    Thanks ordered mine at temu now. Was torn between this one or a bushbox. But 15 cm vs 12.5 means 45 percent more chamber volume and heat in our winter.

      Based on what I found with mine, some folks have mentioned not to overfill as it'll lead to warping. How much was it on temu?

    Also - can you confirm if the Fire Maple stove would fit in this set up in place of the BRS?

    Love this. Very much up my alley! Was wondering if the Toaks 115mm Frying Pan could work as a nice of large lid / cap. I get it would probably make the whole thing less uniformly slender but it could work I think and you’d have a very well fitted lid plus it would be a 3 pot/pan set up.

  • @mmtot
    @mmtot 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I suspect it warped as it was too hot from over fueling. I think it's best to put smaller pieces in and not much higher than the feed hole. Then just continue to feed the fire gradually to maintain it. The way it is at 16:45 is probably the most amount of flame you want. At 23:10 that is overkill. Also I would recommend not moving it at all until it's cooled down. It's probably far more likely to warp or bend if you start moving it when it's really hot.

    • @BorealWilderness
      @BorealWilderness 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks for the suggestions. It definitely warped during burning as it checked for warping each time before shifting it. Just wanted to see what it's capable of. Normal use will definitely be more subdued 👍

    this is actually about glued only vs pinned handle, without glue I woould use both, glued, including bolster, and then pin the rat tail

    • @BorealWilderness
      @BorealWilderness หลายเดือนก่อน

      This is not a katana where the blade is held in with a pin - mekugi. Neither is it a western style knife (yes, there are others too) which has a bolster to separate the blade from the handle. This is a traditional asian tool, built in the way it is, for reasons explained in the vid. In its form, it has served the people of our region for generations. You could build a modified version in any which way you like. But that would deviate from the traditional design and function. We choose to use our blades as they have been made by our forefathers as they are proven (with the small addition of a pin sometimes for the city folk 😅).

    weather proof sheath, elegant for custom craft project, but too complicated

    • @BorealWilderness
      @BorealWilderness หลายเดือนก่อน

      One could also just take a piece of PVC pipe, heat it, press it and be done. Would probably take 10 minutes and 2 bucks of material. This one is complicated coz I wanted it to be, for the fun of it :) Definitely would not be practical to be commercialized, if that's your angle, as folks probably would not be willing to pay for the time that went into it. Or maybe not, as a crazy amount of work goes into those hand carved sheaths with the braided rattan etc. and people still do buy em 🤔

    Nooo!!!! Do not take apart!!! You will not get a good seal on your orings and you will get bypass. That's why we weld it shut. The air test to check for damage fibers does not work due to our proprietary technology which prevents air locking. Adding glue only defeats the anti-airlock mechanism and is unsafe. All of the above voids your warranty. Just goes to show you cannot believe everything on the internet. John T. Smith Vice President R&D Sawyer Products Inc.

    • @BorealWilderness
      @BorealWilderness 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The mini is glued as far as I can tell. No chance opening it. BUT...It still can be tested. Just that you'll see bubbles coming out of the spout rather than directly from the membrane pack. The same can be done for the PointOne if you dont want to take it apart.

    • @JiminiTrek
      @JiminiTrek 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@BorealWilderness At some amount of air moving effort, air will definitely move through the filter, even if it is perfectly sound. Do you understand how we might quantify that? Is it something like: the filter is failed IF 1. If you see bubbles at pressure < Xpsi VS 2. If you apply pressure Xpsi and see bubbles in < X seconds. I presume that this all depends on the tendency of the hydrophilic pore of a given diameter to try to resist a force that is trying to de-wet it? This would make me lean towards the first condition? I admit its not my field of expertise but I definitely would like to understand this better. I think the community would be grateful for a DIY test that can be performed with < $20 of personal effort!

      I used an oven. Found that it's too hard to get a large enough tub of water boiling for large sheets. And heat guns are too concentrated to get a whole piece soft uniformly. Over a fire is prone to be singed.

    Would this method still work without taking anything apart? I cannot separate mine either but it does run clear for a few seconds before starting to bubble. I’m watching the top of the black nozzle for bubbling as I’d imagine all bubbles would still have to come through the top. The filter can only hold a small amount of water I imagine, so it would have to start bubbling at some point since it isn’t being supplied with water anymore. Right?

    • @BorealWilderness
      @BorealWilderness 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yup, you are doing it right. Sounds like your filter is compromised. The the field that's what I'd do. At home, to be 100% sure, I'd submerge the filter facing upwards in a bucket, push water through it with a bottle or bag full of water to displace all the air, keep the filter under water, unscrew the bottle or bag, empty it, send it back down upside down to keep it full of air, screw it into the filter, then try and push air through it. If you are getting a steady stream of bubble coming through the filter, most likely it's compromised. Wouldn't do this in a stream or lake as the clean end would get contaminated.

      Certain profiles require localized deformation. The prices can't be softened in a oven...not without compression forms and whathaveyou. For a once-off, that's not practical. If done in a well ventilated area, its ok for the one off here n there. Hold my breath. Then step away and breathe. Yup, ofcourse, best to replace. It's just that CA glues are relatively non-toxic once cured but they are not considered food-safe by the FDA. So while the CA glue method would work in a pinch, an eventual replacement would be best in the long run.

    Well, thanks for the advice! I have a SP184 Sawyer 4L system that's been running slower every year. It is at least 10 years old however I probably filter no more than 20 gallons per year. I go to the Boundry Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in northern Minnesota each year. I also pre-filter my water by running it through a coffee filter (there is always something floating in lake and river water)! Followed your directions and it has vastly improved after the first soak in white distilled vinegar. Thanks for saving me $150!

      Glad to hear the vid was helpful. Keep at it a few times more and you'll be golden! I hope more people come across it and do the same for their filters. I see too too many folks saying their filter is "slow", then diss Sawyer n then chuck it and go out and buy a new one - usually something with poorer filtration specs just so they can get "much better flow". And they justify throwing away their clogged filter with...."Its just XX dollars for a new one. What do you value more? XX dollars or your health?", which quite frankly is not even a valid argument.

    I'll bet the savings was focused around cost of manufacture. the more curves and direction changes you put into a metal stamping the greater the chance that there could be a defect. Also. just from watching you use the lid in this video it seems like the old style lid doesn't seam to seat in the cup very well and looks like it wants to jump out? Could just be my misinterpretation but maybe the newer design is a little more stable. As an aside I know that ultra-light backpacking is a "game of inches" or a "game of grams" and every little savings adds up cumulatively but is a 4g savings even noticeable holding them in your hands?

    • @BorealWilderness
      @BorealWilderness 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thing is, they still produce both. So it's not like they are switching over to a simpler production process and discontinuing the old complicated one. The original rolled design is a little easier to flip up as it sits more 'inside' the mug (with the edge of the cover lining up with the outer edge of theuh) where as the new pressed design site 'on top' of the mug's rim (with some overlap past the rim edge). So the original design is easier to flip up...if that makes sense. But it's not an issue either way. And no, the couple of grams difference is definitely not something I'd advise anyone to switch lids one way or the other for. Just use what you have or what you like.

      @@BorealWilderness I feel you have been a great help to many who are looking at buying this fire pit/grill. Your video is perfect, natural, raw and very honest review. I prefer your video over the pumped up creators you mentioned because you go through every little detail, right down to the welding points, bag stitching... the whole lot. Some of the pumped up creators focus too much on the video than the product. As a side note, the camping grill arrived 5 days earlier than specified on the delivery note. Although I have opened up and assembled the fire pit, I have not had a chance to use it as yet. Having said that, the fire pit/grill looks and feels solid and so far exceeds my expectations. I will have to wait till fire season is over (Australia has some strict rules) and I also need to source some fruit tree wood from our orchard so I can grill some meat (apparently fruit tree wood is desirable). Can't wait to put this little unit to the test. I'm sure it will handle quite well. And for the money ($129 AUD - on Amazon Sale Promo) I feel it is a very good deal in comparison to some other brands (Snow Peak) which from photos looks like slightly thicker gauge steel but also retails at $595 AUD and I think that is without the fire grate. Also their actual cooking grill is made from steel which has been chromed, reviews mention it often rusts and very hard to clean due to it's square patern. ps your velcro being short is something I experienced on my end too, the same thing. Also good to know that the bag has an actual slot for the cast iron grate, I actually didn't notice that until rewatching your video just now. :)

    I never grab a hot pot bare hand, most of the time. For my part I've better balance and grip with round handle on titanium pot, while I grab the handle I push harder on my thumb a little bit aside across the handle so its almost impossible to slip off from the handle, of course when I don't have my glove on.. I even find out that on the one you showed here, the square one with the pinky finger stopper helper shape, it's get in my way so I've much more less control over it. I've both kind of pot handle, at the end of the day it doesn't matter very much. :-) Thanks for the demonstration, I was looking for the 550 ml pot.

    Steel warps, cast iron, not so much.

      Indeed. And it's also probably cheaper to make than welding some plate n bars together. They could have made something that slotted/clipped into the triangle walls which would achieve the same outcome for a lot less weight. The cast iron works well, no doubt tho.

      I could. But that'd be mighty big. Not something I would carry. Largest personal pot I take out is my 900ml :)
