No Kickflips, Strictly Shuvs. Reef Orlando
Reef Orlando for XO Flowers Summer ‘24 publication.
Vert skating often doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. While street skating has dominated for decades, the art of vert ramp skating has never been lost-just overlooked to some extent. As a publisher, I felt it was important to shine a spotlight on a vert skater in particular for the very first issue of XO Flowers.
Reef Orlando is unique in that he’s not an all-terrain skater. He openly admits he doesn’t skate street or bowls, which makes his chapter in the book even more special.
This video showcases live-action photography set to music, capturing the moments as they unfolded in real-time for Reef’s 20+ page feature in the publication.
Please enjoy!

30 Years of Girl and Chocolate Skateboards
มุมมอง 1.3Kหลายเดือนก่อน
I started shooting the Girl team in 1993, right as the company was taking shape. It was a truly special time in skateboarding-a period of transformation. Street skating was evolving, and the style was moving away from the old Mongo-pushing days. Legends were being made at lightning speed, and I was lucky enough to be right there in the mix with a camera in hand. This video spans from 1993 to 20...

When I noticed the video I wondered if the boards were weird enough to include one that I saw when I was in grade school,...I'm 68, and I was attending Pine Elementary in Redding California. The school would have activities like bicycle contests with races etc. One time it was skateboards and one kid had a board similar to the one you have with springs. It was red and seemed really hard for the kid to ride, I thought I remembered more springs, as if independent suspension,...seemed too complicated, too high and wrong all together. My memory might have embellished more springs, memories do that, but at least I don't have to wonder if I could ever prove that I saw one. Geez,..metal wheels, and something resembling clay or brick wheels,...terrible, I had wooden wheels on skates that I had for the rink,...they were fine,...any way thanks, I can check that mystery off of my list. The oddball stuff is fun,...but 8 wheels??? I want to see somebody ride it, ha.

My first board was a wierd board.. it was wood, very thick wood and it was quite narrow for a 1978-79 board.. I did buy some aftermarket urethane wider wheels for it. The biggest trick I learned to do was ollie up and down curbs.. I was in the 10th grade at that time.

I had a board in the mid 80s called a Fish Stick but it wasn't like the Fish Sticks sold now. It had the reputation of being unbreakable.I cant find anything On line about it. Anybody ? I started skating during the Dog Town days in Orange county and Downey California. gave it up during the Bones Brigade years when I joined the Marine Corps but my son picked up the slack.

man i'm so glad skateboards turned out the way they did. imagine if they never evolved towards performance, but remained something casual & leisurely. skateboarding wouldn't even be a thing today, we wouldn't even be here, this video wouldn't even exist. some alternate timeline where the most a skateboard ever became was maybe something like a plastic wal-mart penny board every 7 year old would have and plays with once; ubiquitously thought of as a child's toy, the "skateboard" . a single flat wide shaped plank of finished & polished wood that rides upon some strangely adapted yoke & suspension system; a fun novelty & exercise, the "skateboard". it could have gone down so many paths. no popsicles, no concave, no kicktails. trucks that weren't built to grind, un-optimized geometry. wheels too large, too small, too wide that could have ended up being made of rubber instead of urethane. griptape could have been a completely foreign idea we never saw. ludicrous wheelbases, proportions, mounting patterns, asymmetries & balance issues, etc. no ollies, no airs, no slides, no grinds, none of that. and somehow, out of all the people using them, it was the collective that decided to do rad things with them that won out and here we are today.

Nice to know that I’m not the only one who knows what skateboards taste like. I wish I still had my first Nash board. Got it as a birthday present when I was about 3 or 4, back in the mid eighties. It wasn’t high quality, but it was definitely better than the Wal Mart boards today. One of the older neighborhood kids got on it and did an ollie, and it blew my mind. It was on from there.
