route, especially with the dj tech being so good now. I'll be trying out some of it myself soon. Thanks for watching!

Dope stuff, stay on a grind🫡🫡
Thanks! Definitely will
Super awesome dude - would you ever show us your board of post-its and all the moves you've collected so far? I'd be really curious about how you interpret them as diagrams.
Thats skratch notation. The up/down wave lines represent forward/ backward movements of the hand on the turntable. The little hash marks are the fader cutting the sound in/out.
Good work! The see-saws are the cuts from :10-:30 secs? I like those. I'm curious what are you using to mark your records?
The see-saws are spinkled in here and there, but from 0:33 - 0:37 are see-saws. TTM has a great tutorial vid here: th-cam.com/video/6ZHYnUdPw3g/w-d-xo.html. The labels are just standard Avery easy peels labels; they can be applied/removed easily.
Crispy Kutz!
salute... this how it happens!
Yep... thanks!

I think you sound good as heck. Look out Mix Master Mike!!!!!!!!!
Ha! MM Mike is a million miles above me, but thanks!
