Wow, this was a really interesting review, have you ever thought about focusing on records that don't fit neatly in the jazz world?
the most influential flattop acoustic guitarist of the last century... great review. thank you.
I also picked this one up. Had to go to several different stores before I finally found it. Sounds absolutely incredible!
Incredible album, and most definitely a collection of jazz compositions. This album, amongst others around this time period (late 70s, early 80s) were jazz by any definition of the word. He still released bluegrass every couple years but he was heavy into composing jazz at this time. And in my opinion, this is some of the greatest "acoustic" jazz ever recorded. For some of Tony's deep cut jazz from this time period, check out his work on albums of his band mates - Todd Phillips, Mike Marshall, Richard Greene, Darol Angor. They too released incredible jazz albums and had Tony play the guitar parts.
I'm definitely on the hunt for those now!
Amazing album!
Another nice job, Chris! Have you heard The Pizza Tapes, that Rice made with Jerry Garcia and David Grisman? Really good music and some funny banter.
No, but thanks for the tip. I'll start looking for it. Thanks!
Great review Chris. I will definitely pick this up from Acoustic Sounds. Love that interplay with Coltrane in the opener.😊
Have a Japanese reissue from the 70's. Love it
I love Japanese pressings!
Another nice job, Chris! Fun fact: Coltrane released My Favorite Things in 1961. The Julie Andrews movie was released four years later, in 1965. The Broadway musical, The Sound of Music, was from 1959.
Ahh, very nice. Thanks for the info!
Great band! I saw them when they were young 'uns back in the '90s, and then again when this album was released. Unfortunately, Mehldau was sick and couldn't make it, but they got Gerald Cleaver to pinch-hit, and he was great. Keep going, Chris...these are fun and informative!
Thanks Chuck. It was fun to do something recent, and I love this album. I could listen to Blade and Mehldau all day.
I only recently started getting into jazz, so when I streamed OTL a few months ago I really wasn’t ready for it. I know it’s just a matter of time as my palate develops. Right now discovering Mingus and some early electric jazz. Fantastic stuff!
Totally understandable. Listening to Dolphy and Ornette can be like visiting another planet. I like to alternate different styles of jazz and classical, the contrasts are very enjoyable. I am on the hunt for a clean copy of Mingus Ah Um, hard to find. Thanks for listening!
I recently got into Maiden Voyage so I reckon this will be the next Herbie album I pick up
Yeah, this one is especially sweet with Dexter Gordon. Enjoy!
One of the many great musical memories I have is seeing the VSOP Quintet in 1977, playing Maiden Voyage (which was already one of my favorite songs).
Wow, I would have loved to see Tony Williams and Ron Carter play that live. I saw them separately but not together.
Thanks for making this. Kind of Blue was the first jazz record in my collection. I’m not a musician so I wasn’t sure what was meant by modal harmony. This was a great explanation.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Very informative Chris. Just picked up the Rhino stereo rerelease and it sounds great. The harmonies in “Spiral” remind me a lot of “Crisis” from Art Blakey’s Mosaic album, which came out about a year later. Do you agree?
Yeah, they are similar with the descending lines in the melody. Spiral has a shorter descending melody over a bass pedal tone, where Crisis has the descending line harmonized melody over a bass ostinato. Nice catch, I'm sure Freddie Hubbard was massively influenced by Coltrane's album, everybody had to deal with it. Thanks for the comment and listening to Jazz!
Henderson’s Page One is on Scott Yanow’s list of 17 essential hard bop recordings (as is Moanin’ which you featured previously). Deservedly so.
I'm mostly going through the albums I currently own, trying to hit the major ones. Thanks!
Like the video 👍🏻

Thanks I like this disc very much

Interesting video
Very!
Great video. I think this album’s legendary impact is partly down to an unfortunate but useful problem with Paul Gonsalves microphone during his epic solo. Although it means the solo clarity is limited on the mono you are much more aware of the audience going increasingly crazy in waves of excitement . In contrast the reconstructed Phil Schaap version for CD which incorporated the VOA microphone content gives a much clearer solo but I feel at the expense of the atmosphere of the gig responsible for Ellington’s rebirth. So the CD Newport is fun and complete but without the original version listeners may wonder what all the fuss is about!
I had also read that not all of the band members were present on stage at the beginning of the show. Sounds like a wild show day!
if the remastered LPs sound great, does that mean the CDs are even better?
It would sound different. The vinyl will usually sound a bit warmer. Also, I'm not sure they are producing CDs anymore, maybe SACD's. But if you can find the CD, I've been getting them used for like .50 cents, not bad. Good luck!
Great video! I recently picked up the BlueNote Classic Vinyl reissue at my local B&M and it sounds fantastic!
I like the classic vinyl series a lot, it's very difficult to find originals that are clean for under $100. And they also sound great due to Kevin Gray's work. I need to compare to the Tone Poet releases, haven't done that yet.
Great video, and Congrats on launching the channel. @RickBeato described this album as the best recording he’s ever heard. Stunning, sonic perfection.
It really is a perfect album. A big room, great mics and next-level musicians, all the ingredients for greatness! I watch @RickBeato as well, love his channel. Thanks for subscribing, new video tonight!
Thank you Christopher for the terminology lesson. Please keep ‘em coming! I’m new to jazz and for reasons I can’t explain, I can’t stop listening to bop. Perhaps your channel will help me understand why.
Great! I will definitely be going into more detail on the sub-genres of bop. Thanks for subscribing.
Ok, I’m subscribing to this. Really good initiative
Thank you!
Jo Jones had played with Basie, not Duke. Gonzalves played his noted solo into the wrong mic, that's why they had to re=record.
Thanks for the correction about Jo Jones! Yeah, I had read about that microphone issue. Thanks!
Great commentary on of one of the great Jazz recordings.
Thank you so much, I really love this recording.
I normally dont care about an LP's pressing but that japan sleeve is rad! Anyways thanks for the video, look forward to watching more!
The Japanese OBI strips are always fun. Thanks for watching!
Blakely was from Pittsburgh.
Wow, thanks for this. I thought he was a Philly guy for years, should have checked.
Super informative! I enjoyed hearing your thoughts and intentions, it's refreshing to think about music in these ways.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Nice job, Chris!
Thanks Chuck, I'll check out your collection for sure. I generally use Discogs, maybe this is better!
